Catholic Priests Protest Murder Of Rev. Father Who Was Reportedly Killed By Herdsmen

ABOUT 200 Catholic priests serving in the Diocese of Enugu on Friday staged a protest over the killing of their colleague, Rev. Fr. Paul Offu......

Offu was killed by yet to be identified gunmen, suspected to be armed herdsmen, while travelling on Ihe-Agbudu road in Awgu Local Government Area of the state in the evening of Thursday, Aug. 1.

The Catholic priests, who marched peacefully through major roads within Enugu metropolis on their white official cassock, displayed placards with various inscriptions such as: “Enough is Enough’’, “Catholic Priests are Targets of Hoodlums’’, “We Cannot be Living in Fear’’, “Government Must Address Security Challenge in Enugu’’ and “We Are Not Happy with Government’’.

Addressing newsmen on the development, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga said that the protest was to register the displeasure of the diocese at the incessant attacks on Catholic priests by hoodlums in the state which has lasted for seven years now.

Onaga said that the Catholic priests were simply demanding for more security in the state, adding that “if there are crop of bad herdsmen in the state they should be fished out and we will continue to live in peace with the good ones’’.

The bishop, however, noted that the attack had become unbearable as the diocese lost a priest in March who was killed by suspected armed herdsmen.

He said that two weeks ago, another priest was shot in the state and “he is still receiving intensive medical attention as we speak’’.

    2. Teejay
Is 'Acting' the name of an animal or human being? Or you wanted to say 'he cries than Atiku?'
This your grammar is getting more complicated o. Pls come and tell us what you mean?

  2. How did we get to this point in the first place? I hope my own amiable, fiery, outspoken, prophetical and dynamic Fr. Ejike Mbaka was among them in that protest? He should see for himself what has become of the man he campaigned for, his incompetency and lackadaisical approach to issues on security.

    3. @Nne nwa, thanks for the information. I am happy he was among them. As a Catholic, I won't condone even my own parish priest when he goes wrong. They are humans and are bound to err at certain point in time.

    1. Yes they are responsible for it, but trust the Nigerians police to exonerate them. I got a very liable information from my people over there. Eye witness account to it says it all. Our people now live in fear not because they can't challenge this blood suckers but the protection they often receive from the police and military, makes it difficult for us.

    2. Teejay, you always reason thru your back opening and speak with minimal deep thinking! Everything is caused by herdsmen. So all the criminals in the southern part of Nigeria have repented and now Pastors, right? I am from the South South and live in Benin city (and shuttle between here and Onitsha, Nnewi, Aba, PH, Warri and Calabar for business). I know most of the crimes in the south south and south east are perpetrated by unemployed youths and undergraduates who are cultists and want to either steal/kidnap to make money and sustain their high lifestyles or carry out reprisal killings of rival gang members. Pls, I am not saying there are no criminals from up north claiming to be herdsmen but let us be circumspect and not be too emotional with our thoughts. There are far more indigenous criminal elements amongst us than the so called fulani herdsmen.

  5. Blame herdsmen for everything....... Brothers are killing brothers and getting away with it cos, 'Herdsmen' are now the only acceptable criminals in the land. Una go dey ok......

    1. You say that because you are in a safe zone at the moment. Don't worry I won't wish any of these herdsmen menace comes to you or your love ones but time and happenings will always vindicate us. You think when this marauders strike, people don't see them as to know who they are. Its okay.

    2. @Kikki how many of your brothers have killed your brothers or priests and consistently shoot at priests and attack your own village.
      Think before you type!

    3. Kikki, Even those in the presidential villa understand where the problem is coming from so what are you saying? You think support means pretending the problem doesn’t exist or covering up the administration’s incompetence with such pedestrian logic? The best thing you can do for your country in general and your party in particular is to accept your failings and find the way out else posterity will judge you harshly for it and it will be too late then.
PDP is still paying for the years they had the chance of making a difference yet wasted it. Do you think this government will get away with theirs? Once a Nigerian is benefiting from something, there’s that tendency of blindly supporting regardless of what’s right or wrong.

    4. Anon 12.35pm, you are just being emotional and not rational. Kikki is being reasonable. I ask again: have all the criminal elements in the south south, south west and south east repented and turned away from their bad ways? Or have relocated out of Nigeria? Let's be rational in our thinking - the police cannot cover up all the crime by herdsmen.

    5. Hear yourself, "The police cannot cover up all the crimes by herdsmen". Ask yourself now, have they ever indicted them for once? What about the Nimbo killings in Enugu? did the police indict them? what of Agatu in Benue? or is it the death of the Afenifere 58years old daughter killed few weeks ago with the driver as an eye witness? Or do people don't know Fulani herdsmen again if they see one?

May the soul of fr.Offu and the souls of all the faithful departed...through the mercy of God rest in peace.

  7. Whats going on in Nigeria? Burahi said he will make this country ungovernable if he is not made president, now he is president yet things are getting worse. What more does this man want from Nigerians?? Y is this happening? Nigeria has never had this kind of insecurity problems. Not even in Abacha's regime. *crying for my country*

    1. Tenth, please read to comprehend!

"... the protest was to register the displeasure of the diocese at the *incessant attacks on Catholic priests* by hoodlums in the state which has lasted for *seven years now*.
Other priests have been killed or wounded before now.
So, do you want them to go on the streets everyday protesting?!
Men of the cloth first sue for peace through dialogue and negotiations. Where all peaceful strategies fail, they will do what is needful.

    2. Buhari address these herdsmen incessant killings now! Your silence when other tribes are murdered in their own villages and ancestral homes speaks volumes.
Nigeria was far better off in security and economic leverage before you came to power in 2015.
Anarchy looms on the horizon where insecurity is unchecked.

    3. Tenth have you personally embarked on or participated in any protest against the insecurity in the country abi e no concern you?
