Minister Of Labour And Employment Chris Ngige Reportedly Says Medical Doctors Are Free To Leave Nigeria...

Is this for real?

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has said that he is not bothered about medical doctors leaving Nigeria, to practice outside the country.

Ngige who was a guest on Channels TV Sunrise Daily, said the practice is not alien to Nigeria, because he was taught by Indians in secondary school.

“I’m Not Worried, We Have Surplus (Doctors), if we have a surplus, we export. I was taught Biology and Chemistry by Indian teachers in my secondary school days.

“They are surplus in their country. We have a surplus in the medical profession in our country. I can tell you this. It is my area, we have excess. We have enough, more than enough, quote me,” he said.

Ngige, when asked if nothing was wrong, owing to his position as a qualified medical doctor, said there was nothing wrong in their choice to practise overseas, at the detriment of Nigeria’s health sector.

“There is nothing wrong, they go out to sharpen their skills, earn money and send them back home here. Yes, we have foreign exchange earnings from them, not from oil.

“Those guys go there, they are better trained because of the facilities they have there. Eventually, I know a couple of them who practise abroad but set up medical centres back home. They have CAT scan, MRI scan which even the government hospitals cannot maintain. So, I don’t see any loss.

“Brain drain will only be inimical when for instance neurosurgeons travel and we don’t have neurosurgeons here,” Ngige added.

    4. I had to visit a government hospital last year and the experience was not palatable at all. The ratio of patients to doctors is out of this world. The patients were a mammoth crowd while the doctors were few hence the long hours spent before a doctor could consult with you. The doctors here are not enough. This is just an irresponsible statement made by the minister. Doctors are leaving because of the poor condition of work, same way many professionals are also leaving.i just pray our leaders will see the light and do the needful to salvage the pathetic condition of this country.

  7. TBH, Nigerian doctors in Nigeria are the most unprofessional arrogant individuals i have come across, closely followed by the Nurses......the number attribute you should have as one in the medical field is Empathy - You MUST have it, it cannot be taught or acquired and unfortunately a significant proportion lack this - its evident in their behaviour to their patients and families of patients across board.

Then what about upskilling or keeping your skills upto date? They lack that - you find doctor's who graduated 10 years ago and have done NOTHING to update their skills or knowledge - in the abroad, every year we appraise doctors on their knowledge/training/skills and if you have an unsatisfactorily appraisal - you will face a performance review

Naija doctors only have voice when it has to do with pay but otherwise nothing else!! I personally feel alot of them studied Medicine because its their parents dreams, financial gains or because of the prestige attached to the profession (*coughs*coughs*to my ex legal colleagues*) not because they actually care about the vulnerable and those with ill health.

I agree with Ngige but not in his choice of words or manner of delivery - i believe there should be a systematic cleanse of the Medical system in Nigeria - Universities should stop accepting new intakes to study medicine for a 6 year period ---->>retrain the existing ones on empathy, update their skills ----->>> introduce a monitoring and reporting tool/system where patients and their families can give feedback on their experiences of both Doctor/hospital etc

    2. You are honestly very slow! The same doctors you are insulting are the ones breaking grounds abroad and doing excellently well. How will they even give their 100% in Nigeria when they are not being paid well and they have terrible facilities and equipment to work with. Keep saying trash, very soon it's only small doctor and dr. sid that will be left to treat you people in Nigeria. Be there defending Ngige that if anything happens, he has flown himself and his family abroad for treatment. Nigerians, most of you honestly deserve these useless leaders!

    3. Your opinion though. But bia sylvia In your bid to malign Nigerian doctors you just yarned opposite.. lack of empathy or not are you saying the number of doctors in Nigeria are enough?
Btw..empathy gets taught..you learn to show empathy and secondly you need help to even understand ngige...he wasnt talking about any cleansing..
Why am I even bothered you clearly need help in comprehension.

And madam that your input of stopping intake for a 6year period shows ya level of intelligence...that will bury the health sector that's already on the bare floor 6 feet and it will take decades to rectify...any way maybe some of us will come back to naija then and bill you lots as expatriates trust me to show you a lot of empathy and of course not sympathy when you pay your last hard earned dime for basic health. It will be a win win situation.

    4. Empathy gets taught from year 1, we study ethics, communication skills, psychology, behavioral science, etc. Doctors are empathic but when they are boke or haven't had 7 hours of sleep its hard to display emotions. People like you are just selfish, you are the reason the government has refused to look into the pleas in the health sector.

    5. If you don't know what to say just pass by who told you that we don't update our kniwknowldo you know the process of our license renewal that you need to attend seminar and conferences...don't come here and talk what you don't know that doctors do not update their knowledge

    6. Ngige that you agree with is a medical doctor. From this his arrogant statement it is clear that he doesn't even know what is going on in the health sector. This government is filled with officials that suffer from foot and mouth disease. They always spew thrash including the President.Mschew

    7. Sylvia what did you just write? I’m a doctor and I left Nigeria 13 years ago. I work in the UK as a consultant. The difference in work environment is too stark. Before I left Lagos, I completed my housemanship in Luth. Half the time no electricity. I remember using candles to insert IV lines in A and E. Rechargeable lamps in modular theatre nko? What about the state of the wards? Rats the size of rabbits roamed freely at night. I can’t say it all here. I knew if I didn’t leave, my practice would be deficient, as I would not have the right tools or infrastructure to progress in my career. The medical system in Nigeria is in shambles.
People ask me why don’t I go back? I want to. But to operate in theatres without basic tools and watch patients suffer and die needlessly? I wouldn’t be able to cope with the mental health implications of practicing in an environment where I’m practically helpless. Many of us studied medicine because we really care. That’s why doctors in government hospitals in Nigeria will contribute money from their meagre salaries to help out poverty stricken patients who can’t afford to buy drugs. I know this because I can’t count the number of patients I gave money to.

Don’t come here and spew what you don’t know please.

  8. We may have "surplus" but who is employing them? Are many of them not jobless as you people have refused to create job opportunities.?

See the way he's speaking so proudly as if he's the one who paid their fees in med school.

  11. This man is a dropout in the medical profession. Mediocre doctors who joined the political train to steal.
You can tell from his pedestrian views that he needs medical evaluation.
These are the kind of people making policies? Nigeria needs deliverance.

  12. This man speaks like a big fool. It's a wonder how our rulers speak lies with such impunity because they know nobody will caution them. Which surplus medical doctors do you have in Nigeria?????? What is the ratio of doctors to patients in Nigeria? Someone up there is saying how Nigerian doctors are the worst, it is because they are overworked, patients are too much, no equipment, not even gloves, not paper, not syringe. You have to run around for even the most basic things in a Nigerian hospital. If it is you, tell me how you will be able to be at your best and offer your best service when you have to attend to upwards of 40 patients daily.
This rot in the medical system that your nonsense government has refused to fix, it's a pity that it's the poor masses that will continue to suffer it. Well done ngige, just well done.

  13. He doesn't know what he's saying. Why can't we have those facilities here? Smh for the selfish people ruling us.

  14. In theory, he is wrong.
The global recommendation is 1 doctor to 600 citizens. Based on the latest WHO report I could find (2013), Nigeria is at ~ 1: 2600.
Yes, the government should be concerned that doctors are leaving. Most of our key health indicators ( infant and maternal mortality, life expectancy, mortality rates for conditions well managed in other countries) are terrible.

Brain-drain within medicine is not unique to Nigeria or third world countries really. I attend medical school in Europe. I've noticed that a handful of the Eastern European doctors migrate to our side. While here they move to Australia/ US/ Canada. The difference here is that the government acknowledges the problem, they dialogue with the relevant groups and they take steps to make it more attractive to stay.

As with most things in this current Nigerian government, they will refuse to acknowledge the problem.

International organisation: Corruption in Nigeria is at this level.
Nigerian government: It's a lie. We have never seen it better.

The Nigerian economy is not growing as expected and unemployment is a big issue.
Nigerian Government: We have increased our foreign reserves. We have created 8 million jobs.

Frankly, I don't understand how you can fix a problem, when you refuse to recognise it.

  15. This man is just stupid. Where is the research paper/work he did to prove that we have a surplus of doctors. Mr Ngige, we need doctors to not only practice medicine in hospitals but to also conduct research and come up with new treatments and preventative measures. Its so sad that Nigeria has myopic-thinking leaders who think medicine is only limited to the four walls of a hospital.
Even in the so called hospitals there is still a shortage of doctors. If only they knew the amount of profit that can be harnessed from the healthcare sector.

  16. Why did Ngige or his children not embrace vocational studies? How can an educated 'leader' vomit this kind of shit from his mouth? How did Nigeria get to this point, how? A whole GIANT of Africa is now 'former.'

  17. What is wrong with all these public office holders? The other time it was Prof Adewole, Minister of health, talking about doctors who cannot get jobs should go into farming and even the suit he's wearing was made by a medical doctor. When you are recovering from that one, Lai Mohammed will come with his own .What's wrong with these people?
