Convicted Husband Killer Maryam Sanda Loses Appeal

An Appeal Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday, December 4, dismissed an appeal filed by Maryam Sanda who was sentenced to death for the murder of her husband Bilyaminu Bello  .

Mariam who the daughter of Maimuna Aliyu Sanda,an Executive Director of Aso Savings and Loans Plc, was given the death sentence in January 2019, after the FCT High Court found her guilty in 2017 of the murder of Bello, a nephew of Alhaji Bello Halliru Muhammad a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Maryam Sanda who was not satisfied with the ruling had approached the appellate court to challenge the decision of the High Court.

In the Notice of Appeal predicated on 20 grounds, she had prayed the appellate court to set aside the verdict of the lower court and acquit her; claiming that the trial judge was tainted by bias and prejudices.

She also alleged that the presiding judge of the FCT High Court, Justice Yusuf Halilu, gave the verdict; despite the reasonable doubt that was “created by evidence of witnesses; lack of confessional statement; absence of murder weapon; lack of corroboration of evidence by two or more witnesses; and lack of autopsy report to determine the true cause of her husband’s death.”

Furthermore, Maryam Sanda had insisted that the judgment of the trial court was a complete miscarriage of justice on her; challenging the charges preferred against her and the jurisdiction of the court as evidence of bias; and a denial of her right to fair hearing as constitutionally guaranteed.

She, therefore, asked the Court of Appeal to allow her prayers; and set aside her conviction and sentence, and subsequently acquit her.

However, in a two-hour judgment, the Appeal Court’s presiding judge, Justice Steven Adah, threw out Maryam’s appeal and held that the court is duty-bound to do justice according to law and not sentiments.

Justice Adah averred that the law does not leave room for irregularities, adding that parties must conduct criminal trials according to the law.

    3. It's true the man s cheating contributed to her behavior but saying it brought out the worst in her isn't true. Anger is a terrible emotion and when one isn't in charge of his /her emotions, anything can happen,
it's just a matter of time . I read that the deceased divorced the first wife to be with this lady. So what was she expecting exactly?? That he will stay true forever? According to the prosecutors, she killed him, then tried to hide the evidence. I feel sorry for her though. No family deserves this kind of trauma. The most heartbreaking part is that their kids are at risk of loosing their only parent.
It's extremely difficult to be rational when a spouse cheats but for the sake of your kids and loved ones, you have to stay strong.

Our people said that "eburu ozu onye ozo odika ebu nku" (if they carry another person's corpse it will be like they are carrying wood)

    5. What happened to her walking away? If someone or something steals your joy please avoid it with everything in you. You should never stay where you are not happy and suppress your feelings else one day you will have an outburst.

Besides, People need to learn how to regulate their emotions.
She wasn't all that mild to start with. She only needed a catalyst to bring out that other side of her she never even knew existed.

No one is worth going to prison for. The best revenge is keeping those who hurt you very far from you. You don't let them pull you down with them else they won. Her husband cheated but he won.

  7. See how anger just made dis pretty lady finish her life, she will be regretting why she didnt just divorce the man and be raising her kids in peace.
I have a cousin who found out her husband who lives in Abroad impregnated and has even been living with a woman there. They have 3 kids together. I cant believe how strong she has been, said she has to be strong for her kids. Last two weeks was her daughters 10th bday, she had a big party for her daughter, she was just dancing throughout.
She is going to file for divorce soon,as the man is even showing no remorse.
