I feel strongly that the government has to rethink it's COVID-19 strategy.
ReplyDeleteWe simply do not have a national plan to combat the spread of the virus, and if we do have one, it's just not effective.
I have consistently hammered on the need to scale up testing, contact tracing and quarantine, and then management of infected Nigerians. At each phase, there must be facilities in place.
BUT the reverse is the case. Infact NCDC is seriously contemplating treating COVID-19 patients in their own homes. Have they considered the mammoth number of doctors and nurses that would be needed for that?
Yesterday, I read here that they are asking Nigerians to donate their homes. Is this not the height of foolishness. What happened to the hotels, mansions and high rise residential buildings under EFCC seal.
What trumps it all is that we are relaxing lockdown restrictions at a time when COVID-19 is on a sharp rise.

DeleteDa Epic, I think you are paranoid in your assessment. They asked that BUILDINGS be donated not people's homes and it's only in states that does not have plans. NCDC try o with the contact tracing job o. As stubborn as humans are especially the political class who brought this in in the first place refusing quarantine. Even at that, I still give them thumbs up. The problem now is Kano, the high population, the level of illiteracy, poverty, the bah kwomai attitude of its people and the ineptitude of their governor. Perfect formula for disaster. No NCDC magic can save a people like that. I agree with you that relaxing of lockdown is ill-advised. Many governments of the world are making exactly same mistake; figures are climbing and they are more concerned with their econmy.

I know people are hungry and things are hard but before corona nobody wan die and we used to say hinger no dey kee person. Let’s protect ourselves people, the government will sit in government houses while they ease movement for the masses to go and catch their deaths.

There is nothing we could have done and we can't even quarantine him because we've got no space.
See me here praying that it is not this virus but just Malaria. I'm really scared, very scared. I'm trying not to be but I can't help it. I'm just praying.

Casualties in Kano?
ReplyDeleteThere was Ebola, Lassa fever and why do you think this is not a yet to be identified illness.
We should be worried about that possibility too.
They have been stating that the cause of deaths is unknown, what we should be asking is what then is the cause of this sudden deaths and the actual numbers of casualties?
Why isn’t there researches to identity the cause of deaths.
The symptoms of this unidentified illness is not same as CoVid 19.
Kano state govt is being reckless with both the unknown killer illness and Covid19
It's unfortunate that Kano does not understand the gravity of this pendemic. Given the numbers that has come in just less than 2weeks, it's safe to conclude that Kano has the highest number of the cases. It's been underreported because of inadequate and late testing. It's ravamged the state already. Relaxing the lockdown is paradoxical given the high spate of confirmed cases. However, Nigerians are caught between loss of job, hunger and lack of palliatives to sustain the lockdown and stepping out and be exposed to the lockdown. The government sincerely has failed to create a balance between these two dangerous uncertainties. The government isn't helping with palliatives, it locked down the affected states for a month and within the time it merely conducted less than 11000 test out of which we have 2k confirmed cases; the government' is not making promises of speeding up the test nor assuring steps to share safety masks. Ironically, it is begging for ventilators and buildings from it's citizens and the world. You begin to ponder on what's done with all the billions donated. Or the loans gotten. More loans. Audio palliatives. No accountability nor accessibility. Ironically, Access bank after donating a billion is seeking to sack its employees. Sad times indeed. No government plans for it's citizens in creating any form of balance but a bold statement telling Nigerians that they are on their own. It's a sad time, but we pray we get through this
