The sack was contained in a terse Government statement signed by, Paulinus Nsirim,Commissioner for Information and Communications, which directed Mr Ake to hand over to the most senior officer at the corporation.

Although no reason was given for the sack of, Vincent Ake, one of the Editors of the state-owned media organization said the GM was sacked for publishing report on the first case of COVID-19 in Rivers State without first getting approval from the Taskforce on Coronavirus set by the state government.

It was learnt that Wike was miffed that the state owned newspaper, The Tide, was one of the first to break the news of the first case of an infected person of Covid 19.

  1. Governor Wike that was too harsh, you should atleast given him a warning letter than a complete sack.

  4. This is an act taken too far and to the extreme but I wont fail to say, the GM also fault the rule. He should have notify or inform the task force in charge since it's a state own media. If it were to be a private media, I would hsve understand.

    2. Ethics of journalism makes it clear that no matter who is financing the news, the news is the news. The BBC won't wait for any permission before breaking a story, not even if it condemns their government as such would damage the public trust placed in them. Media is to be independent except the people in charge are fascists and dictators and this is the reason no one take NTA seriously. If the case was hidden and enough safety measures and funds were not made available to hospitals, you'll find a way to blame it on politicians you don't like.

Hiding this case could have caused the death of many exposed healthcare workers and would have made tracing contacts even more difficult. It could have shut the door to more financial aid and technical assistance from international partners. A civil servants job, especially that of a journalist is not to kiss the governor's behind or assist with the spread of propaganda but to tell the truth and be the 5th estate. Your buying this flimsy excuse from the governor's office is evidence of the mental slavery those in power, no matter their party, have successfully wrought on those who attended the schools they built.

  13. When they were saying no Corona virus in Rivers state, I just laughed. Rivers state that has an international airport with people flying in from the abroad everyday? Jokes. Other countries are giving their citizens the numbers as it is, we're here falsifying numbers.

Take care of yourselves people, your safety is in your own hands. The govt does not give a shit about y'all.

  14. USA have evacuated all their citizens in Nigeria, they don't even trust the Nigeria system in handling this Corona virus with all their lies, they lie about everything.

    1. Yes the US have taken their citizens back to the US, one of the countries with the highest rate of Corona virus cases. So what is your point again?

    2. As if the US is handling it any better.

    3. You lie too much anon 09:11, USA did not evacuate anything my father in-law is still in Nigeria. 2 of my co workers/some family friends are still there. All citizens! Stop lying unnecessarily please.

    4. 1. The USA offered to provide flights for interested citizens as long as they sign an agreement that they would return the funds upon getting back home.

      2) people in the USA also have cholera and HIV. The difference is the quality of care available and how isolation is not a death sentence. The doctors there are actually well paid and so, motivated. The nurses are actually well trained in the science of their work. There is enough money for tests and unlike Nigeria with only 2 labs that can test 60-120 per day, each state has numerous options. Germany is testing 500,000 per week and despite Trump's fiasco, regulations have been rolled back and the private sector would surpass those testing numbers. The hospitals have proper protective gear so facemasks, gloves, gowns etc are actually available. If you think Nigeria defeated Ebola, go back to history and see that partners linked and financed by USA saved Africans. Lassa that you've had 19 years to defeat, no progress, no isolation centre and doctors keep dying daily. If you use Nigerian healthcare system as Shakara for other ones, may you be here permanently, condemned to use it for life as your only option.

  15. May God give him a better job. He didn't follow laid down procedures, he should have been punished by a suspension or something else but a sack.

  16. Guys did you all notice that since 3 days ago, the government refuse to disclose the identities of politicians that tests negative to covid 19? But my fear is that they are not helping matters as it is now bcs its only when you know who has it you will be able to distance yourself from them and also go for check up if you in any way come in contact with the carriers. As they choose to hide them now it can only get worse it can't help the situation.
