FG Says People With Over N5,000 In Bank Won’t Get Palliatives

The Federal Government has said that people with over N5, 000 in their bank account will not benefit from the palliatives to cushion the effect of the lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government also said that it will be using the mobile networks, to know people that top up the credit units for their phones with may be N100 or less.

Besides, the state governments will now be involved in the distribution of food items.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq stated this while briefing State House correspondents after meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Minister also said that the Ministry will now focus on the urban poor as it carries out with President Buhari’s directive on the distribution of palliatives to cushion the effects of COVID-19 on Nigerians.

According to her, “You are aware that the President in his broadcast of Monday 13th April, directed that we expand the beneficiaries of the conditional cash transfer by one million and in this regard, we are going to focus more now on the urban poor.

“These are people who depend on the informal sector to earn their livelihood; they are daily wage earners and these are the people that we are really going to focus more on as well as people living with disabilities.”

Giving details on how to identify the beneficiaries of the stimulus, she said that the Ministry has three options to be adopted in selecting the beneficiaries of the scheme.

She said, “Well, we have three options; one, we are going to use the national social register that we already have, two, we are also going to focus on the urban poor as I mentioned, by using their verified BVN accounts to get them, that is, people that have an account balance of N5, 000 and below.

“We are also using the mobile networks, to know people that top up the credit units for their phones with maybe N100 or less. Those are also people that we consider to be poor and vulnerable. So, these are the three options that we are exploring and I am sure that by the time we get this data we will be able to give this intervention.”

    1. Stupid idiots, do these Northerners have phones or Bank accounts. How much do they generating for Nigeria?
Does it mean that those working in cities, paying tax, building the economy don't deserve allowance.
Yeye country, they should learn from the UK government that is paying £94.25 per week Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) or 80% of wages to those not working during this crisis because they know we have to pay mortgages, electricity, feed etc.
Nigeria is a joke, the politicians are all first class thieves ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️.

    2. Most of the people on here are either totally detached from reality or they just want to talk! For those comparing Nigeria to Western/ industrialized nations, i wonder if they think Nigeria is as rich as those countries. It is a known fact that more than 50% of Nigerians lives below poverty lines(abject poverty). How on earth will the government get to these people? Everybody is just critizing govt, they have tried, can anybody explain a better way of getting across to these people? If you can't, PLS shut your freaking trap and face front. Given, if any of you is in Buhari's shoes, you will fail woefully... Let them do what they think is the best PLS... Half bread is better than none! Buhari can't and won't solve the poverty that has plagued Nigeria since IBB's regime. The other day, physical cash was been distributed, na una raise alarm that it won't get to the right people, now, BVN,phone air time and Less than 5k account balance, una open mouth...that what na?

    3. @ Stan, read the nonsense you wrote and ask yourself if it makes sense. Who says Nigeria is as wealthy as the other countries? To state that if you have 5k in your account then you are considered not to need help is a stupid benchmark, as stupid as your write up.

I am sure the govt can afford to give a lot of people 3k weekly. The target should be low income earners and poor households for crying out loud, they need to eat.

Nigeria does not have funds because you lots are greedy/selfish and will rather embezzle the money. These funds are in the hands of a few bastards, your thieving politicians.

She hasn't paid our Npower March stipend up till now. She announced yesterday that we'll start receiving credit alerts as from yesterday and nobody has still been paid so far.
The headline even looked like they want to give us dash but it's the march stipend that we are being owed.
Shey na sand we go dey chop?

So if I have #6,000 in my account now it means I'm rich and don't need the coro money.

So in your mind now, Nigeria is poor and not comparable to Western world? What are our leaders doing with all the money asides embezzling and not spending wisely?

    7. On the wealth part, Nigeria is actually very rich, unfortunately she has been cruelly robbed, displaced and sold by her heartless leaders. We were termed giant of Africa cos we had so much promise and energy. Every other country got better but we declined rapidly. Naira that was once above the dollar. If our leaders never stole a pin since 1960, by now we would have been a country to reckon with..

How i wish many of the billions these billionaires gave Govt they removed some millions and do a soup kitchen in disadvantaged areas just like they do for the homeless abroad. Pack the food in packs and co-ordinate the sharing. That way atleast once a day people are sure of getting a meal.

    2. Some of those donors do not really care about the poor rather for their corporate image, what they stand to gain from the government.
Capitalists care about their bottom line and would do anything to keep increasing it.

They are not truly philanthropic or altruistic.

Haven't you wondered why these donors do not dedicate just 5- 10% of their companies' CSR budgets to set up soup kitchens that will feed the poor/homeless all year round in strategic locations.

  14. There's an analysis I saw today.

    80 million Nigerians are Rich
    20 million are middle class.
    80 million are poor.

The 80 million rich can afford to feed the 80 million poor

    That's equating 1 rich to 1 poor.

The 20million middle class can provide for themselves for the main time..

That solves Hunger Virus for the main time

  28. It may be annoying but Nigeria is a poor country and if you have access to the internet- a smart phone and data money, you are broke, not poor. You can't compare our national purse with the stimulus package in USA and other developed nations and even they are borrowing against their currency to provide that palliative. The target of the urban poor will also favour more people in the south because that is where ghettos and slums are and they are the ones most vulnerable as they live so closely together and are too poor to stay home. That analysis of 5k in the account may be most useful here because even in some parts of Abuja, you can only get credit of N200. No one using a cheap phone can afford anything more than that and their populations are far more than those living in gated estates who can afford to wash their hands. Until we have a singular database like the USA or in Europe where every citizen has a social security number, it would be difficult to tell who is who.

For the hyperventilating, Good luck Jonathan also ran a shady register with sure-p that favoured people of certain leaning and it was abused by politicians and monies embezzled so expect more fires in more offices and little to no accountability. It is the way of government in frail democracies no matter who you are partial towards.
