Etiquette You Should Learn

Don’t call someone more than twice continuously. If they don’t pick up your call, presume they have something important to attend to;

2. Return money that you have borrowed even before the other person remembers asking for it from you. It shows your integrity and character. Same goes with umbrellas, pens and lunch boxes;

3. Never order the expensive dish on the menu when someone is giving you a lunch/dinner. If possible ask them to order their choice of food for you;

4. Don’t ask awkward questions like ‘Oh so you aren’t married yet?’ Or ‘Don’t you have kids’ or ‘Why didn’t you buy a house?’ Or why don't you buy a car? For God’s sake it isn’t your problem;

5. Always open the door for the person coming behind you. It doesn’t matter if it is a guy or a girl, senior or junior. You don’t grow small by treating someone well in public;

6. If you take a taxi with a friend and he/she pays now, try paying next time;

7. Respect different shades of opinions. Remember what's 6 to you will appear 9 to someone facing you. Besides, second opinion is good for an alternative;

8. Never interrupt people talking. Allow them to pour it out. As they say, hear them all and filter them all;

9. If you tease someone, and they don’t seem to enjoy it, stop it and never do it again. It encourages one to do more and it shows how appreciative you're;

10. Say “thank you” when someone is helping you.

11. Praise publicly. Criticize privately;

12. There’s almost never a reason to comment on someone’s weight. Just say, “You look fantastic.” If they want to talk about losing weight, they will;

13. When someone shows you a photo on their phone, don’t swipe left or right. You never know what’s next;

14. If a colleague tells you they have a doctors' appointment, don’t ask what it’s for, just say "I hope you’re okay". Don’t put them in the uncomfortable position of having to tell you their personal illness. If they want you to know, they'll do so without your inquisitiveness;

15. Treat the cleaner with the same respect as the CEO. Nobody is impressed at how rude you can treat someone below you but people will notice if you treat them with respect;

16. If a person is speaking directly to you, staring at your phone is rude;

17. Never give advice until you’re asked;

18. When meeting someone after a long time, unless they want to talk about it, don’t ask them their job, age and salary;

19. Mind your business unless anything involves you directly - just stay out of it;

20. Remove your sunglasses if you are talking to anyone in the street. It is a sign of respect. Moreso, eye contact is as important as your speech;

21. Never talk about your riches in the midst of the poor. Similarly, don't talk about your children in the midst of the barren...or talk about your spouses around those who don't have.

22. Lastly, Share a post you learnt from to help others learn too. Your share can be the one that makes it go viral...

  1. Why is asking are you married a bad idea?
    And dating a married man/woman is still bad. How will one know if a lady is available to be. Married?

    1. Context is important
      Asking for asking sake is not good but ask if you want to date

  2. Lol @ some of these rules. Who makes up these things sef? They forgot to add don't talk about your job, business, house or university admission in front of those that don't have (yet). RME.

  3. Etiquette should be taught compulsorily in schools, so many people i know lack simple manners. its rare to find a well behaved person in life,even judging from the comments in this blog,most of them lack good upbringing.

  5. Hmmmmmmm As a matter of fact I observe all this. Am as perfect as what you just wrote but unfortunately am not all that wealthy to complement my good deeds.

  6. When making a call to someone, I don't like calling once and stop so the person won't think I was flashing and I don't call more than 2 times so the person won't feel i'm disturbing.

    Pen at the bank, I love to go with mine so I don't have to borrow from anyone and whenever I lend my pen, I ensure i don't forget to collect it back.

    Lending money, I've learned not to borrow more than what I can't let go should there be stories at the time to pay back.

    1. How? After passing through a door, just leave it open for the next person

    2. What if it closes? You know some doors you have to hold them to keep them opened otherwise if you leave it, it closes itself. So this means you have to hold it for the next person....I can't always do that though I try most times.

    3. 16:46, if there is no one behind you, by all means let the door go. It just says be considerate to leave it open when you go through, instead of shutting it in the face of the person behind you.

      I’d say I practice 95% of this, and learning on some especially interrupting people when they speak. It is a process though.

      Thank you for these tips. Good for check and balancing 😁

  8. No 1...if I'm calling my subordinate during office hours you better pick your call or call me back,it simple office etiquette. Nothing irks me than calling someone over work issues especially if they have dropped the ball and they don't pick.
    No 2... I've learnt never ever to borrow someone money I can't be able to let go. If I borrow you money and you start kurukere moves over it, I'll let it go but that's the end. The friendship will just be on hello and hi basis and God help you if you ever have the audacity to come and ask me for anything again.

    I've also realized that most people don't know when they overstep conversational boundaries. If I don't discuss anything with you, don't ask me anything about it and if you do, a polite smile and a sarcastic reply awaits you since you can't mind your tongue.
    I've also learnt not to give my phone to people. I have a picture to show you? I hold the phone myself and swipe for you or send it via WhatsApp to you. If not before you know what, they've left your gallery and have dived into your WhatsApp, IG and what music app.

  9. You forgot to add. Stop dishing out unsolicited advice to pregnant women. If I need to advice I will ask my Mum or my doctor. Some women with people with plenty children behaving as if they know it all.

  10. Am guilty of 17, sometimes I advice not because I really want to intrude but cos I want to help but I just learnt... My lips are 🤐 here on now. But let me ask @no 20,why do people wear sun shades during talk show on TV. Some of our key govt personnel n celebs do it a lot and I assume they are lying n that is why the don't make eye contact with the interviewer n camera as well

  11. Nice one...Now I know I don't expect too much from people. It's all basic etiquette.

  13. No 21. My sis is so find of doing it to my sisters,one is looking TTC,while the other one is still married. The husband doesn't have name again,it's always my husband this,my husband that,my children this,my children that. As much as it's not her fault I often tell her to be considerate while she talks around them. I see the pain in their eyes.

  14. No. 1 annoys the hell out of me sometimes but, other times I get a feeling that the person calling might have something important to discuss or an important message to deliver.

    When it comes to food and drink, it depends on my mood... Sometimes, I ask the other person first and other times, I don't bother asking. I always ask the other person first, when it comes to drinks.

    I do not see anything wrong in asking someone if they are married or if they are a parent.
    Caucasians ask these questions all the time...

  15. I don't expect anyone to pay for my food and you will starve to death if you expect me to pay for yours.

  19. no 1 just happened to me this morning. A number called repeatedly while at a prayer meeting this morning and I had to send a text that i could not talk and the caller should please identify themselves as I had no name to the number. e come be my cousin wey don dey owe me 400k for the past 2 years..i vex no be small but i kept my cool even when she called me back. Infact am only taking it easy with her because she is a first cousin and her grandmum is my dads only surviving sister. now i dont loan money to family members except what i can let go.. i observe most of these etiquette rules cos i can mind my business for africa anyways. I went to a catholic all girls school run by white sisters so they really thought us alot about comporting yourself and all. sorry maybe am old school too but a lot of people these days just have no manners and social ettiquette..

    1, Please stop longing your neck to see what others are doing on their phones, or what they are reading in a newspaper etc.
    2, Manspreading, men be mindful of how wide you open your legs while sitting in public spaces, especially when there is someone right next to you.
    I know you guys give excuses on the basis of the size of your third leg,to me the problem is with your rough packing habit, so learn how to pack correctly.
    3, I hate this for the life of me, stop smacking when you eat, some even do it while you are talking to them on the phone, bubble gum smacking gives me migraine.
    4, ladies please and please,l am not kidding on this one, stop forcing your Bumbum to shake when you walk, we can tell when you do this fake shaking.

  24. Please when you want to sneeze, cough or yawn. Do it in your elbow not your palms. Please don't spread the germs.
    Nigerians should learn to do their toilet business in a bank toilet or fast food restaurant toilet. I hate seeing people's private parts everywhere. It is disgusting.

  25. When receiving a call and you are using your hands free, notify the caller on the other end so he or she will be mindful of what to say.

  26. Dont eat infront of a hungry person.

  27. @no 6, There was a day a friend of mine suggested we go see another friend of ours who was ill. On the set day,we took like 3 bus going and 3 bus coming. I felt she was going to pay while coming back since av been paying going. On our way back while in the bus,we were chatting and shortly after the conductor shouted "owo da" only for my friend to pretend like she was on a call, I got pissed and she did that through out the journey. Right there, I made up my mind never to go out with her.

    So I told our other friend who was ill about what happened, only for her to tell me she has done same to her. Infact I gave up on her. I dislike such people jeez

  28. My man needs to read rule no. 1, he is so guilty of it n it pisses me off. He won’t stop calling my phone till my battery wear out. He doesn’t care if I am in a meeting or not. So freaking annoying.

  29. No 16 and 17 are what I must work on. I am so guilty, them being part of Me is an understatement.

    Thank you Stella for sharing. You see why I can't go a day without visiting your blog, infact you have indirectly mode by life with some of your contents that my neighbour keeps wondering on how I behaviour and talk.
