WHO Lists Nigeria Among High Risk Africans To Be On Coronavirus Alert

The World Health Organisation has identified Nigeria among 13 high-risk African countries for coronavirus.

The other countries on the list include Algeria, Angola, Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

A statement from WHO on Friday said the identified African nations have direct links or a high volume of travel to China.

As of 30 January 2020, there were 7818 confirmed cases globally, with the vast majority in China, WHO stated.

Africa recorded its first case of coronavirus on Friday in Botswana.

To prevent the spread in Africa, WHO recommends that people should practice good hand and respiratory hygiene and safe food practices. These include washing hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub, covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing, avoiding close contact with anyone with flu-like symptoms, cooking food, especially meat, thoroughly and avoiding direct unprotected contact with live animals.

  4. Maybe it is based on countries with very high populations or those with a high Chinese presence. The world is too open these days, we need to go back to the days where everybody stay in their damn place and deal with their own shit at home. All this constant global travel is just making the spread of diseases and immoral ideals too easy.

    3. Nobody is in other ppl's countries more than the Chinese. Perhaps next to them are the Indians, these are the two groups that are everywhere. Nigerians are not anywhere high on the immigration list in comparison to those two nations.

@anon 9:29, yes immoral, why is the word causing you to palpitate and foam and the mouth?

    3. You just got it right. No goods from China should be allowed in at this point. You don't know who handled it and what virus they are carrying

  6. Interesting. It took some call outs for WHO to eventually declare the virus an emergency despite the rapid spread across countries and continents; they were quick to restrict travel during the ebola period and that was within a handful of African countries (except the foreign aid workers) BUT they have listed African countries already for coronavirus. Why not advise more on the over 19 countries that are battling with it? For years there have been calls for checks on the Chinese level of hygiene. A similar virus killed almost a thousand in this same China in 2002. Another in Saudi Arabia and WHO took their time and didn't issue warnings. I don't play the victim card but I watched WHO officials struggle with the CNN anchor when asked why they hadn't declared China's situation. But within a day of eventually declaring China, you make a list of African countries when even put together, we have less than even the UK and US. Africans need to rewrite their own narratives. A screwdriver drops in Africa, everyone hears. A whole tool shop collapses anywhere else, a cover up happens.

  7. I just reliably gathered that hundreds of Chinese that left Nigeria for their yearly Lunar festival will be coming back next week to Nigeria. Hmmmmm! The outbreak of this Epidemic in Nigeria will be catastrophic. The authority should not let them enter the country for now. Nigeria is mot ready for this. We still have lassa fever that hasn't been contained. May God help us.
