The State Police Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Bala Elkana, said in a statement that the suspect committed the murder at about 3am on June 20.
“On June 20, 2019 at about 3am, Surulere Police Station received a distress call from No. 4 Ogunlana Drive, Surulere that one Joseph Ogbu; 22, who was employed as a domestic staff on June 18, 2019, murdered his employer, Oreoluwa John; 38 and her 89 year old mother, Adejoke John.
“The suspect confessed to the crime. In his statement, he averred that, his employer asked him to clean the house at about 9pm of June 19 but an argument ensued between them, which prompted him to stab her with a knife.
“The shock of her death made her aged mother to slump and die....
After they died, he moved some valuable properties such as electronics, handsets and household items into the employer’s Toyota Camry Salon Car and attempted to escape but he was apprehended by policemen on patrol at Ogunlana point.
“The vehicle and items stolen were recovered. The crime scene was sealed off and corpses of the two victims were taken to Mainland Hospital Yaba for autopsy.
“The Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu MNI has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba to take over the investigation and charge the suspect to court,” he said.

Young single women, please stop employing young men as house helps. Even if he is a family member, please stop! Get an agency, the help can come only on weekends and go. Live in an estate to avoid gateman or in a flat with people.Stop playing with your lives, your mother and you could manage through the week. This is the second death by a young gateman. These days, things are hard and people are evil, protect yourself. Cooking, cleaning and taking care of yourself is not going to kill you.

DeleteMy dad is 77 and we have all moved on by virtue of marriage or relocation. He didn't remarry after my mother's death so we have been employing people off and on. At that age, they can't be all by themselves.
The last one we employed is a young lady in her 20s and she has been very good so sometimes, one has got no choice.
The hiring process is what one should look into, registered agencies etc.That doesn't even guarantee safety with what is going on in this evil world now.
This one is an armed robber, he didn't come to work.
DeleteI don't believe in employing male house-help honestly, especially for two women living alone. When my gradma became really old, we hired a woman that specifically looks after old ppl, like an iya nurse in her 40s, she cooks, cleans, gives her her drugs etc. They seat together, gist together and have their little quarrels.
if she notices any change in her health she knows to call us and a neighbourhood doctor. They may cost more, but worth it.
Times are really hard,just avoid employing males for now and proper background checks for the females.
We shd all start considering HOMES like d oyibo do, that way dey with there fellow aged elders❤️

Pls b informed dat d mother did not slump as stated by d police, he actually strangled d mum afta asking her to transfer money to diff accounts provided by him. This boy stabbed my fiend afta she transferred her money to him, den ask her mum to do same den strangled her to death. He then pour petrol on them but couldnt get matches to lit dem up. He even tore d pillows to see if they hid money in dem. D police are trying to play funny on this issue. He was abt taking d car & d valuables he took from d aos bfr he was caught. Dis devilish boy killed our fiend from same pry sch to sec sch. I av not been d same since yday. It is well

ReplyDeleteThat's why Nigerian govt, NGOs need to look into organized senior citizens health & social care. It doesn't have to be govt funded. But at least monitored by the state government, vetting caregivers, vetting (police criminal record health checks) & persons previously detained under mental health acts, etc for home care agencies, govt issuing issuing bonds for caregivers & people working with vulnerable people like drivers etc.

Nigeria & Nigerians r the only people who I know that will depend on crowdfunding for their own burials, even when they r capable of putting money aside & making sure of finances for their funerals. Yet they'll die & their friends or family members will start begging, running up & down soliciting for money. How can u be sewing asoebi, wearning bling & dancing at parties, and yet u put no money aside for ur funeral whichever/ however way u want it?

ReplyDeleteThis happened in my neighbourhood, the househelp was caught trying to drive out when he hit the car against the gate (obviusly couldnt drive well or maybe due to panick mode )the noise alerted the next compound night guard. When he (househelp) was being questioned, he claimed that mama sent him on an errand which the guards doubted because according to them once mama enters the house, she doesnt come out/drive out again until next day (mind you most of mama's kids I learnt live outside the country). it was in the course of the argument that the Police patroling Ogunlana drive came by and also asked what the matter was, the guard & the househelp said their parts but can you believe that the Police were actually asking the guard to let the houseboy be since he works there , thank God that the Guard stood his ground and insisted they see Mama before he can allow the househelp, na there 'kasala burst', househelp jam gate close started running, guard pursued him, Police on realising what was playing out shot at the jammed gate and entered only to meet these two corpse(mama & her daughter)in the pool of their blood. While there is speculation going on that the 38 year old daughter was even expecting (pregnant), the confession from the househelp is that it is the Person(s) through whom he was hired that told him to quickly execute the JOB!
