ReplyDeleteAccording to Buchi,
"An uneducated person has little chance of happiness. He cannot enjoy reading, he cannot understand any complicated music, he does not know what to do with himself if he has no job. How many times have I heard my friends say, ' I want to leave my boring job because I want to write, because I want to catch up with goings on in the theatre, because I want to travel and because I want to be with my family. '
The uneducated man has no such choices. Once he has lost his boring job, he feels he's lost his life. That is unfair".
"Writers simply have to write, and not worry so much about what people think, because public opinion is such a difficult horse to ride".
I'm off to Amazon. I need to read her books.
DeleteShe was a very STRONG and BEAUTIFUL WOMAN, while raising five children as a single parent by the age of 22, in London after being abandoned by her husband, she worked to put through university.
ReplyDeleteTo all single mums out there, you are doing an amazing job, keep pushing.
Just because you are a single mother doesn’t mean you cannot be a successful. YOU CAN DO IT!!πͺπͺ
I respect all the single parents out there doing it soloπ
Buchi Emecheta inspired me to no end. I happened to read about her life in a Genevive Magazine interview, about 10/11 years ago. I was going through so much at that time and was just embarking on a life as a single mum of 3, all under the age of 6. I moved to Europe, achieving 2 Masters Degrees and told myself, if Buchi Emecheta could do it, then I can do it too! God has been good to me. I thank God for everything. To Him be the glory! A happy 75th posthumous birthday, Buchi Emecheta. You've left a good legacy!

DeleteHappy 75th posthumous birthday MA?! Oh!how I love your books π. Continue to rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteHer books r all time classic. I read 2nd class citizen almost 20 years & it stuck to my memory. 1 of those feminist, inspirational strong resource full of knowledge for a woman to understand her situation & to learn to fight her battles full head on with the terrible darkness of patriacy in our African culture & something that still follows to abroad anywhere we go as an underprivileged immigrant black woman. Really the book made sense for me to all the things that affected me as a poor, broke & unfotunate single mother.
