Emefiele Says CBN Will Soon Stop Milk Importation

Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele on Tuesday declared the bank’s intention to add milk to forex restriction list sooner than expected.

The announcement came on a day that Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the apex bank unanimously voted to retain all the base rates at their levels for the third time since March 2019.

Emefiele had said in January that CBN may increase items on forex restriction list to 50, saying it will get more aggressive in ensuring that more items being imported were added.

Answering questions shortly after reading the communique of the 125th MPC meeting, the Governor said big milk-producing companies in Nigeria had been importing for more than 60 years and it was time for them to engage in backward integration.

“There are obviously two schemes. Either the West Africa Milk or the milk importers acquire land and begin to grace their own cows and fatten them and get the milk, and then they can also be complemented by pastoralists who own their own small holder’s cows under a small farming holder arrangement, they can also get milk from them.

“Indeed, they could also support the pastoralists, get them concentrated in one place instead of moving around. Buy them facility like water, hospitals, schools.

If you are in a community and you want to enjoy the proceeds of that community, there is nothing wrong in providing certain to those communities to blossom, provided the grass even if you sell the grass to them.

“The proceeds of what you get in return will be your milk to recoup your investments. Those are the kind of things we expect companies that are importing milk into Nigeria to do..

But that you will continue to import milk into the country, I think we are getting to the end of the road. I will repeat, we are really getting to end of the road. The era of importation is coming to an end, and it will come soon and sooner than expected.

According to him, CBN would be willing to provide loans to investors in the dairy value chain in acquiring land, growing, or even producing water.

  1. Is Nigeria now Switzerland? How many cows do we have? How many can they fatten. Do we even have proper machines to pasteurize these milk efficiently and in commercial batches. They don't even have good crude oil refineries, na milk?

See us see food poisoning ohh.

    2. The CBN guy said soon, it will come to an end. That means certain things will be put in place first. He mentioned giving loans to investors in the diary value chain. No need to criticize.

I think this is another way to go around the Ruga palava. Companies investing in milk production can buy lands and put several herdsmen there to nurture their cows and get milk. It will curb roaming of cows and education for the herders. At least, it's reassuring that you are selling your land to either 3 Crown or Peak milk. No Fulanistation sentiment.

    3. They want to cause malnutrition in Nigeria. Why? To promote the roving herdsmen? They are not happy that the common man can now afford milk in sachets. They want kwashiorkor to come back.
Indeed with every move he shows he is the president of the herders only.

    9. Teejay... No need for arguments. I only reiterated what the CBN said and the idea behind it, I think, is to find another way to solve farmer VS herder Palava.

If 3 crown, peak and Jago bought hectares of land, then register several hundreds of herdsmen and their cows within the land to nurture the cows for milk production. Tell me, would that not solve the herder farmer clashes? Would it not create jobs? Would it not help the GDP? Emefiele mentioned building schools and hospitals, would that not serve the host communities? After all, na Jago milk or peak go buy land, what's the Fulanisation scare for?

Now tell me another policy you think is better.

      I'm waiting oo...

  3. Nigerians should protest oh. This president and his cohorts are still bent on enforcing RUGA by hook or crook. I don't know why these people always feel entitled. See their mouth like provide hospitals and schools to the pastoralists simply because they are cow owners.

Na wa oo. This is RUGA in disguise. These herdsmen that sleeps with their cows. They want to give us poisoned milk.

This bubu Jubril is too desperate. This fulanisation seems to be his ultimate agenda. He cares solely for his fellow herdsmen and their agenda and well being. Can you imagine, using English and milk production to disguise Ruga. Re we not in trouble like this?😳🀷‍♀️.

Why wld he want the whole nation to be dependent on herdsmen for milk production. This is dangerous. He wants to stop every avenue for importation of milk and make us dependent on herdsmen. Nigeria is in trouble.
