Pope Franics Announces Retirement Of Cardinal Onaiyekan

Pope Francis on Saturday officially announced the retirement of His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan as the Archbishop of Abuja Dioceses.

The info was passed through a telephone interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), by Mr Josef Ishu, department of Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja.

According to the letter from Rome, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama as the new Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja.

Ishu, however, noted that the date for the installation of the new Archbishop would be communicated in due time.

  2. He is still a cardinal; he will remain a prince of the church but he is no longer the Archbishop of Abuja. He has handed that over to the former auxiliary bishop, Amselem.

No he can't marry. He will die a priest and a price of the church.

  3. No Stella, retirement doesn't mean he will leave the Church and go live a normal life by getting married or having concubines.

It means, he will go leave in a home that has been built and designed for archbishops and bishops emeritus... More like old priest home.

He can still celebrate mass quietly but, not like before and attend some functions, but he can no longer preside over bishops meetings. Serving bishops will no longer report to him.

He will now decide to serve God quietly.

  5. Congratulations to him! To answer your question Stella. As a retired Archbishop, he is now an Archbishop Emeritus. He is not leaving the church nor getting married (except he chooses). He will continue to serve God and the church in his capacity as a cardinal and an Archbishop Emeritus.

  8. This man has lived a great life. I have a picture I took with him in August 2019 as I got confirmed in the holy spirit and just got my baptismal card back today signed by Cardinal Emeritus. Sir, thank you for your service of love. I pray God prolongs your life so we can invite you to celebrate with us and also celebrate you. You sir, you deserve a place at the Vatican.

  9. Can somebody show where the post of Archbishop was mentioned in the bible. I have seen that of a Bishop.

    1. Can you tell us where Pastor is mentioned in the bible. Cos this question is just to start unnecessary argument that will lead nowhere.

    2. The same place they showed the post of pastor. Arch bishop is literally a fancy way of saying “high priest”
People use the bible to mock catholics and forget the bible was complied and translated by Catholic bishops

    4. ArchBishop is the head of an archdiocese. It's just like we have local, state and federal government with each having a head but reporting to the same central authority.
An archdiocese is made up of a group of dioceses'. For instance, we have Umuahia, Aba, Ahiara, Okigwe,Orlu and Owerri dioceses. All these dioceses are headed by a bishop with Owerri as the head, that is why Owerri is the arch diocese and the afore mentioned dioceses are within it.
Left to me, I will say it's for administrative sake, it doesn't mean the other bishops are beneath the archbishop, they are all equal. It's just like having governor's forum in the South East with Enugu being the seat of power, doesn't mean that the Enugu state governor is superior to his Abia or Imo counterparts.
