"With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that's what everyone around you says is the right thing to do," Smith said on the latest episode of "Red Table Talk" on Facebook Watch, which was released on Wednesday.
She added: "So I was like, 'How can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind?' Also, doing research into polyamory, the main reason why divorces happen is infidelity."
Smith was joined at the table by her cohosts Jada Pinkett Smith (her mother) and Adrienne Banfield-Norris (her maternal grandmother). On the episode, the three family members had a candid discussion about polyamory, which is defined as openly engaging in more than one romantic relationship at the same time.
Polyamory falls under the umbrella of ethical nonmonogamy, a dating practice in which partners can openly date multiple people without deceit or infidelity. There is no single way to engage in nonmonogamy, as relationship structures can include from throuples (composed of three people dating each other) and polycules (which involve four or more people dating each other).
Smith, who's the daughter of Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, said one of the reasons she was interested in ethical nonmonogamy was that she "was introduced to it through a nonsexual lens."
"In my friend group, I'm the only polyamorous person, and I have the least sex out of all my friends," the 20-year-old star said in response to Banfield-Norris suggesting that people are gravitating toward polyamory because of sex.
Pinkett Smith said she was supportive of her daughter's decision to be polyamorous
"I was like, 'I totally get it,'" the 49-year-old actress said. "Wanting to set up your life in a way that you can have what it is that you want, I think that anything goes as long as the intentions are clear to everyone, more to yourself than anything."
The cohosts were also in agreement that whether a person practices monogamy or polyamory, it has to be a decision that they make for themselves.
"That's the only part about marriage today and monogamy today that I think is antiquated, that monogamy has to be your choice," Pinkett Smith said. "It can't be because I'm told I'm supposed to do it this way. That, my dear, is deeply antiquated and no longer works."
When asked to share her thoughts on marriage, Smith said she was primarily against it and said she would consider the union only if there was a common purpose.

''The history of marriage really irks me, just the history of marriage as a whole and what it has represented over the years for women in particular.
I feel like the only way that I would get married is, let's say me and my partner or partners wants to help people and we need to put our finances together to make that vision happen. That's the only way I could see myself getting married."
There has to be a purpose beyond, 'I think you're cute,'" ..
After speaking with guests on "Red Table Talk" who practice polyamory, Smith said: "I feel so excited and seen because I've been studying polyamory for a really long time, and I just want to show that there is so much here to be mined and to be uncovered."

From insider
*Most Nigerians are polyamorous by nature so nobody should come here and yarn dust oh....
I guess it runs in the family.
ReplyDeleteShe's been practising this since nah. I think she's inlove with a guy & a girl and is moving with the flow. In a few years time if one goes sour she may change her mind
DeleteI don't think I like over liberal parenting. I am somewhere in the middle. Kids need guide honestly. Before you know it bestiality will be normal to some
DeleteWhen I listened to them on "red table talk" I totally understood what they meant.
DeleteLike her mum said, don't force yourself into monogamy if you know it's not for you.
I know people who enjoy the thrill of new relationships, keeping them married will be boring and would be forcing them to keep to vows they don't want to.
However think it's this new generation that exposes us to a lot of absurd preferences.
My advice is, if you know you are like this, simply avoid getting married, why take vows you can't keep?
I also feel its take discipline to stay faithful,if you are someone who isn't disciplined it will be hard to stick to one person.
Find out what works for you
Anon 19:29 polyamory is not bisexuality. You're confusing the 2. Polyamory is being in love with/dating/marrying 2 or more people at same time. They could be Same gender. U know. Just like many Nigerian men are in love and or dating several women at once. They are polyamorous by nature or indiscipline
DeleteNdi woke people..............
DeleteIf it was a nigerian parent now, na deliverance them for carry her go..🤣🤣😅😅😅🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteThe only kid dat is normal is the one Will had with his first wife; thank God for that one. I like to be a friend to my kid dont get me wrong, but i dont like when a parent is too liberal.
DeleteEven if Willow says she wants to marry her dog 2mrw they will say its fine.
Abeg i like giving kids boundaries. Whatever works for dem sha dey are American, im an African mother.
Well can't really blame her. Her parents are in an open marriage so when u rubbish the institution of marriage, don't expect your kids to take it serious either
DeleteWell said B&R and Anonymous.
DeleteSo what is the difference between this and open relationship?
ReplyDeleteLol
ReplyDeleteWill Smith na who you offend??
...his first wife
DeleteChike it wasn't will Smith but his daughter Willow.
DeleteI got confused with the names.
He's asking becos most of his kids and even his wife have weird relationships.
DeleteOnly his 1st son from 1st marriage seems to be normal.
@Samurai and i really like his first wife, such a pretty lady and shes raising a well grounded young man....she also seems to have a good heart bcos shes still close to the family till date. Only a good woman can maintain good rltshp with an Ex plus even his wife/kids.
Anon 19:49,
DeleteAll his children have weird behavior, that's why I asked him who he offended...
Chike knows what he said.
DeleteWill Smith has a dysfunctional family.
His wife got entangled and his daughter has gone off the deep end. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
My dear oooo.....
ReplyDeleteThese Americans!!!
ReplyDeleteMany Nigerians are hypocrites. They do worse behind closed doors but would pretend.
ReplyDeleteBTW, the departure from God's standards of right and wrong is sad and not worth it in the long run.
Let Nigerian keep living their lives behind closed doors atleast they wont let our kids be seeing nonsense in the open. Let them not feel certain behaviours are normal pls.
DeleteB&R 👌👌
DeleteWell said B&R.
DeleteThe truth is the concept of monogamy is dying off.
ReplyDeleteIt hurts me to say this as I'm a Christian and celebrate and don't want to have sex around but with one person till I die.
The truth is people are discovering they don't find complete fulfillment in marriage like they thought they would. Even with willing, loving partners, it can get boring and the human desire for more creeps in.
If I was a man, I would never get married. As someone who's completely loyal and gives my all, there is no guarantee you'll get the same level of loyalty. The person can just wake up and say "I'm tired" and you'll discover all the sacrifices was for nothing.
That's because nothing external can give a human being complete fulfillment.
DeleteOnly Jesus can fulfill you. Yes only God can fulfill you.
DeleteSodom and gomorrah go de laugh 4 grave
ReplyDeleteI tell ya!
DeleteReprobate minds! DEPRAVED GENERATIONS❗
Lmao! The imagery is funny
DeleteMy own take is to follow your heart.
ReplyDeleteLive the life you desire, but don't let it affect your relationship between you and God or your fellow human.
Peace of mind matters to me.
Those practising that polyamory should come and share their experience.
How can you bring God into the mix when you encourage people to live the life they desire.
DeleteJames 4 v 4
You adulterous people! Don't you know IF YOU LOVE THE WORLD , YOU ARE GOD'S ENEMIES? And if you decide to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.😩😩
anon 21:51
Deleteyou must have a rotten brain if you don't understand what I mean by saying so ,you ask.
Very confused notion. Do what you like but don't offend God. Yet it is doing what you want that leads to sin that offends God.
DeleteAnonymous 19:47, ure just a confused thing. Don't bring God into this mess, go read you Bible. He created each of a particular sex in all His creation into existence.
DeleteHow can she admire and be inclined towards a healthy marriage, with how much her parents have redefined the sacred institution.
ReplyDeleteComedy family.
I don't bother with the show because I find it annoying. Many youths and people will take it up from the approval they think they are watching from their idols.
DeleteVery dysfunctional family
DeleteThe Smith family hian!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm on this table but the society won't let people like me be
ReplyDeleteWill seem to have a good head on his shoulders, what's happening to his children??
ReplyDeleteBig question. Very big question. I remember watching the Pursuit of Happiness then and he seemed he had it all figured out with parenthood.
DeleteNo difference between her stance and that of those that say ,do not put all your eggs in one basket while dating...NB...she isn't even interested in marriage as at now.
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget the married men and side chicks...or the married womb and side cocks...or even those who advise ladies offered favors like university school fees, to continue and use sense after all they have sex wit their boyfriends for nothing...
My comment is an extract from various comments dropped on this page by people in different chronicles
Mhmmm this family sef
ReplyDeleteMost Nigerians are polyamorous indeed....Humans are the same everywhere;even you!
ReplyDeleteAnd some are in polyamorous relationships without knowing. Their husbands or wives can't keep it in their pants
DeleteThis family heh! Pelee Will.
ReplyDeleteSwinging both ways.
ReplyDeletePromiscuity Promotion
ReplyDeletepeople will condemn this but stay with cheats or are cheating themselves
ReplyDeleteThis is not for me. The spiritual bond would not form. I need that spiritual connection.
ReplyDeleteNa them. The “do what you like so long as it makes you happy “ association. So many people are walking around with demons but they are not even aware. This generation dabbling into “meditation, spirituality and new age religion” have no idea the demonic forces they invite into their lives. These demons influence their choices and make them open to anything. You see straight people suddenly open to bisexuality and homosexuality. Straight monogamous people suddenly willing to try orgies, polyamory, etc. They are in constant search of fulfillment that comes only from God. They keep getting deeper into these pervasions until they develop anxiety, depression and become suicidal as a result of the demons they’ve invited into their homes. I pity anybody looking up to these people and thinking they are enlightened and “liberal”. I pity anyone trying to bend their beliefs in order to fit in and not be labelled “ too close minded”. Devil is working overtime in this generation, and the biggest deception is making people believe he does not exist, and that everything they do is fine so long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. Making them believe that everything they do is their idea, not knowing they are being manipulated in the spirit. The spirit realm is as real as the air we breathe. God’s standards will never change. God loves the sinner but hates the sin. Discipline the flesh, so that the spirit can rise. We are here only for a short time. Be wise
ReplyDeleteSpot on. Because Nigerians/Africans practice it doesnt make it right.
DeleteAnonymous God bless you richly. Permit me to copy and save your comment please. 💕❤️🖤 🤗
DeleteA million likes for this!!! Very apt!!!
DeleteThe world don kpeme finish, whether in America or Naija, people are getting increasingly polygamous abi polyamorous. I don't blame the girl, you are a product of your society and her environment from birth has been Hollywood. Plus, her parents are not Christians. But what about us, who were raised different, are we really monogamous? I think what people are doing now is serial monogamy, which is worse than polygamy. Serial monogamy - date one person, move to the next, just to move to another next, all sexual relationships. Leading to broken families, abstentee fathers, baby Mamas, single mothers and so on. Monogamy doesn't just mean one man, one wife. It doesn't begin from marriage. It really means, one human being, one sexual partner. And it begins from singleness. So true monogamy can only be attained when we stop fornication. So I no blame the girl. How can you say marriage is sacred and treat it anyhow, people getting in and out and sleeping with anyone?
ReplyDeleteHer environment is responsible for this
ReplyDeleteThis is me
ReplyDeleteI find commitment boring
I have been thinking of going for deliverance
I notice I never get contented, I just want to be with a new person after a while
So sad
It's well with you. Pick up the New Testament and start reading from Matthew, you'll be amazed at the change you will experience in your life.
