Mrs Dee's Corner - Church Traditions On Marriage Ceremonies..

Every church has its set of rules, which guides the members of the church on what is acceptable and unacceptable when it comes to tying the knot.

While some forbid the engaged couple to visit each other in their houses, another church frowns at the 'you may kiss your bride ' injunction and there is no exchange of wedding rings during the exchange of their marital vows.

I was a member of Deeper Life Campus Fellowship as a student and in all the weddings that took place in their main church, no sister was permitted to wear the beautiful wedding gown we are all used to. What was allowed was this satin material sewn as a gown with puffy sleeves that made the bride look ridiculous and basic while the man appeared dashing in his suit.

The most impossible rule I have heard about one of these churches is that the ladies must not marry men from outside the church. Their reason being that the sisters will be drawn away from the faith and it left me wondering if there are different aspects to the Christian belief.

The rule left many sisters unmarried and well into their late forties, while the men opted for younger sisters.

One kept turning down suitors who asked for her hand in marriage from outside the church, but when age was no longer on her side, she finally got hitched to a member of The Redeemed church.

The number of dos' and don'ts concerning marriage can be overwhelming and I can't help asking if this is not a hindrance to a happily married life and home.

  1. In my church, you must not get pregnant as they carry out pregnancy test. A lady's wedding was cancelled the morning of her wedding. And all those marriage books you must read. Abeg*1000

    1. Our choir Mistress wedding was cancelled few days to her white wedding. It was a traumatic moment for her after the whole arrangements....I refused to be deceived, just do the traditional rights and we're good to go

  2. My sister married from a deeper life and I’m so flaggerbasted by the rules governing relationships in their church
If u must visit ur husband to be, the bride to be will go with a sister in the church while the suitor too will bring a brother from the church while both intending couples sat miles away from each other to avoid “temptations”!! It’s so funny and annoying at the same time
The women leader will do a thorough check on the bride’s wedding gown if there’s any paparazzi that’s not supposed to be there, they will tell her to remove it and sew it properly
    like really
Even my sister had to change shoes twice cos they said it’s too high and blocked
Omo different churches with their weird doctrine!
    I no fit lailai

  3. This happens when churches stop preaching about true Christianity and concentrate on Religion. Religion has destroyed many and will still destroy more if care is not taking.

  6. Just look at the kind of hold religion has on people

In my culture, as long as the woman’s wine has been completely carried, she’s recognized as a married woman. All these church rules are just man made rules.

Imagine missing out on your God ordained soul mate just because they aren’t members of your “church”. Sad.

  10. Well, people see these rules and regimentation and submit themselves to them instead of studying the bible to understand Christ and
his teachings. Where in the Bible; Old and New Testament did a wedding take place in synagogues or "churches?" Is marriage one of the
assignment that Jesus gave to his disciples in the "great commission?" Have they no abandoned winning of souls to pursue what is
the sole responsibility of the daddies of these ladies? Once a lady's bride price is paid to her dad, she is married. That is SCripture.
Christ paid for his bride, the Church on the cross. The marriage supper in heaven will still be held in heaven. So after the bride price
ceremony, every other ceremonies are mere formalities. Yes, (Eph. 5:22-33) Marriage is a mystery like Christ and the Church.

  11. Let's see how the "bride adorns herself for her bridegroom?"

Isaiah 61:10 I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me
with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns
his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

    Song of Solomon 1:10
Your cheeks are beautiful with ornaments, your neck with strings of jewels.

    Isaiah 49:18
Lift up your eyes and look around. They all gather together; they come to you.
As surely as I live," declares the LORD, "you will wear them all as jewelry and put them on like a bride.

    Revelation 21:2
I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

  12. What God frowns at is sexual immorality; fornication, adultery.
Before you say "I do," be chaste. After you say "I do," be chaste
and faithful to your husband. 😘😘😘😘😘

  13. The Christian faith usually starts by the conviction of the Holy Spirit, but after a while the faith degenerates into religion - dos and don'ts.

Deeper Life is one church that is fast losing members to other churches like MFM, Living Faith (Winners) and RCCG, mostly because members have unresolved issues despite their diligence and dedication to church rules.

The elderly ones are turning to Winners for 'prosperity' while the middle age among them are trooping to MFM for 'deliverance.'

Religion is no match for reality. Man made rules cannot produce godliness or righteousness.

Pastor Kumuyi has told the world that the rules were set to help the church. He apologised and promised to eradicate his doctrines before he vacates the scene, so whoever is still hung up to man made doctrines would have self to blame.

An ex member recently started a series to expose the wrongs in the church. I can post link, but I am not sure links are allowed.

  14. Anybody to keeps to these laws is just plain stupid.
    Don't be ludicrous

  15. You must not get pregnant o, the church will send you to their assigned hospital, where a nurse will take your blood sample and urine a day before your wedding.

If you are pregnant, no wedding for you.

  16. Some of these laws are good, so as to stop lawlessness in the church, because where there are no laws, people go astray and do whatever they feel is okay.

But, the truth is that some of them are really ridiculous and do not serve any purpose except that of whoever made the rules.
My take is that, churches should doable review of some of its rules, because nothing is caste in stone.

  17. I'm sitting comfortably on this seat. My dad is a pastor in deeper life church and my fiance is a Catholic. My dad said he'll NEVER give me out. We just carry our two left legs waka go do Court wedding o. None of my sisters have done traditional marriage till date because he refused to collect bride price maka na none of their husbands are from deeper life. Mine is worse because he sees Catholics as devils and idol worshippers

    1. What an irony. When Kumuyi's son got married, his wife (also the daughter of a top DL pastor in Jamaica) had on makeup, earrings, fitted wedding gown, flowers etc. Both parents were also present at the wedding. Just goes to show that different set of rules for the elites and mere members.

People need to wake up and stop being controlled by doctrines that are not from God.

    2. Lol the hate on Catholic Church is real tho 🤣🤣🤣
Me I’m Catholic sha and I no get energy for wahala. To the best of my knowledge, the whole process leading to the wedding and all that isn’t as stressful as other churches make it seem, never been married anyways so I can’t really say for sure. But I’m really looking forward to attending marriage classes abi what do they call that thing they do for them 🤔
If the church decides to stress me I’ll carry my wedding elsewhere biko . Imagine missing out on a good suitor because you both don’t attend the same church, anyways marry your church member oo so none of the things being done in the church will seem strange to you.
Till whenever I marry, na Catholic I dey!

    4. sorry a lot of catholics i know do not see anything wrong in fornication...even the married ones especially men go to their mass steady and see nothing wrong in adultery, they do not even believe in being born again. i have alot of catholic friends cos i went to a catholic sec sch.. these are things you will hear in Pentecostal churches and know that as a born again believer you should not do. that is not to say people do not disobey though, but when you hear a teaching over and over you will definitely want to obey God. i personally would not have married a catholic because of my reservations with their giving too much worship to Mary but my sister is married to one and her marriage is happy. if you know what goes on in the Vatican you would know that the catholic church is like a cult, especially all the so called knighthood etc..occultic men who are just elevated in ceremonial garbs..the anonymous 15:37 your father is just being difficult and wicked. there comes a time you need to allow your kids who are adults make their own choices.

  18. For the Catholic Church, marriage is a Sacrament i.e. an outward sign if inward grace. Those who really matter for the nuptial exchange are the couple, at least 2 witnesses and the priest who represents the Church and in whose presence the exchange of vows are made. The rest na paparazzi. Somr people after going for marriage classes can just go any day of the week to bless their marriage. However, because most people like show off, there are always excesses

    1. Catholic marriage and rules are very clear. Generally, you are allowed to be adult and not dictatated to or monitored like police. The Catholic Church trains you to use your brain and conscience to serve God in sincererity and come as you are before God and His Church. Catholics marriage is not moin, moin but deeply rooted in the couple's commitment to Christ. The church encourages clean love and courtship before marriage, a preparatory class not less than 3 months, conclusion of civil and traditional rites of marriage and placing bans of marriages which a public announcement of marriage so as to clear anything that may hinder the marriage. One of the joys of being a Catholic is that the Church prepares you for the realities of life here and after. Empowers you with the tools of a good daily life in God. You can mistakes and you can ride but keep going, keep the faith. Catholic marriages is to help both spouses attain eternal bliss
