Army Chief, Buratai Tells The Media And Public To Stop Giving Boko Haram Publicity...

The Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, on Friday, came short of asking Nigerians and the media to stop discussing or reporting Boko Haram.

He said terrorists were being giving “undue publicity” which has further boosted the image of the sect.

Col Sagir Musa, Acting Director Army Public Relations, in a statement, disclosed that Buratai made the remark in Maiduguri during a visit to troops in the North East.

Buratai said that it was wrong for any person to eulogize or support murderers, bandits and armed robbers that the known Boko Haram terrorists group had turned into.

The statement quoted the Army Chief as saying that it is also important to note that the mode of operation of Boko Haram, ISWAP, JAS and others “is pure criminality for personal gains”.

“It is common knowledge that the criminals no longer pretend to be championing any cause other than quest for materialism as manifested in murder and terror on hapless people,” he said.

He pleaded that as peace loving people, Nigerians should not be glorifying these criminals by calling them by any name other than “criminals, rapists, kidnappers, armed robbers and murderers.”

“Unfortunately, many Nigerians are not aware that giving prominence to the criminal activities of the terrorists group through sensational headlines and fake news in both electronic and print media could also amount to tacit support to terrorism which violates the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011.

“It is therefore important that all Nigerians to rally round our gallant troops as they fight these criminals.

“All should know that the support to the efforts of the Armed Forces Of Nigeria in the counter terrorism efforts would boost their morale and it will be highly appreciated.

“The Nigerian Army is asking for the continued understanding and cooperation of all Nigerians and well meaning people”, Buratai said.

This is the same reason i stopped blogging about Boko haram activities ooooooh

  1. Even though there's some sort of sense in what he's saying, does it mean media shouldn't report terrorist attack? Should the press all go silent or not report the insurgent attack? Even America and other Asian countries report theirs. The Army should be ashamed of themselves for being complicit in the fight against Boko Haram. Do they think we don't know they are feeding fat on it? What happened to the billions budgeted for arms and all that? Didn't we see the story of Wadume the kidnapper having a military connection?

Truth is that, the Army have suffered heavy hit these few days and they are trying to coerce the press not to report it. Why should we not report it? People killed are they chicken? If we don't report it, how then will the government live up to its expectation in tackling it. The Army should get their priority right and be patriotic in their fight against the insurgent.

  2. what he says is the truth...when nobody talks about them, they die off. the more you report their impact the more clout they gain. the more funds and support they get from their mother groups. go silence on them and their motivation wanes. it's simple logic.

  3. Yes, Nigerian medias give Boko Haram so much coverage, much more than they give Nigerian Army.
They hardly report on the success of the military, but quick to cover their mistakes.

    1. I hope the success u are referring to is not that the military has wiped out or burnt down one empty Boko Haram camp or the other or that it has seized the group's abandoned equipment somewhere. How do u pitch that against Boko Haram brazenly making its way into military bases and killing military personnel? Let the military quit skirting around the issue or living in denial and tackle the issues working against their fight against the insurgents, which include corruption and sabotage. Until they make up their minds to get rid of those issues and re-strategize, all these things they're talking and doing are just time wasting.
