Dr Freaks Journal - Choosing A Church

I was born into an Anglican family but I "ported" permanently in 1996.

2004:

When I met and started dating my wife, I was not a "church goer" but she was, having been born into a staunch Catholic home, baptized and confirmed, she was/is entitled to partake of the Holy Communion. I was informed at an early age and I verily believed that the afore-mentioned "special ones" are called "Communicants".

Do not blame me as I did not stay long enough in the Anglican Church to get "confirmed" like my older siblings.

Throughout our school days (my wife and I), she never missed what I came to know as "Mass".
She has always loved God.

I was not a pagan in the real sense of it as my friend and flatmate -T.R.A ( who was a liberal practising moslem) and I (a very liberal practising Moslem) and a host of others never failed to attend the "Cross-Over" Mass at St Albert, University of Benin way back.

Lest I forget, my Igbo friends (they've always been my closest friends from cradle any ways) hinted me that in Igboland, a woman does not really have a religion as she is expected to join the husband in his own form of worship.

Yoruba land, it is slightly different as a Christian woman can marry a Moslem man and still continue with her faith. After all, my Sister did it. Anyway, she made a request before we got married and I graciously granted same. She sought to get married in the Catholic Church and her request was granted automatically.
We ultimately got wedded at the Catholic Church in Lagos on 5 July 2008.

After our wedding, she followed me to an Anglican church once and I (we) stopped going to church for another five (5) months after that encounter. She kept on worrying me and my then landlord who is like a father to me till today, (the most liberal Moslem I've ever met) became worried about my not going to church and he mandated me to find a church and start worshipping God.

 I complied almost immediately.

One Sunday morning, my wife and and I and our first child got in the car and started "scouting" for a church around Ikorodu where I was residing at the time until the Holy Spirit led us to a church where the Senior Pastor made us feel loved, nurtured us and that was where we both got bitten by the bug of Pentecostalism fully and finally, till date.

You may then ask, why all this epistle?

whenever I was out of town, my wife never failed to attend Mass in the closest Catholic church in her neighbourhood, together with "her children". I must also add that all the children got baptized in the Catholic church. It was easy for her to so do for two reasons:

1. I think I'm liberal when it comes to religion and denominations/sects;

2. I did not witness the baptism of any of the children and did not even get to see two (2) of them until they had clocked three (3) months or above. I think I saw only one for the first time when she was one (1) month old. (Don't ask me why. Na so we see am).

There came a time when our first child had to proceed to the secondary school and naturally, a Catholic school came to mind. It came handy because I'm a product of Mission schools, both primary and secondary and I swore that I was going to subject my children to same. Guess what, the first time the boy came back home from school, he was still boasting that he was a Pentecostal and can never be a Catholic!

This same boy, the last time he came around, he was asking me if he could go for "cathecism" and "confirmation" so that he could start receiving the Holy Communion! "Won ti get e!" Can you imagine, son of "Ifa!"

Holy Communion in a Catholic church!

Before I could say Jack Robinson, he had taught the younger ones how to say the Rosary, in my house! My wife had even bought Rosaries for them all and they wear their Rosaries 24/7 now. They can now say the Rosary and do the sign of the cross!

What can I do? If they've chosen to become Catholics, I can only give them my blessing and wish them well. After all, we all call on the same God and I also absconded from the faith of my father. What goes around comes around. Innit?

I've always said it that these women have a way "cornering" their children. While all of this was going on, wifey never uttered a word! Her facial expression never betrayed her emotion. Women!

And I'm sure she and other Catholics reading this peace are happy. That is how she would encourage them to marry women from her place! Chai!

In any event, the deal is that for as long as they live under my roof, they will be attending my Pentecostal church with me. When they turn 18, then they can opt for their newfound faith. They have all become Catholics now. It is well.

Please note that this is a work of art. The writer is one of the most liberal creatures ever created by God, and he has nothing against any religion, sect or tribe. No stereotypes. No prejudices. For we are one before God, our creator.

  1. Catholics hardly stop being catholics. Even when they change to other churches after marriage, they must find time to pray the rosary.

One of my aunties married a pentecostal man, today He is a catholic.

  2. I have mixed feelings reading this post. It says you dont really care about religion, even your wife too. But at least she.trued steering them.towards that which she knows. My father taught us the bible while growing up. So we all stuck to.what he believed in

    1. @ Adaugo :::Why should he care about religion when that is o e of the world’s and Nigeria’s greatest problem today. Seek your God and creator anyhow and where you want to but ultimately treat and love your neighbors as you love yourself.

  5. You are right when you said your wife and other Catholics are happy reading this. Hehehehe...

I as a staunch Catholic will find it extremely difficult changing my denomination though I can join them in prayers.

  6. This is the problem with Christianity. One denomination feels Superior to the other. This is one thing I like about Muslims. They can enter any mosque to pray and nobody is saying anything about denomination. I think Christians should take a cue from them. We are not even one in chirst .It's really bad!
Imagine Mr kunle saying he instructed them to attend his church till they turn 18 before they can attend a Catholic church. Is the Catholic church their mum attends not a church! I just tire for Christians.

  7. I'm proudly catholic but married to an Anglican. We had a Catholic wedding .I attend Anglican some Sundays and mass other Sundays. My husband is a very liberal person.
Our daughter was baptized in the Anglican church, that's non-negotiable with my husband. As long as the Trinity is recognized in the church I'm good with it.

  12. Nice one Mr Kunle.
I was born in an Anglican family. I was baptized and also confirmed there. In the course of my journey in life,I joined Christ Embassy,I was even baptized there, cos they said they don't recognised infant baptism. I was a strong member there but my only problem was the speaking in tongues thing..I just couldn't.My friends were faking it but I just couldn't and I felt odd. I went back to my Anglican but because of mobility I had to join a Redeem church close to my house. I enjoy everything, their show of love and care for members. When I stopped attending Anglican, nobody missed me but in Redeem if I didn't come to church for one day..ha! they'll come or call.
Your wife tried,it shows that women run the home.

    1. Same with my RCCG parish. If you’re not around, someone will call to ask if you’re fine.
Our head pastor tries his best to call members on their birthdays too especially if you’re active in church and it’s not a small parish.
I was also born, baptised and confirmed in the Anglican Church but somehow ported along the way.
Sometimes I miss the solemnity of their services though. Lol

Mr Kunle, you say your wife will soon encourage them to marry women from her place? Lol
You also married from her place you know so you’re the one who set that example for the children.

I couldn't comprehend how she enjoyed the service for the 2hrs or so we were there. There was no close church to our hostel then ,so I wanted to start following her to church. After that service ,I siddon for house o. Better to count ceilings than endured 2 hrs of boredom.

    1. This life no balance . One is up there lamenting that she is tired of attending an Anglican Church, you are here wishing to go back to your Anglican faith . Why can't you just go to where your heart belongs? Talk to your husband about it ,he might see reasons with you. I was born an Anglican and my mum is still a member till date but I don japa.
Don't even think I desire to go back there especially whatour eyes saw during my dad's burial in the Anglican Church . Bringing up issues of dues, things to buy for the church and to the pastors publicly asking for money. Abegee!
