Customs Boss Says Imported Frozen Chicken Contains Chemicals Used In Preserving Corpses.

Hameed Ali, the Comptroller General, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Tuesday said imported frozen food contains chemicals harmful to Nigerians.

Ali said this during the ongoing Operation Border Drill on Wednesday in Maigatari local government area of Jigawa while addressing officers and men from NCS, Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

He added that the operation was as important as the fight against Boko Haram.

He said: “ongoing Operation Border Drill is important as the fight against Boko Haram.

“This is because contraband foods such as frozen chickens and rice are harmful to our health.
Let me tell you if you don’t know, the frozen chickens and turkeys imported contain chemicals that are harmful to our health.
For instance, these frozen products contain chemicals used in preserving dead bodies, that’s what is used on these contraband frozen food to keep them fresh for your consumption.

“So also the imported rice, as it spent the minimum of five years in stores and you are happy to say I bought Thailand or Indian rice.
What they usually do is bring them to Cotonou to re-bag and give it new date.
This rice is harmful because it causes different types of cancer and kidney disease.”

  2. Nigeria that used to have food, fresh foods, fresh veggies. now we chose to import nonsense and eat. People will prefer to buy vegetables from ShopRite than to buy from a poor farmer. Sigh. God, the thought of this news is scary 😱

    1. FYI... A lot of local farmers supply veggies to shoprite and Spar outlets. Visit Ikorodu and Epe; you will see a lot of farmers in plants and animals. So... Your assertion is incorrect; buying vegetables from Shoprite means you are buying from the local farmers - they are not "poor". The only time these retail shops won't work with farmers is when they (the farmers) do not meet their minimum weekly supply. There is a whole value chain of local suppliers to Shoprite outlets. It is a sad pity that some very silly Nigerians went to thrash Shoprite. It is the local farmers and Nigerian suppliers that are the biggest hit.

    2. well said 08:47. a lot of young farmers have partnered with these large scale retail shops to deliver fresh farm produce to them. I know of the guy that supplies tomatoes and pepper to Hubmart V.I, steady.

  5. Lies. Formaldehyde solution (formalin) is what is used in preserving corpses and it stings the eyes and the smell is very strong (every medical student knows that because of the practicals with cadavers). Frozen chicken doesn't smell anything close to that, maybe they use other chemicals but definitely not formalin.

  9. If the food seized, they should burn it all in public view not just confiscate it. Because I don't put it past them to lie and use the chicken to stock their wives' cold store and keep rice at homee.
