President Trump Freezes Green Cards And Many Work Visas Until End Of Year

US President Trump on Monday extended a freeze on green cards for new immigrants and signed an executive order to suspend new H-1B, L-1, J and other temporary work visas for skilled workers, managers and au pairs through the end of the year.

The goal of the move is to protect 525,000 jobs as part of the White House response to job losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic, said a senior administration official, who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity. NPR first reported the impending order on Saturday.

"Americans have been hurt through no fault of their own due to the coronavirus," the official said. "And the president is prioritizing getting them back into the labor supply and getting them to work and standing on their own two feet again."

The order targets H-1B visas, which are designed for certain skilled workers such as those employed in the tech industry, as well as L-1 visas, which are meant for executives who work for large corporations.
But other workers will also be affected, including foreign au pairs who provide child care. Professors and scholars are not to be included in the order, the official said. There will be a provision to request exemptions. The order is not expected to affect immigrants and visa holders already in the United States.

Business groups are expected to oppose the move. But groups that want less immigration cheered it.

"President Trump has repeatedly promised that he would put American workers first, and to his credit, he did just that," said Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which advocates for lower levels of immigration. FAIR had called on Trump to suspend guest worker visas.

"For the most part, the president withstood intense pressure from powerful business interests that continue to demand more cheap foreign labor, even as they have laid off an unprecedented number of American workers over the past three months " Stein said.

In May, Trump issued a temporary halt on new green cards but stopped short of suspending guest worker programs amid concerns from the business community.

Plans for Monday's order raised significant concerns among business and industry groups. "The ban on H-1B visas, which are often used to fill very niche positions that are not easily found in the American workforce, will ultimately prove to be counterproductive and is an example of using a nuclear bomb to address a bar fight," said Leon Fresco, a former deputy assistant attorney general in the Obama administration who now represents H-1B workers.

The order did not apply to H-2A agriculture workers, who Trump says are necessary to ensure grocery store shelves remain stocked with fruits and vegetables. Health care workers involved in treating coronavirus patients will also be exempted.

Trump is the president of his country and whatever he thinks is best for his countrymen, he does it without thinking twice unlike what we have here.
Abeg, anywhere between Canada, US,Australia and Germany is a good travel to me.

    2. But why would protecting jobs for the Americans, equate to hatred for foreigners? Am I missing something here? If Nigeria was so good, wouldnt they be doing same? Putting their own citizens first?

  13. To be honest I don't blame him at all on this one. He has always been against immigration but now coupled with the pandemic and job losses he had to do this. Plus it's temporary. It will only affect new applicants, not those who already have it. If we are being honest, America has been really kind to immigrants. Even Nigerians..we've migrated successfully for decades now. Worked as doctors, nurses, military. Inspite of fellow Nigerians that spoiled it for others by overstaying their visitors visa and all. No other country in the world would have been as accommodating. Of course I know the US 'kindness' still na strategy to remain the world superpower but still.. we have the option to stay in our country but we decided to migrate. Not their fault.

  14. I told a friend of mine to leave for america when Obama was president. He kept postponing that he wasn't ready. I told him go and visit first...open up your passport. He refused that he wants to make money with a salary job. His entire family is there, they had processed everything just go and submit application for visa...excuses upon excuses. Buhari came in, Naija got worse, the salary was now slashed and trump became president. Now he has spent all his savings trying to leave 3times and nothing ...he just th lost the job.

Now that door has closed. School fees he paid and every arrangement gone...classic example of make hay while the sun shines.

    1. Sad for him but that's not the end of the world. This pandemic even made me realize that all our struggles and accomplishments can end in the twinkle of an eye. COviD is an equalizer, tragedies can happen anywhere. The job loss is everywhere. USA has had the most deaths of any country, including Nigerians who work as nurses. Imagine leaving Nigeria to US to get a good job as a nurse just to be killed by COVID. Pls let's not give in to any regrets this year, rather let's have hearts of prayer and gratitude. At the end not everyone can or should live Nigeria. We need to fix it for the future generation.

Also, he IS suffering as we speak cos he can barely feed. Get a little context before u start giving advice...thanks

    5. @anon, no matter his mistakes or failures, it is not the end of the world, that's my point.
"His siblings are doing well" - see, one reason to be grateful.
"his people are not dead from Covid." - see, another reason to be grateful.
May God grant us courage to change the things we can change, and accept those we cannot change. Right now, he cannot change his past actions/inactions or indecisions and is probably full of regret. If you are his friend, the best will be to encourage him and spread hope. Goodluck to him!

    2. Anon 20:30 I agree with all your points except that America's wackiest public schools are better than Nigeria's top schools. Please educate yourself. There are so many wacky public schools abroad that can't even be compared to many schools in Nigeria. Everything about abroad is not the best abeg.

    3. Mesh what in the world are you talking about? Your comment is so so wrong in all level. I live in US and you’re goddamn lying!!! You have a choice to either pay cash if you want a car or finance it monthly. No one is forcing you. We pay monthly phone here and you also have a choice to pay as you go just like naija. You’ll buy credit on the phone. As we’re speaking, I’m changing my furniture soon and I’m paying cash! monthly payment is also available. Nigerians over here are doing very very good. Once you put hard work into it, opportunities here are endless . And of course you’ll also see another set of Nigerians that are still struggling or working from paycheck to paycheck but not all. You sound frustrated maybe because you were denied visa couple of times. Stop jumping into conclusion! Stella please post. Thank you.

  16. The foreigners are the ones building America in terms of stem oriented specialties. Average American doesn't care about advancing in those areas, they don't want to stress themselves with studying further, that's why ordinary high school is a very big deal for them. They like their low wage paying jobs like cleaning, serving/bartending. Most of them are very unserious. I currently live in America and I have seen it all from plenty of .

    2. I also love here in America and these so called Americans also have top paying jobs and go to school. I went to college with them. Heck majority were whites in a classroom. Yea foreigners are part of the ones building America but not all. You’ll also see foreigners working two jobs and living from check to check. It all depends on individuality and life goals!

  17. By the way, the notion that whites do not go to school is a lie. They are still the majority in most schools minus Black Colleges, and in Silicon Valley and corporate America.
