Saturday In House Gists - Public Schools Versus Private Schools In Nigeria And The Costs...

Which private Primary and Secondary schools are the best In Nigeria? And what are the costs? I heard a school in Lagos charges as much as N500k per term for one Student..... (don't faint, some can afford it)

Some other schools are expensive as well and by the time your child is graduating, he/she will be doing so with an American or British accent...

Foreign trips are included in some of the packages and I hear some Teachers are paid up to N300k in private schools and not up to 50k in public schools.

What Schools do your kids attend and how much is the school fees? How much do public primary and secondary schools cost and why are people not sending their children there?

Despite the costs, do you prefer private schools to public schools?

Lets gist!

  3. Stella, I am currently paying above 500k per term for my child. Many schools pay above that. That's not the point however.
I am proud to say I attended a public school. I was well groomed and taught. Sadly, my children cannot attend the these schools today? It is shameful that the government does not realise the importance of maintaining quality education and infrastructure for learning, in a country with one of the highest youth population.
Teachers in public schools were better trained, with background in Education. A lot of private schools do not have qualified teachers. They assume that having a degree means you are capable of teaching.
It is not about speaking with foreign accents. We want children to develop with confidence to face the world. Schooling is not about cramming things. It is also the extra curricular, the communication and so on.
Some public schools I visited had 96 students in a class! Imagine that! How can the teachers cope? No labs, dilapidated buildings etc.
Some old student associations do more for the school than the government.
I am passionate about this topic. Imagine if we were serious in this country... like the west, where the standard of education has improved over the years. #deepsigh

    1. I saw a video on IG this morning where both teachers and students of a public school were singing that popular lewd music (shedibalabala) and I shook my head in disappointment.

    2. If you didn't see the camera crew, then the one you saw was edited. That was a movie mbok. I don't think our educational system has deteriorated that low.

  7. I prefer private because of extra activities like swimming, coding, scrabble, basketball etc. I guess most parents want to do better than they had for their kids and believe they can't get that in public schools despite costs

  8. Public schools are not under any pressure to deliver so they are relaxed. Most parents can't afford fee paying schools so their wards ended up in public schools.

Private schools on the other hand are mostly staffed with unqualified teachers. But with parents & proprietors breathing down thier necks, they are forced to deliver.

That's just the basics between public and private schools in Nigeria.

  9. For primary education, I'll go with private school. A good one that is.
But secondary school, public because the standard of some public schools has greatly improved. Here in Delta state tho.
Not that the private school teachers don't work, cos I taught in a private school, the students are not just willing to learn because they already know they will pass any exam and you see the attitude rubbing off on even the serious ones.
There's small struggle to learn in public schools. Federal govt college and the likes

  10. my kids boarding school is 5m per annum its outside lagos with top facilities ...you can pay in instalments but I think education is top priority for me so if one can afford it instead of bone straight and range rover I will pay any amount for solid education

  11. Why most parents don't send their kids to public schools in Nigeria is because most of their teachers are not versatile, they are not going to trainings or trying to better the standard of education on the public schools, they hardly do anything computerized.i doubt they can even use the projector or something to catch the pupils attention (no offense to public school teachers here). while private schools get more kids. Because it's technology inclined, the teachers are versatile, they train, learn, go out to better themselves so they can get paid and also referred to other schools. Parents don't mind the high price in school fees, as long as they get the value and more of what they are paying.

  12. Lol... 500k is small now, St Saviours School Ikoyi is almost up to 1.5million per term now.
Their admission acceptance fee alone was close to 3.5 million per student.
The standard is good but tuition would have been free if we were in Canada oh.
Oga no gree. Tired of this country still.

  16. Na wah. I have 2 children. Currently paying 3.2m annually for each of them in a very good private boarding school in Ogun state. I love the school. High standards and they focus on everything not just academics. Olympic sized swimming pool, wonderful track and world class tennis court. Great amphi theatre. My first wants to do theatre arts and my second history and strategic studies. I think the school is preparing them well.

  17. I really do laugh though but in all i have come to realize that both the private and public products will meet at a point, even the if you paid billions in school fees in the end a public system product might be the employer.
