Couch Convo - Is Polygamy Really Scriptural?

Is there anywhere in the bible that Jesus Christ or anyone else preached and asked believers to divorce their wives and have just one?

When Christ walked this earth, polygamy was the order of the day in Israel. Can anyone show us any verse in the Bible where Christ condemned polygamy out rightly?

Let's talk..

    2. Malachi 2:14-15 made it clear on God's stance on Polygamy. He made them one man and woman and not a man and plenty women. And he frowns at polygamy.

    3. God doesn't grown at polygamy. There is no place in the Bible where God said polygamy is bad. As far as marriage is involved it's not a sin. He himself instructed Solomon to marry as many Israelite women as he wanted but he should avoid the Philistines and other foreign women so they don't introduce their gods to him but Ofcourse he disobeyed. In the new testament Paul and co never condemned it but if you want to be a bishop or elder in church you have to be married to one wife not because it's a sin but because it comes with a lot of baggage and you might not be able to focus on your assignment.

    5. The bible also did not say God frowned at it. What God frowned at was solomon marrying wmen with foreign gods and how it made him go astray

  5. The Bible instructs monogamy right from the beginning. Genesis 2:24
The Bible does not have any evidence of God condoning or encouraging Polygamy but just like sin, it went on because God is merciful..Silence is not agreement.

In every case in the Bible where a man had more than one wife, it was always in contentious and unfavorable circumstance.

When the scripture said "husband and wife become one flesh".. how does introducing a third party or more aid that process??

    2. Actually, silence means consent as a general rule.
I also don't agree with your 3rd and last paragraph..
Many polygamous marriage weren't contentious. I don't think there was anywhere recorded where Jacob wives, Leah and Rebecca had issues.. I can mention more, but just picked out Jacob cos Stella used him as an example above.

    3. Dante, surely you recall how Jacob got Rebecca and the favoritism going on in his household. They had lots of issues.

    4. Such issues happen also in monogamous home.. IMO, these are not 'complex' issues enough to discredit polygamy

    5. The question is if Polygamy is scriptural and that's in line with my previous answer. You deviated and i responded accordingly not discrediting.

    8. Dante Rebecca and Leah had issues because Jacob loved Rebecca more than Leah and God shut her womb because of that to give Leah an edge over Rebecca.

    9. Jacob loved Rachel at first sight and slaves for her father for years in order to marry , only for him to be cheated on the wedding night and given Leah instead.

He had to agree to work for some more years to be given his true love, Rachel. That was the origin of his polygamy.
So , there was serious contention FROM DAY 1.

  6. Mark 10:2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, d“Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” 5 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But ffrom the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ 7 ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,1 8 and THE TWO shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

What Christ defined in the above Scriptures:
    1. Gender; only two, MALE and FEMALE
    2. TWO are joined in marriage as God made it from the beginning of creation, not 3 or 4.
    3. Marriage is between MALE and FEMALE and is meant to be for life here on earth.

Any other contraption apart from the above is an aberration made by man and inspired by the devils. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

      2. There are ladies trousers and there are male trousers. There are also unisex wears.

    3. Anonymous 13:19 stop misquoting the Bible. They were addressing the issue of divorce and not many wives. What God has put together let no man put assunder. Meaning even if he married 10 wives divorce shouldn't be a thing. It is between a man and woman not man and man or woman and woman.

    5. The key word here is IN THE BEGINNING it was not so.

"And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him AN help meet for him". Genesis 2:18.

The All knowing God knew that one woman was enough for one man as the helper he designed her to be. And he made it so.

    2. Polygamy is not a sin because marriage is involved and marriage between man and woman is not a sin no matter the number

    3. Obviously those into polygamy will feel it is not a sin and those against it would feel it is for various reasons with parts of scripture to back it up. My opinion is do what will make you avoid problems and complications in life and give you peace. Anything that would eventually lead you to sin should be avoided.

  9. Did you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and will stick to his wife, and the two will be one flesh’? So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has yoked together let no man put apart.”—Matt. 19:3-6.

these were Jesus words. Notice he didn't say the man will stick to his wives but wife. Jesus was very clear about God's standard for marriage.

The first record of polygamy is with Lamech, a descendant of unfaithful Noah (Gen 4:19), the Bible said he took 2 wives. so other people copied and it became a culture but polygamy is not scriptural.

Proverbs 5:18 encourage a man to rejoice with the wife of his youth.

  11. Well, polygamy is not a sin...even if bible says 1 man 1 wife. It didnt apply to bible days or did it? Any man that wants to marry multiple wives should be able to build houses for each in different locations, dont let them live together, or 1 wife in US, one in UK, one in Nigeria....very sweet, they can cheat on you while you run around trying to satisfy them😁 times, I dont envy polygamous homes, no matter how sweet they portray themselves...I prefer my nuclear fam...no CAP.

  14. Please we need bible and religious scholars, not all these yeye pastors and preachers that don't now anything.. is only how they can twist the bible for their selfish interest they know..
    Their 2 favorite quote-
    1. Touch not my annoited.... so they can do rubbish without being called out.
    2. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse 😃..

From my research tho, there was no where in the Bible that condemned polygamy.. monogamy is just a tradition by the church, it doesn't have Biblical backing, just like the way there's church wedding now, there was nothing like that in the Bible. These are just man made rules.

Don't even bring 1 corinthians 7 into this, that was a letter response by Paul, to a letter that was earlier written to him.

  15. Polygamy is not sanctioned by God. The old testament characters who practiced it were excused because Holy Spirit did not indwell any of them. This dispensation is different. The presence, activities, and power of the Holy Spirit can be hindered greatly by unholy sexual act. Sex is one of the means to spiritual bonding of two people. This is the reason polygamists are not allowed to assume leadership position in the Body of Christ.

    The Absolute Truth:

Contrary to the notion that men are dogs and are polygamous by nature, I submit that WOMEN, especially singles, would not vote for a monogamy lifestyle in a secret opinion poll.

Women won't let men practice monogamy.

It wasnt long ago when Toke Makinwa sent a memo to Annie Macauley about becoming a co-wife.

I understand Toke Makinwa's memo to Annie was a joke. But truth be told: a lot of women go after rich marred men and expect their wives to share them in peace.

  16. It's greed or desperate that makes women accept being second, third, etc wives.

  17. The church allowed polygamy until the Elizabethan era. Catholic priests were allowed to marry, some were even polygamous until the twelfth century when issues of inheritance cropped up and pope Urban had to stop priests from marrying. There was nothing like white wedding until 1841 when queen Victoria wore white for her wedding. Before then people wore whatever they had at home. Today, some Nigerian women who have no sense of history insist on white wedding and push young men in into debts that creates crisis in their marriage
From Abraham to Joseph(joseph wasn't) , all the men in the linage of Christ were polygamous. If you have the resources to marry more than one woman and you can manage their nuances and excesses of the women, go for it. I hate polygamy with a passion, I grew up a polygamous home, it was a war zone. I have friends who grew up in polygamous homes that were alot better than mine.

    1. A lot of single and divorcee African women do not mind being a second, third, or fittieth wife as long as the man is rich. It is all about money and personal agenda.

Polygamy is more of a safety net for many African women.

My father was a polygamist and I hated him for it till he died. Worse still, everybody in my family is aware of my hatred for him. I suffered most the brunt of his foolishness as the first son and had to struggle through life, despite his riches which I never enjoyed. I paid my way through school and trained my younger ones too.

The two children the knucklehead adulteress woman had for him dare not come around to claim any inheritance. I am very sure their mother told them to stay away.

Even the woman would have been six feet under if not for Christ.

Men who abandon their first love and children to cater to children from other failed relationships often do so under satanic influence.

A lot of women in Africa who are open to polygamy, more often than not, are fetish; and they are never in short supply of foolish men.

Polygamy is evil. There is nothing good about it.

  20. God's design for marriage was clear from the beginning when he chose to create one Eve for Adam, I believe Adam was not lacking ribs for God to have created a second woman and God also was not lacking ability to create a second Eve...from the beginning he made 1 female for 1 male.

Even when he instructed Noah to take in animals into the boat, he asked that a pair of each be taken in - one male, one female was enough to proliferate the specie. God did not ask for a second female animal as back up in case the first had issues.

Polygamy is/was not God's design for marriage.

    1. It is humans in their tiny wisdom that usually mess up things. God in His infinite mercy and love for man sometimes overlooks certain things. If He dealt with us according to what we deserve no one would stand.

  21. Polygamy will always be a patriarchal construct to me. There is nothing in the Bible that says God designed this concept, this was something that men created. There are many things that God has not spoken about in the Bible specifically that were designed by men for their own experience.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ignorance of Bible is ignorance of Christ. That someone did something in the Bible and it was recorded does not make it right. The name Satan is in the Bible does not mean you can name yourself. The old testament and the new share a link. The old testament was a foreshadow of the new and Jesus said many times that he came to perfect it. He came to bring clarify and remove the cut-corners and burden introduced by a fallen system. Now the old testament shows the origin of judaism. Jacob, Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon could be called Jews but then Judaism does not permit polygamy, it was not about marrying many wives. They only had one wife at a time, that was why the issue of divorce. Solomon was never permitted by God to marry many wives, go and read your Bible, very well. In those days marriages were used to make treaty with other kingdoms. These people had other women by their thinking not God's permission. Abraham slept with his wife's slave in order to please her. Jacob because he These as deceived. David out of lust. They cannot be called Christians. Christianity started with Jesus and is the new covenant and we follow Christ and his views is that the original plan of God which still holds today is one man one woman. Any other is of the devil.
