Ten Retirees Of Nigerian University Die Waiting For Pension

At least, 10 retirees of the Anambra State owned Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) have died while waiting for payment of their pension.

The Chairman, National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and leader of Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions (JAC), Comrade A.C. Okeke stated this while addressing members of Anambra State House of Assembly, during a protest by the groups.

The groups had given the university’s management up to Wednesday, August 14 to meet their demands of non payment of arrears of salaries and pension to its retirees or face indefinite industrial action by the staff.

The workers who are members of National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and under the Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions (JAC) had marched to the state Assembly for a protest.

The groups claimed that the university was owing them over N4.6 billion.

    1. I pray retribution on anyone that will make the aged cry and kill them off by duping them of their hard earned life earnings. This wickedness should not go unpunished.

  2. Rest in peace to the death, these things happens every where, how about retired civil servants?, someone worked for 35yrs, retired and for close to 10yrs now, his gratuity has not been paid, I'm using this opportunity to call out the governor of Akwa Ibom state, we know he is trying but he should please do something about the plight of the retirees that their gratuity has not been paid, some of them have died,

  3. Pension in Nigeria is a scam! They will make you believe you'll easily assess the money upon retirement but that's never the case. Cheating workers of their labour and sweat.
May their souls find eternal rest

  4. That's why I am enjoying my life now as a global citizen of Canada & European country. As a middle aged woman, shining & flexing, bubbling in the good life, unlimited in health & wellness and aging gracefully. All thanks to the choices I made and decision now for me to do away with any such thing Nigerian and Nigeria!!!
Totally the opposite for many people my age in Nigeria, where either they are now broke widows, stagnant, married but very unhappy and sad. Dependent on family members, and government that is both unreliable, cruel or just plain evil to the needs of their aging citizen population.
How can someone work, toil for over 35 years and in the end die in penury??? Or be afflicted by such bad outcomes in life, with no money, no support available for them to enjoy the years leading up to their final stages of their life, especially the golden years??? when being at peace with oneself, having good resources, stability, living in dignity is all that matters!
