Family Of Vendor Killed By Speaker HOR Gbajabiamila's Police Escort Demand For N500 Million Compensation

The family of Ifeanyichukwu Okereke, a vendor who died after being shot by a security aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has written a letter to the Speaker, demanding N500 million.

.This is according to a letter dated November 23, 2020, signed by the lawyer of the family, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN).
.
Ozekhome was given the mandate to write the letter by the father of the deceased, Okorie Okereke; and the younger brother to the deceased, Destiny Okereke.
.
The Department of State Services had last week arrested the operative, Abdullahi Hassan, who shot Okereke while Gbajabiamila had also visited the family of the deceased and promised to ensure that they do not suffer.
.
However, the family demanded more, adding that nothing could bring the dead vendor back to life.
.
The letter read in part, “Our clients have instructed us to make from your good self, the following modest demands: That you use your good offices to ensure the immediate prosecution of your security aide (Abdullahi Hassan), who went on a frolic of his own, clearly acted outside the purview of his duty and responsibility by shooting to death an innocent, harmless and armless citizen.
.
“That you adequately compensate the Okereke family with a modest sum of N500m only. This monetary demand can never adequately replace or take the place of their son, husband, brother, and breadwinner’s life. But it will at least mitigate the obvious trauma and hardship the premature demise of their irreplaceable breadwinner has placed on them.”
.
The family also asked the Speaker to ensure that the safety of vendors is guaranteed as they had become afraid to return to the streets since the tragic incident.
.
The Okereke family said it would take legal action against Gbajabiamila if all the demands are not met within seven days.

  1. In as much as what happened to the young man was very bad , this demand , will it bring back the dead.

The late man's family hired Ozekhome , they shouldn't spend what they have thinking these people will deliver .

    1. You are right that it will not bring the dead back but in Insurance, the value of human life is unlimited so they have every right to demand any amount of their choice..My own is the Police officer should face the full wrath of the law. I am very unhappy with what happened

    2. Absolutely you are right. The money is too much abeg. Even though I know it's not equivalent to a life but the family should take it easy. They shouldn't make it seems as if they are trading their son's death for profit.

    5. What money is too much. Try loosing a loved in such manner and see if you can equate the soul with money.

    6. Are you a lawyer?
Don't you know they will negotiate that compensation?

You guys will carry police brutality on your head yet someone takes action but the money is too much. Bunch of hypocrites.

  3. So this man went to the vendor's family to "make promise?"
How much is promise for goodness sake?
Same promises you all made since 2015; 24 hours electricity,
    Free education to university level?
    Free good roads without (Lekki)tollgates?

Nice to know that a SAN has joined the fight.

  4. No amount of money can quantify the life wasted, this amount should be a 'chicken change' to give. Let them do the needful and justice must also be served.

  5. And they should get it! The life lost and the impact on the bereaved is worth a lot more than that.

  6. Let's hope this will yield the expected results, because this is Nigeria

  8. Hmmmmm this family should not expect 500 million, very soon the narratives will change it won't be about gbajabiamila against but the police, Afterall the police guy shot not gbajabiamila. How much is the police guy's salary. I hope this case isn't dead on arrival

    1. Unfortunately the case is not dead on arrival. Under the docttrine of strict liability, a master is liable for the acts carreied out by his servant. Though there are exceptions to this rule but i doubt those exceptions will avail in this instant circumstance

  9. I sympathise with the family of the dead, they deserve justice and are entitled to some form of compensation even though no amount of money can equate human life, however, for a family that hasn't even seen 10million even when their breadwinner was alive, demanding for 500million is just being greedy.

  10. From the comments I'm reading on here, no one had obviously seen the big picture.

The family did not institute the suit , the lawyer did. In normal circumstances , a vendor cannot afford a SAN to talk of an ordinary lawyer.

The wife would have signed some sort of agreement relinquishing a certain percentage probably 50% cos the lawyer will use his money until they are paid.

Also, the money was hyped to that amount so they can "settle" on a smaller figure later.

If the family even sees 10m out of that money, they should thank God cos filing in court no reach 100k.

Unfortunately that's the modus operandi of this "senior" lawyers, always looking out for their pocket and not justice.

    Hope this clears it up.

  11. In a sane country, they will get a huge amount of that 500m but in Nigeria where corruption is the backbone I doubt it...

  12. The family demanding 500 million is not too much. Yes, he may be a newspaper vendor but someone with life has hope. His fortune could have changed overnight and his assets will be worth more than that. No amount of money is worth a life and i am disgusted at people saying the money is too much.

I don't know why BVs speak from two sides of their mouth. You are against police brutality yet someone takes action and it is too much. The action may not bring back the dead but it serves a deterrent to other high ranking officers that cant control their police aides, it will prevent loss of more lives.

That's why i hardly comment on all those end sars and end police brutality issues because a lot of you are more emotional than logical. When actions are taken, you will be the ones saying it is much.

Because he is a newspaper vendor, he deserves his life to be cut short and his hopes dashed.

Choose a side. Are you truly against police brutality or you are just against Buhari's government?
