Lagos State Govt Says Italian Who Entered Nigeria With Coronavirus Is Still In Isolation And Contagious..

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Friday told Journalists that the Italian index patient was still at the isolation centre.

Abayomi said “he is still secreting a little bit of the virus, meaning he’s potentially still contagious.”

“Our test suggests that his immune system will soon clear off the infection. The moment we pick that up, we will be looking for a second negative”, Abayomi added

“Let’s say the next test tomorrow is negative, we will repeat it after 48 hours, and if we still get negative, that means he’s deemed to be non-contagious”.

Abayomi noted that the index case would pose no danger to the community at that point, saying that he was almost at that stage and would be released soon.

The commissioner disclosed that the state government had intensified its surveillance at the nation’s airports.

He added that more health personnel to the airport to assist the Federal medical team to boost their surveillance.

The commissioner said that all the 179 people that had contact with the index case had been identified.

He said: “40 of them were quarantined in Ogun State, while 139 were monitored in Lagos State”.

“The contacts in both states have been discharged; they have exceeded the 14 days of quarantine and isolation at home without developing any symptom of the disease.

  1. The Prof is right. The Italian may be feeling better but can still be secreting the virus. It takes a while before the virus clears from the system. Plus it has been reported that in some cases, just when patients start feeling better, they relapse and some even die.

    2. 09:35, thank you for your analytical summation.

Stella, Germany has lots of infected people now, I don't think we are interested in their names. The countries that have stated the names of the infected are those that have social standing etc. Eg, health Ministers, footballers etc. Do we know even a single name from China where all of this started from?

It is also medically unethical to disclose the identities. A 26 years old lady that was initially cleared, got re-infected in one of the Asian states. It's why even In cases like thyphoid, you are re tested after treatment to ensure that you are in the clear. And thyphoid is not even contagious!

Also note that an international rep from WHO has visited and just yesterday, a top WHO official on international TV (Al-Jazeera) mentioned Nigeria as a country that's handling this virus well. These cases are all being monitored around the world.

Please let's give kudos where due. On this one, so far so good. We are not doing badly. The big countries with the supposed world class medical facilities and resources are groaning.

Well done Nigerians. I'm proud of us.

    4. Thank you @Anon. Its just like typhoid that doesn’t really go out of the system. He is feeling better does not mean he does not still have the virus in his system. Right now I give kudus to my country. So far, so good.
Please it’s not too late to go back to our biology textbooks and learn about how these grow.
America is now asking for prayers as they are getting helpless. Italy is at a crossroad.

Oya Stella, how far with una area? 😉

    5. Shyla, let me help Stella answer

      Germany:
      Confirmed cases :3,675
      Deaths:8
      Recovery: 25

Why isn't anyone questioning other regions? Please my dear Nigerians, in this particular instance, let's be proud of our status. Even if stuff happens afterwards, we don try!

    10. Bikonu can't they send this Italian back on a pj make Italy deal with their problem?
God for give me for being insensitive but nobody should put anybody at risk expecially in a country like ours that its only God that is protecting us.

  4. It’s possible to feel better, even enough to walk around and eat well when there are still traces of the virus in his system.
It’s just means he can still infect others so they will wait to get two negative tests before releasing him.

    1. Exactly!!!! I do not understand Nigerians o. Why do we complain about every thing all the time. He is recovered , but still testing positive so can’t be released . This virus is a new virus , and I bet it is mutuating. Everybody is still trying to get a handle of things . Na wa o . Always complaining everywhere . Let us apply common sense nah .

  5. Eating doesn't mean the virus is gone. They keep checking the viral load and that is what they are doing! And yes , they must release his name because of stigma.
FYI, my friend at the plant, who was on leave when the Italian guy visited the plant has refused to resume because he is avoiding those that were quarantined, stigmatization is real. Please sounding like a village champion Stella

  7. Release his identity so that jobless people will start trolling his family. Recall how they stigmatized members of the Ebola victims families.

  8. Which country released the name(s) of anyone except high profile people who informed the general public themselves. They can only release his name if he is fine with it . During the Ebola situation, Patrick Sawyer was a very destructive and uncooperative patient so that confidentiality flew off the window and besides he was dead . All the other people that were treated for Ebola did we get their names ? . Did we also miss the part where WHO thanked Nigeria for their contributions by making the structure abi nah profile of the virus they got from the Italian available in order to aid the fight globally? Maybe Nig Govt bribed WHO abi ? Or perhaps they manufactured the virus , or maybe it was imported . Plz let us be guided biko. Yes the men at the top will probably make an extra buck from this sad incidence , yes they will probably exaggerate figures but plz Nigerians in Nigeria plz be careful and do not listen to anyone implying that coronavirus isn’t here . It is HERE!!!! . Wash your hands , be aware . Grow the habit and consciousness now , just Incase there is an escalation. I am tired of all this insinuations that the virus and Italian where fabricated.

We thank God for not allowing this thing escalate in Nigeria.
Baba God please heal the world and stop the spread of this evil virus.

  11. We have only one case that has tested positive so there is nothing wrong in people asking for his name, stop comparing our case to that of Germany, china,Italy or iran, these countries have thousands of cases that have tested positive and I bet you some of their names have been disclosed by their governments to their people,Nigeria has one freaking positive case and we Ain't even coherent in our press releases, one day the man will be "chopping" amala, the next day he dey faint, today now he don serious again, believe Nigerian government officials at your peril, those piece of shits would poison you if you don't as questions.
