Actor Yemi Solade Says Nollywood Is Now A Den Of Yahoo Boys And Prostitutes

Nigerian actor and filmmaker Yemi Solade who recently clocked 60 years of age has in a new Interview with Tribune disclosed that Nollywood is now a den of Yahoo Boys and Prostitutes.

According to the Nollywood Icon who has spent over 40 years in the industry, it has become so worse that one cannot even differentiate between the core professionals and the "class of clowns who have infiltrated the association".

He said "The Nollywood is not there right now. The Nolllywood you see now is all encompassing. It’s like an uncompleted building that is not guarded and what you meet there would amaze you. It has become an all comers affair, anybody can stroll in and act. All the Yahoo boy are now there, all the prostitutes that you can imagine are there. People cannot even differentiate between the core professionals and these class of clowns who have infiltrated the association, but they didn’t just fly in, some people whom you refer to as core professionals brought them in.

It’s just so porous that anybody can become an actor, the entry point is so porous and annoying. It’s a profession and it must be handled and treated as one. I am not really pleased with the state of the industry. It’s a professional body and we must portray ourselves as one that has mastered the art and craft of the profession".

  5. True sir, a profession is supposed to be respected as one because people spent four years in school to study the course. You don't just jump in and start practicing law or medicine without going to school for it, so should theater arts be. It's not supposed to be an all comer profession, the professional body (if there's any) should place some restrictions on movie productions and censorship. You have to meet certain standards for you to produce any movie, if not you're movies won't be released. To allow any production, the actors should be gob to some theater training institution to be able to qualify to participate in any production and anybody directing on any movie location should be a qualified artistic director from a known theater school. By so doing it will eliminate all these 'cut and join' productions you see out there. Every body is a producer, every body is an actor, everybody is a director. The theater we see today is just an ABSURD THEATER where the actors back the stage. Should we appoint theater critics to analyze every production before they're released, then you'll know that we are just kidding around. Acting should be respected,in as much as it involves play but it's no play! Little wonder the actors phase out so fast and new ones take over. The actors should get some kind of training so as to maintain the standard and endure longer, that's why you have actors training schools. In the US people like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts etc. are still active in acting, while so many of our actors like Tonto and others have become 'former actors', mediocrity! My two cents.

  9. I live in Asaba and I have seen some upcoming actresses in Asaba. They only date yahoo guys or they hoe around. INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, FACEBOOK, etc are the major reasons for the prostituting and yahooing.
The male ones are broke AF, as they can only be among crew members without consistent roles but I can't say if they do yahoo or not.
The reason for actresses and upcomings hoeing around is to basically lubricate their fake life and use movie as side hustle. They have unhealthy competition among mostly the females.

I will advise all upcoming acts to do skits, series, pun, etc. Slot of successful guys have blown because of social media. Namely: Bro Shaggy, Lasisi Elenu, MC Edo Pikin, Mr Macaroni, Sydney Talker,Laughphills, Nosa Rex the cum master, Prof Rolex, Woli Arole, Ayo Ajewole, Taoma, Kubosa choir, Romeo Without Juliet. They are making waves with skits now. Some are now with big endorsements and producers will pay hugely for them to take movie roles.

  12. Yemi Solade, Kunle Bamtefa, Sola Fosudo, Sola Sobowale, Ego Nnamani etc are a different breed from a lot of those who call themselves “actors”, and actresses after auditioning on someone’s bed or marrying a rich grandpa. I only recognize the ones I mentioned because some of them went to “Our UI”, where we went to Arts Theater to watch some of their live plays and we had Professors of Theatre Arts of repute some who are late now. RMD, Sola Sobowale, Joke Silva, Olu Jacobs are also some of the older trained actors.

He has a valid point though some of the new ones too like Adesua, Kemi Lala, O.C Ukeje etc studied theater arts. Every profession should have the equivalent of a certifying board or examination especially in a country used to idolizing the corrupt and immoral like Nigeria.

You should however leave room for the “Untrained Talented” like Tyler Perry who never had a chance to go to college but is highly talented. Funke Akindele “Jenifa” studied law but we can see her talent in the theater arena, same with Kiki Omeili who studied medicine! The audience will sieve the wheat from the chaff for those types like it did in favor of Tyler’s talent.
He does have a point as they go begging people of questionable income to finance “movies”. Hollywood is made up of talents but it still has its flaws as it’s skewed against black people but it’s intellectual bent has produced Ronald Reagan, late 2 term president and attracted the attention of President Barack and his wife Michelle who own Higher Ground Productions and are working with Hollywood. Oprah worked in a Baltimore radio station for years before her 25 year reign as queen of daytime tv. Nollywood should stop promoting prostitution by at least making sure they use talented people even if they chose to be hoes. There are people of loose moral in every profession! I only mentioned the actors up there because UI theater school was very talented and lively though I have a purely scientific background I went to watch live plays regularly up to the early eighties while in UI. I’m sure Nsukka, Ife, Benin and ABU etc had talents whose names I may not remember and who gave us classics like “mirror in the sun” by Lola Fanikayode, “Ripples” where Regina Askia acted, “Sura the Tailor”and “Village Headmaster“ among others. WNTV was the first TV station in West Africa. It may be a reason for the depth of the UI-Ife theater axis and I can see why Sola commented like he did. Baba Sala, Baba Mero where Adebayo Salami got national attention, Ogunde, etc were very talented actors that kept WNTV viewers glued for the few hours TV was on, I believe from 4pm to 9pm! Millennials and Gen Z cannot imagine life without 24 hr TV and Internet but it didn’t exist before Ted Turner’s CNN revolutionized TV with 24 hours news!

The internet generation think Nollywood was pioneered by people who frankly did not pioneer it but cheapened it, like genetically modified chicken’s mass production has made chicken cheaper but diminished the quality and safety of chicken, some people will not eat chicken that grew up in half a day but it’s getting harder to find 100% organic chicken!
