Operation Amotekun -Your View Needed!

On Thursday, January 9, 2020, Governors of Nigeria’s six southwest states of Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo and Lagos, launched the western Nigeria security network called ‘Operation Amotekun’ in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

What do you think about Operation Omotekun?Do you think it will work out as planned?

Here are 7 key things you need to know about the sub-regional Operation Amotekun:

1..Amotekun is the Yoruba word for Leopard.

The logo of this operation features the image of a prancing, angry leopard in full flight; with ‘Zero tolerance to crime’ as the pay-off line.

2..Amotekun seeks to complement the police and other state security outfits in the southwest and not replace them.

3..The southwest governors cite rising insecurity in the region, kidnappings and robbery as major reasons for the birth of Amotekun.

4...Amotekun has received the blessings of the federal government and the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu, the governors say.

5..Amotekun personnel will be locally sourced--more like your neighborhood police.

6..Each of the the six southwest states has procured 20 trucks and 100 units of motorcycles for operation Amotekun.

7..Amotekun won’t be modelled after the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) security outfit.

Amotekun personnel will sport uniforms and won’t rely heavily on charms and machetes on the job.

“They will be professional and courteous on the job and penetrate areas your regular police officers can’t penetrate because we trust that they know the terrain better,” one aide of a southwest governor tells

  1. I Stan....i just pray they keep it up and not get compromised in the future.

    1. I stan too!

    2. Its a good initiative. More jobs for the youths and funded by the states like everyone is saying, jope the stay on track and not deviate from the original intention.

    3. Grassroot job creation especially!!

    4. Good move, they are people selected from each localities. They understand their areas even more than the police that can be transferred from any part of the country but the governors must make sure they are well paid, well monitored so that they won't compromise like our police in Nigeria and they must make sure they are not not political tools and not become thugs like opc.

  2. Good idea. The level of insecurity is quite alarming. If nothing is done soon it may completely get out of hand. The Police are obviously overwhelmed. In the East Bakassi was used to restore sanity (to some extent) when criminality got out of hand. I support Amotekun 100%

  3. This is a more glorified version of the Vigilante that has long existed in many areas. My take is that it will still present with the similarities of the vigilante as per effectiveness and drawbacks. Some vigilantes have been very useful in certain areas but in some they have also perpetrated crime.

  4. Oluwa.. wetin dey occur like this..

  5. Hmmmm,Amotekun will work out well if the Nigerian factor does not compromise it.Any kind of security outlet is needed in this country at this time. But I pray it doesn't quickly metamorphose into bakassi in the SW

  6. The only challenge is that like all things we do here, soon it will be infiltrated by bad eggs.its purpose will be forgotten and it may likely lead to an uprising.

  7. There's nothing u will create in Nigeria that won't be abused. I bet its the agberos in those localities that will be given the job so 🤷‍♀️

  8. It is more like a vigilante group from the narration. Every town has one where I come from and they are good. But the bad ones among them are the real thieves

  9. The problem with Amotekun is the fierce looking Leopard in the logo.
If was a cuddling "Amotesheep" in the logo, they would have welcomed it.
Plus or minus Amotekun has come to stay.

  10. This is a great one. They’ll be assisting the police and other security agencies to ensure it’s people’s safety.
We all know the police are not doing their jobs properly 🤷🏿‍♀️
As long they are on course and stay away from corruption like the police, it’s good.

  11. Why can't the finance, equip and overhaul their state police like "Amorika" pattern.
    NYPD, Lagos police force, LPF
Like most Nigerian projects it might likely fail and those arms would not be recovered.
Any armed robber caught then will be like "I was a former Amoteku staff until they stopped paying us and I took to crime".
    Just saying

  12. I support 100%. The Nigerian government has failed us in terms of providing security. Let every states in the SW,SE and SS protect their people.

  13. Sure, they would abuse it as usual, we now be hearing #endamotekun

  14. It’s a step in the right direction, but should not be the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal should be a decentralization of the police. That will make it more difficult for the center to wield the police as a force to be deployed against its political enemies. It will also make for easier monitoring as the hierarchy will be reduced.

  15. I support it 100 percent. Without the formation of Amotekun, the fulanis and kidnappers activities will increase.

  16. It is a welcome development that is long overdue.

  17. I see danger ahead, the outfit ought to be individual states and not code named western nigeria.

  18. I support it, I hope it works cos most of these security operatives we have in Nigeria are armed robbers in disguise....police, OPC, VGN....they are all the same thing.

  19. The Attorney General has declared Amotekun illegal, stating that it's establishment should go through legislation. Amotekun means Chetah by the way.

  20. I hope they will be trained, I hope they won't gather touts and wear them uniform...I hope it doesn't become something else....e go be😎
