Gov Ayade Says Extension Of Lock Down Will Spell Doom For Nigeria...

Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, has warned that any further extension of lockdown in the country in response to the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic will spell doom for the nation.

Ayade stated that the extension of the lockdown will give rise to uncontrollable youth restiveness, adding that it was better to lockout than lockdown.

Professor Ayade said the recruitment of 8,000 youths was targeted at avoiding social tension in view of the harsh economic impact created by COVID 19.

“With prices of oil falling, locking out is far better than locking down because another two weeks of lockdown will find this country under siege by young people. There is no way you can hold down these young energies for too long.

“It is demographic, it is statistics. Sixty-five per cent of the population is below the age of 35 and the virus itself does not have penetrative force in such demography and that is what we have to recognise as a country.”

The governor explained that the difference in climate conditions between the West and Africa was the reason the pandemic is ravaging that part of the world.

“Our demography is different from the west. Our climatic conditions are different. If you take the wind speed, the wind direction, sun intensity, radiation and the factors that govern the movement of a virus, ours is a situation that makes it difficult to spread with the speed it is spreading in the western world.

“So, our response strategy should reflect our environmental sensitivity. Maybe what COVID-19 will eventually do is to sharpen the consciousness of young people to come together.

“That will be very dangerous and so, to nip that in the bud, we have to find jobs for them because sincerely, that is the provision in the constitution. Section 14 sub-section 2 says the welfare and security of the people are the primary essence of government.”

The Cross River State Governor further disclosed that industries established by his administration will absorb the youths and get them engaged.

“I have to get the young people off the street; I need to get them engaged. I need to get them to survive and that is the essence of government.”

He explained that the urgency of the situation has forced his administration to slow down on major projects: “At this time, major projects have to slow down and we have to switch attention to the young people who for no fault of theirs are out of school.”

The governor advocated channeling donations to the COVID 19 campaign to job creation. “If you have international support of N21 billion, you have to find how to use it to create jobs and not how to use it on COVID 19 campaign because it will end one day,” he said.

  1. oil dy he head, we av been on lockdown for more than 14days, if this virus was ravaging nigeria, we would have been hearing people complain of the various symptoms. lock out is better, cos if the young ones are kept down for long it will lead to a revolution.. my opinion

    1. The reason it is not 'ravaging Nigeria' is because of the lockdown. US went from 15 cases to over 460,000 in 6 weeks with over 40,000 dead. Their president was slower than ours and their people were more disobedient. Hunger will NOT kill 40,000 people in 6 weeks. Hunger is not contagious. Hunger is temporary but death is final. If hunger is the problem then people are helping one another alongside other organisations, but if this thing breaks out, we will be picking corpses on the streets like in Ecuador. In eNew York, the city is renting cooling vans to help preserve corpses because morgues are overflowing. May we not be unfortunate. Ayade is there talking as him himself and the virus struck a deal.

    2. Anonymous 22:07, Thank you and God bless you. You got the nail on the head. Ayade with all his degrees is one of the Rogue Governors we have in Nigeria. I thought he had sense

    3. @anony, you're right. Till date, US has not had a total lockdown in any state. And they didn't start wearing masks till very late. Plus, they have a large percentage of the elderly population living in cities, and they travel a lot so I believe a large number of people brought it in from travel before the lockdown. Nigerians are trying given the very bad leadership we have. Luckily most of the elderly are living in remote areas. Infact we had a very good chance of fighting this if our leaders were brilliant and careful from the start. All hope ain't lost though, i believe Nigeria will beat this.

    6. Theres a dumb vibe oozing from comment. Ild rather be alive than dead. When the vacine comes out, then would it be safe to go out. BTW,dont you think nigeria is long overdue for a revolution? Or the leaders of tomorrow are still not born?

    7. Most countries have found out that we can't lock down forever that's why they are locking out. The way I see this virus, lock down or out people will still die if they are wont to die. Do you know how many people police have killed because of lockdown, people committing suicide, rapes and armed robbery going on now. I am a strong advocate of locking out with protective gears biko!!!

    8. The reason it seems not to be ravaging Nigeria is the lack of adequate testing, erroneous statistics and a high level of poverty and lack of education. Many with the symptoms could be treating the very common symptoms with OTC drugs.

    9. WHO has released an information adding Nigeria as one of the countries that will lose more people about the economic impact of the virus than the virus itself. Nigeria keep imitating European countries.

    14. Lily livered Gov. You must weather the storm by doing the right thing. Now is the time to show good governance. The man dey fear and doesnt know what to do hence his cowardly utterances. No be all of your citizens dey craze.Pet, beg, appeal, provide incentives, security whatever it takes to take good care of your citizens as you ensure lockdown.

    15. @anon 23:34 if you think the reason it is not ravaging Nigeria is from lack of testing, think again. Testing or no testing, if it was ravaging Nigeria you will see corpses on the streets. Our hospitals will be overwhelmed with people suffering from illnesses that OTC drugs will not cure. We thank God for his mercies as he knows we can’t cope.

  7. His postulation linking (extreme) warm weather to low COVID-19 cases hasn't been verified by research. We shouldnt create the impression that our weather disincentives the spread of the virus. Because Nigerians would run with it, which they are already doing. Disaster.
I so much love his take on welfare, social security for the poor masses. It's a huge responsibility on government, one made more onerous by the long years of neglect.
We can't afford to loosen restrictions at this time. With not enough testing done by NCDC and the states, I am afraid we have thousands of undetected cases. Allowing people to leave their homes will spell danger. Government should get on the business of ameliorating the suffering of the people.
Can I be frank with you? The lockdown for Abuja and Lasgidi peeps is still far. If I were to hapzard a guess that would be September.

  8. This Covid-19 brouhaha should make our leaders realise that more factories to ensure job creation and health care facilities need to be built. We need more of these than 50,000 seater churches.

  9. I didnt read what he said up there but my 2 cents are locking us up without testing people door to door or setting up test centres, figuring out vaccines rather than waiting for the UK dont even understand why we have an Institute of virology, not giving out palliatives is baseless and will not help anyone. Open up the country if you dont have a bloody plan! very clueless country alongside the people in power. Markets are opened wednesdays and Saturdays in the FCT and the crowd usually witnessed is atrocious, you find people without face masks, gloves, some rubbing on each other isnt this enough reasons to show how ineffective their plans are. Create your own plan and stop being a copy cat, the countries we are immitating are doing better than us in every sense of the word with regards to how they are effectively trying to curb the virus while helping their citizens even at that they are also tired the citizens i mean. Ghana is opened and have carried out more tests than Nigeria that claims its citizens are 200 million. My point is stop locking people up without an effective plan!

  13. Very true, Nigeria govt should free us, the lockdown is not even observed properly among the populace. The govt don't even have any plan in place of reopening the economy, no adequate testing kits, how long are we going to be indoor, the money they are distributing is not sufficient to go round. The hunger is killing more than the virus

  14. How can you propose a lock down without providing for your people? It's like Nigerian's are used to suffering and smiling.
Check the people supporting the lock down they are very okay and not hungry they would never consider those that do not have.

  15. Is this the first birus on earth? Why is this spectacular? Some entities with so much money at their disposable decides to hold the world to ransome for selfish reasons- create fear, institute a global control system, force human beings to accept a new way of life or die etc and it is cool. Nigerians have been faced with worse situations and survived resiliently. Our government isnt providing what other governments are doing and people cannot watch their families die. They must go out to FEND FOR THEMSELVES in this trying times. What exactly are the priviledged giving out? What is the government giving out? Are Nigerians beggars and so hungry they have to queue up for a morsel ofeal daily? That is the highest insult. If our government value lives, they will do the honourable tjing. They force Nigerians to pay tax and frankly Nigerians comply. What does goverment do with all that money? Since Nigeria has been srlling oil our natural resources, how many Nigerians have benefitted from the profits? What has the government been doing with revovered loots? Nigerians are eady going people and comply, accepting every SHIT forced down on them. But for how long? Can you watch your children die of hunger? Ehat will a PLATE OF COOKED RICE queued up for over 3 hours do gor a household? It is mot enough to FORCE PEOPLE TO STAY AT HOME, DO THEM NEEDFUL LIKE OTHER CLIMES and there would be no need for people defying the instructions. No one is saying do as much as the government of other nations. But our government must stop insulting our DIGNITY AND RIGHTS AS A NATION, please.

  18. To lockdown would av bn better, but without adequate palliatives you don't expect someone who has not eaten for a day and without any hope of eaten the next day to remain indoor. If you've bn there before you wld know how it feels to be without food. The government should do the needful otherwise the poor masses w
Will see no sense in locking them down. They would rather go out to look for food than to die of hunger.

  19. I 100% agree with ayade, finally a true African man has spoken. I think all those stupid leaders (infact I won't call them leaders) I mean government officials or copycats in Abuja should really go to school to learn about the act of government.they just lack common sense on the act of government which is why they always copy from other countries. Our environmental proposition is never friendly to this virus hence the lack of widespread. It's only a fool who will quench fire with fire. Hunger is deadly, even more lethal than the virus itself. People saying lockdown in this condition where there's not palliative are either never experienced extreme hunger before or they are fools!
