LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT
HEALTH FACILITY MONITORING AND ACCREDITATION AGENCY, HEFAMAA

PRESS RELEASE

PEJU UGBOMA: LAGOS SHUTS DOWN PREMIER SPECIALIST MEDICAL CENTER’S ICU.

……… Says Investigation ongoing.

The Lagos State Government through its Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, HEFAMAA has shut down the Intensive Care Unit, ICU of Premier Specialist Medical Center temporarily.

The Executive Secretary of the Agency, Dr. Abiola Idowu who stated this today at the end of a review meeting on the case of late Mrs. Peju Ugboma, held at HEFAMAA’s office in Alausa, Ikeja disclosed that the Agency took the crucial decision in furtherance of public protection pending the outcome of the ongoing investigations by the Agency.

She added that the Agency has informed the hospital to ensure that its staff follow the protocols established at the various units and also delegate responsibilities appropriately to facilitate prompt implementation of necessary actions.

While answering questions on the closure of the ICU, Idowu explained that the facility is a registered specialist hospital in Lagos and the investigations conducted thus far revealed that the hospital generally appeared to have adequate equipment and personnel. “However, the facility needs to improve on its coordination,” she stated.

She further stated that the Agency has inspected the hospital twice, met with the family of the late Mrs. Ugboma and has also commenced an investigation on Evercare Hospital, Lekki where the deceased was subsequently referred.

She added that the investigation into the matter is ongoing until the facts are established after which the final report will be forwarded to the Honourable Commissioner for Health for appropriate actions.

    4. Oh yes you are Right, it was a Mymectomy a Fibroid Surgery. This is the most beautiful news since yesterday. My husband, sister and I especiqlly me pleaded with Peju to come to the United Kingdom and get her surgery done, she kept telling me that the Premier hospital in Victoria Island was top notch and she wanted to quickly start her work as soon as possible after her surgery rather than staying a month or so after surgery in the UK to be set to be able to fly back to Nigeria, Ohh. I kept begging her because I knew they will not have enough blood and frozen plasma for a a big fibroid surgery in Nigeria but they will always claim they have and they could do an improper stitches that could get the anus stuck to the intestines and cause a bloat or distended tummy which kills most ladies after fibroid surgery in Nigeria,I lost a cousin Nne who was a top Assistant director at ACTION AID Nigeria in 2011 at Nigeria's National hospital who had all the money to have a surgery here in the UK but the same talk from doctors in Nigeria that they should get it done fast in Nigeria and start work fast than getting it done overseas and having to wait the Airline time of 1 month before flying. peju and hubby they have a close friend, our friend who is a top consultant with NHS here but she said to me she had now paid premier. hmmm.. our Peju! Ahh! Chaii! Fibroid surgery, once you cut the fibroid, it is blood all over and you must have the perfect screened blood in tons to save the patient, the stitching is crucial and Nigeria still does the ugly thread stitches you see on some Nigerian women tummies and they sometimes stitch the anus unknowingly but here in the UK it is unseen water stitches that you can NEVER see again Rest in peace Sis. We Missss you bunches.

    5. God help us. This same Premier hospital again. That's how when I used to have ovarian cysts, one fledgling Male surgeon there was so eager to get me under the knife and cut me open the very next day! That to me was just too soon. Thanks to the intervention of another close senior doctor I was advised to hold off. The Thing is many of these newcomer surgeons with little experience are so eager to get that experience and quota under their belt. N I don't think they undergo enough thorough training before hand. Or they don't have enough patience or means to pay proper attention and meticulously ensure due diligence is done. Something in my spirit didn't agree with the guy n the way he was doing.

Please watch the nature and manner of the person that is supposed to be operating you. Are they clean? Do they pay attention to detail? U have every right to change ur mind n say no if they don't make u feel like u will be in safe hands. He looked so careless, jittery and jumpy n not meticulous the way a surgeon should be to put your mind at rest. I sought other means to shrink the cysts naturally abeg. May this woman's soul rest in peace.

    6. So sorry dear anon, her story is really sad.
I was appalled with the way those evil doctors kept demanding money from her husband. What a sad story!!

If they paid a little attention to details, they would have acted fast and saved her but No, it is just about money for them.

    12. 13.08, good thing you said UK. Would you say you are not aware of families NHS has had to pay compensation to due to negligence? Talking as if UK is heaven where everything goes perfectly. Nonsense

    13. Unless she was meant to do it in a private hospital because at the moment, seeing doctors is like looking for diamond. A friend had to travel to Nigeria in March to get her fibroid done. I've been in severe pain due to effect from long-term dislocation which has been affecting my hip and just got progress today for an xray. It's sad this lady has to loose her life. I think the medical standard in Nigeria need a lot of upgrading as doctors seem to be more interested in making money than keeping to the oath they took. My sister died due to negligence. There are good doctors back home but the greed and heartlessness they display is the problem.

  6. Premier hospital? U mean this same jokers that their surgeons wanna rush n use 30 minutes to finish a surgery that should be slated for 3 hours at least? Isn't that how they killed another lady during fibroid removal surgery last time. Forget healthcare in Nigeria because Ur leaders already have! Can u find any member of FG going to premier for surgery??? So they too no wan die na.

When u watch Greys Anatomy or any emergency room documentary u hear of surgeons so dedicated to their craft that they wear diapers and stand for hours operating on someone to ensure that no stone is unturned. But no. Naija surgeons wanna rush the surgery so they return home in time to eat their amala, gbegiri, watch football, drink beer and romance their mistresses.Either they don't close sth up well or they forget sth in someone's body. Msxhewwwwwwwwww. R.I.P o ma se o.

    2. Take pains to ask why the same doctors do well in the UK or USA but not here. Have you ever wondered? Losing a life can be overwhelming to the extent you can say anything at the height of pain to get some form of response. I have gone through the mills. Don't be surprised if the hospital release their own report, you may change your opinion. God bless all health workers who maximize the satanic environment they practice in. When there is effective insurance for all, doctors and nurses and other health workers will be waiting for you once they get a call that you are on your way. Study the western world and find out why they are more effective

  10. The Nigeria health sector needs so much improvement. Premier hospital didn't try at all. But please let us not generalize it,we still have good hospitals and experienced doctors in Nigeria. The anonymous saying you told the lady to come to the UK. I'm sure some people have complications abroad too. We have heard stories of Nigerian dying abroad. I have gone under the knife 4 times here in Nigeria, the first Myomectomy that took about 5 hours. I have needed had need for blood. Please don't put fear in the heart of women that can't afford to travel out for surgery. Thank you.

    1. I know someone that went for tooth extraction in the US and had stroke as a complication, he came back with a walking stick meanwhile he was working in a top notch hospital that have never recorded such. Not all hospital are slaughter slabs and people still survive in their thousands after myomectomy surgery. I also nurses a lady that had c/s and myomectomy at the same time and she survived!!! Infact the fibroids she had received weighed more than her baby and she only got two pints of blood and was discharged in five days.
We have some really good Drs in the country.

    2. They do! I know personally of a few horror stories with UK medical services. And wasn't it the same UK poaching Nigerian doctors some months back. Yes, there are success stories too, but making it appear as though nothing ever goes wrong there is disingenuous. Also, all my cousins who had babies in the US had problems in the hospital. Now, they are talking about the high levels of mortality for Black mothers and the deep racism in the healthcare industry in the US. These places have problems in their healthcare industry that could be lethal.

Anyhow, the full details of what took place will surely be released eventually. So I wait to learn how this woman lost her life.

      Delete
    3. Anon 17:31 you are right about the mortality rate for black mothers, I read the report inline. Scary stuff. I know two ladies that travelled to US to give birth and lost the babies. I remember that actress that lost her life either in US or Canada after giving birth.
Americans complain bitterly about the state of their healthcare system that we are here praising, google serious news articles about it.
Medical tourism is a thing Americans practice as well.
Healthcare generally is becoming incredibly expensive while standards are dropping

  12. Good move by the authorities.

Everyone in this country should just be prayerful because hmmmmm... talk plenty.

Is it not the same people whose parents pay for jamb and then they sort their ways through the university that will do the surgery?? Majority are unqualified, unmotivated, lack empathy, don't want to be a doctor but they are there to please their parents who have spent so much etc.. and that is the problem.

Just pray that should the need arise, let the most competent and qualified personnel be on duty that day. We will not be unfortunate in Jesus name.

    1. Oh Wendix,

You're right in the the part you said "Is it not the same people whose parents pay for jamb and then they sort their ways through the university that will do the surgery?? Just pray that should the need arise, let the qualified dedicated one attend to us"

The rich pay heavily to get their wards admitted to MBBS MEDICINE AND SURGETY.
Yet most of them will quickly travel for treatment abroad instead of patronising their "dokitas"

My pikin na doctor is all what some of them want to chant to relatives and friends.
      It's a pity.

  13. Anon 1308 it's people like you that paint the country very bad. Just look at the way you ran down Nigerian hospitals!!! Yes premier hospital didn't try at all and we're very careless and honestly im shocked at the exorbitant amount they even charged. I work in a hospital and in fact we charge as low as 150k or 200 k at most for the same surgery and even combine it with caesarian section and hardly transfuse especially if the patient was able to build her blood volume very well. Which fibroid are you talking about that bleeds like crazy when it's cut?? That you are in UK doesn't mean that Nigeria doesn't have good and experienced Drs ok??
80% of the myomectomies we do, don't need transfusion and they recover very welll. In the past three years we haven't called recorded any death case with myomectomy. So please stay in your UK but don't run us down.
This lady didn't deserve the treatment she got and lots of Nigerians like hospitals with names and charges high, most times that professional care might not be available.Do your underground work concerning a hospital before submitting your self for a procedure to. Some of the average ones you despise might just be the best. It's well. This will serve as a deterrent to lots of hospitals that practice rubbish and unfortunately this lovely woman is gone!!! My thoughts with her family.

  14. Every surgery comes with a risk. No matter how routine and how often the surgery has been done there is always the chance that something could go wrong. Our bodies were not made to be cut open, but this is where medicine is today and surgery is needed because it is all that is known to treat certain ailments.

This is very sad news for her family. Tomorrow is never a guarantee for none of us. All is by His grace. Condolences to those grieving her loss and may her soul RIP.

  15. Let's wait to hear from the investigation team. Truthfully, there is no surgery without possible complications. Complications could be immediate, early or late.
Even,in cases where good practitioners handles such procedures, complications can occur.i read on a medical WhatsApp group that the lady had 2 previous CS and 1 previous myomectomy in the past(that's the gynae history of the patient). Also,a drain was placed in her after surgery and wasn't active before it was removed. If that was the case, the cause of death was not due to haemorrhage. In a patient that had such gyne history and based on the location and size of the fibroid, it isn't just like any myomectomy. I read problem started after she was transfused blood, which looks more like a case of DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy.it was alleged that it an hysterectomy that was done and not myomectomy. Let's not be in haste to rubbish Nigerian doctors and facilities. Let appropriate investigation be done.May the gentle soul of the deceased continuously rest in peace Amen.
Again family, not everyone with uterine fibroid needs a surgery unless there is an indication and the fibroid is symptomatic.
