One Legged Hawker Mary Daniel Reportedly Lied About Being In An Accident And Being An Orphan + N25 Million Donation Siezed

Mary Daniel, the viral Oshodi amputee hawker who claimed that she lost a leg in an accident that killed all passengers, including her parents when she was a teenager, reportedly lied about her life story...

Daniel became a sensation weeks ago after pictures of her selling water at Oshodi emerged on social media and attracted sympathy from Nigerians across the world.

Daniel, in an interview, claimed she was an orphan with a baby and an aged grandmother to fend for.
She narrated how life dealt her several blows and she had to drop out of school and hit the streets to make ends meet.

Following her harrowing tales, Nigerians started donating money through her bank account made public with about N25m raised.

This prompted the state government to immediately shelter her to prevent criminals from taking advantage of her sudden fortune.

Just few days ago, a celebrity birthday party was held in her honour featuring many cakes, fanfare, photoshoots, among others.

All was going well for the young lady until the state government discovered on Thursday her father was alive.
It was also detected she was amputated from birth.

It was gathered Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu immediately handed her over to officials of the social welfare in the presence of the police and some Kogi leaders, who attested her father was alive and for investigation following revelations her case was staged.

Daniel was receiving strange calls from those who staged her story with threats to reveal the truth unless she gave them their share of the money, the nation learnt

Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu told The Nation the young woman was in the custody of officials of the Social Welfare and not the police as earlier reported.

“The police were there but she was not handed over to us. She was handed over to the Social Welfare. There were irregularities and lies in the account of her life she gave.
It was discovered that contrary to her claim that her parents died during an accident that left her amputated, her father is very much alive and that she was amputated from birth.

“It was also discovered that her presence in Oshodi was staged. Those working with her played on the intelligence of Nigerians to get donations for her.

It came to light when the people started threatening her. She promised some N500,000 others different amounts and was planning to return to her home state when the information leaked.

I had to attach some policemen to her to prevent any attack on her when she went to the bank. We suspected those people might follow her but everything went well as they were not seen.

“Presently, the state government is preventing her from accessing the money.
The government does not want a situation where it will become a trend for people to cook up stories, manipulate the people to get donations,” Odumosu explained.

*So who will INHERIT the money in her account? She lied about her story but she needs the money for a better life..
Is she worse than Nigeria's politicians? Nigeria is a nightmare for people like her so i don't blame her, it was wrong to lie but I don't blame her!!!

I feel so bad for my country, everybody trying to be lord over everybody. MARY DANIEL IS AN ORPHAN AND I KNOW HER FAMILY EVEN BEFORE HER STORY CAME OUT. I’m exhausted

  3. Well she lied and has probably closed the door for other people who genuinely need assistance. Returning the money to those who donated will be a herculean task, the money can be used to set up a business and accomodation for her instead of giving her the cash directly. The rest can be given to an orphanage.

Even if she lied, which is wrong it doesnt change the fact shes disabled and in need....in my opinion though i wish the money should be used to set her up in a business, good accomodation and furniture and wheelchair/health care while the rest is kept in a Trust becos too many ppl eyeing dat money, most of dese disable ppl belong to a syndicate dat brought them to Lagos.

Pick poor people that geniniuely need the money and pay their bills. The money should not be returned to her. This will serve as a warning to those who might want to follow her steps.
The state government should make anything that the money is used for transparent for all to see. That money should not enter voice mail.

The young woman was coaxed to lie by some racketeers who took advantage of her disability and poverty to fleece the public.
LET THE GOVERNMENT FISH THEM OUT and PROSECUTE THEM to deter others.

Then when i saw she has made over 24million and the photoshoot, i said to my friend that i have a feeling that this whole thing was preplanned, that maybe some people have being seeing her and thought to ask for her permission to take her pictures and share promising her she will get help as Nigerians are very compassionate people and i said its not a bad idea thou cause anyone and everyone in her situation actually needs help but i said they might be problem sharing the money realised cause people can be greedy and they will blow everything open .( this i said last week when her photoshoot pictures broke the internet).i just hope Nigerians wont stop helping those that truly needs the help cause there are millions of lessprevilage whom genuinely wants help... all i see here is greediness!!!! Stories like this just discourage people from helping

  27. In as much as I sympathize with her plight, fraud is fraud! Wether politicians are doing it or not does not justify her situation. So many people have cried for help through social media platforms and gotten help. She could have taken that route. Who knows what other tricks she must have been using in the past. This should serve as a deterrent to others thinking of doing same. She should not be given access to that money because she got it wrongfully. Find a way to give people back their money or better still, distribute it to genuine orphanages around the country.

  34. Stella, I sympathize with her condition, and other disabled like her. However, most people usually have a seemingly genuine reason for scamming people - disabled or otherwise. I believe she would have gotten sympathetic help, if she had come clean from the onset. She didn't even need to come to Lagos. Making a video from her home to explain her plight in an honest manner, could still have gotten people's attention. She may not have gotten up to what she got by scamming - but, at least, no one would be on her neck, asking for their share of the booty. How about that? She would have gotten enough to set her up in profitable business.

    ReplyDelete
  35. What's one legged ? Are there no better words to describe her situation. Nobody seized the donated money. The governor of Lagos do not have the powers to seize any money deposited in the bank. Only the central bank through a legally granted order of a high court judge can do so. The central bank did not freeze her account. This post is simply speculative with the aim tarnishing the young lady

  40. whoever did the investigation should come out and give an interview. we will like to hear from the girl and her father too. let him tell us what actually happened. you cannot just come out with such a weighty allegation without linking the facts to someone...all this report is saying is it was gathered. gathered by who? when they interview the parties concerned it will give credibility to the story...we live in a society where so many things are wrong and systems/processes are corrupt. if we now truly ascertain she lied then the monies realized for her should be channeled elsewhere and support other charities. she can be given a small percentage too as punishment. after all she is truly disabled and needs assistance
