Adventures Of Oko Ashawo The Uber Driver - 35

Oko Ashawo is also complaining?Wahala dey be that!!!

COVID 19 and its impact is really beginning to show...Work has been pretty tough these days and it takes the special grace of God to make something tangible at the end of the day.

There is so much to contend with like the unfavourable curfew, less commercial activities, low fares, bad roads, unscrupulous law enforcement agents, security issues, very expensive car parts, heartless mechanics and the oga patapata of them all - the partial closure of Third Mainland Bridge, which has worsened the traffic situation.

With all these issues, we still find riders who take advantage of drivers and try to scam them of their hard-earned money. Usually, there are two options for making payments – cash or card. I don’t know why some customers will opt for cash payment yet insist on transferring money at the end of the trip.

I have had various experiences concerning transfer of monies that ended up not reflecting in my account. A few clients have even blocked my number as I tried to reach them for my money that I never received after claiming that the transfer had been made. Anyway, once bitten, twice shy. I made up my mind that I would never let any customer leave the car until I see my money in my account.

A few days ago, very early in the morning, my first request was from a guy who ordered a ride for his girlfriend and after arriving at her location, the fare was 3,500. Since it was a cash payment option, I asked for my money but the girl insisted that I call the guy that requested for the ride so that he can transfer the money to me. She set to leave the car but I told her politely she would stay with me until I receive my money.

I called the guy and he asked for my account details, which I sent to him promptly. He said he would send the money immediately and I told him that is not a problem, but his girlfriend will remain with me till I receive the alert.

He protested vehemently and asked me to trust him to send the money and release his girlfriend. ... No be today nyash dey for back.

It was already past 9am and she begged me to let her go since she was already running late as it had passed her resumption time. I just told her calmly that if I don’t get my money, I won’t release her. After waiting for over 15 minutes, she called her boyfriend’s number repeatedly but he wasn’t picking his calls anymore.

Surprisingly, this lady brought out money from her bag, paid me for the trip, hissed and walked away after banging the door. Huh? So this lady had money all the while but had planned to dupe me ?

I dey shine my eyes now o. Person wey dey cry dey see road.  .......

*Na wah oh...Cant you collect your money before the trip begins ?or collect a half of the payment?

    1. Thank God he was smart, that's how they go about defrauding people, then later be lifting up nonsense hands in the name of holy hands.
Please be smart like a snake o,because times are hard and some people want to take the opportunity to do evil to others.

  4. @Stella, money is not collected before the trip begins o. Though an estimate shows at the beginning of the trip, the final price will be affected by distance and time. For instance, an estimated trip of 2,000 may end up being 2,500 due to traffic

  5. I think Uber should totally scrap cash payments especially in a country like Naija. Where i live, there is no option for that, only card payments are available to avoid stories that touch.

    1. One of the reasons I stopped doing card trips is because of some of these unscrupulous drivers. There was a time I was in a hurry since I was late for a meeting. I came down from the car and dashed for my meeting expecting that the driver would end the trip. I was surprised when I got a receipt later in the day for about 8k when the trip should have not been more than 3k. I was so mad that I had to send a mail to the e-hailing company. They promised to investigate and pay me my refund. Up till today, nothing was done about it 😏

  6. That thing has happened to me before. took a bolt to Lagos Airport. There was a bolt discount at that time and it reduced my fare by about 600 Naira. I dont know how the driver did it o... our screens were showing different cab fares. I politely insisted that what was on my screen was what I thought I should pay. Driver said mine is wrong o.. started giving some explanations.. I was running late with checking in so I just gave him the money, even added tip sef (pained me shaaa)...

    1. People should be wary of some drivers o. I hear some have different screenshots of different prices and that's one of the ways they scam you. They pretend and tell you that it probably a network issue meanwhile they are showing you a fake screenshot of a higher amount especially for cash trips. Make una shine una eyes.
For those on card trips, make sure the driver ends the trip in your presence o

  7. Oko ashawo, please continue doing like that. My hubby did uber and he told me all these.

Even I myself, when I use a ride-hailing service and I chose the cash option, sometimes I intend to transfer. But I didn't think it was necessary to tell the driver before hand until one driver had to tell me how it frustrated his plans because he didn't have an ATM card on him and he wanted to buy fuel with the money. I apologised profusely.

He didn't let me leave until he received the alert. Another alert entered his phone later because I had done the transfer twice. And I sent him my account details for a refund. He promptly refunded.

Some people are wicked. Some are good. But let us try to understand each other. Next time, if you receive a cash trip, ask them beforehand if they're giving you cash or doing transfer. So both of you know. And yes, don't let us leave till you've been credited.

Are you now in Lagos? No longer Abuja???

  11. Zenith bank transfers from current account to another source doesn't go sometimes, they will show 'transaction successfull' but won't debit the current account.
From a POS it will debit and show 'transaction declined'haba.
God save you if you forget to collect the POS Receipt which when tendered takes 10 whole working days to reverse ehh,the money is goneeee. So probably the guy paid, was debited but you were still calling for a transfer, vexbody plenty for EKO.
You took the right decision by the way.

For heartless mechanics, oko ashewo if you quarrel with a lagos mechanic, biko change to another one especially if you drive Toyota cars,e get why.
