Saturday In House Gists - Myths About New Born Babies....

There are a lot of Myths concerning new born babies and I would like us to discuss them... Note that these myths are in the minds of some Nigerians and not all......

Examples of these myths are..

- Some Nigerians believe that you should not take your child out until 3 months
after birth.

- Some believe Exclusive is better than formula and make Mothers who dont have milk feel as if the World will end if they dont breastfeed their babies.

- Some believe that you should not show your child mirror if not he or she will not grow teeth

- Some believe that if you promise the child gifts ,it will make them walk faster..

- Some believe the water used to bath the baby should be thrown away gently..

-Some believe that you should not carry the child from behind

- Some believe that a Childs milk teeth should not be counted otherwise the child will stop growing teeth

-Some believe that Putting thread on the child's head stops hiccups.

Do ou believe in any of these myths? Do you know more? Which ones are true and which ones did you try out that worked?

    1. Number 2 is not a myth

      Delete
    2. Number 2 is not a myth, every other thing on the list is a myth except the breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding is best for the baby, it has all the good benefits packaged in each tiny fluid. However, those who cannot breastfeed for whatever reason should not be made to feel inadequate, infant formula will surfice.

      Delete
    3. Exclusive breastfeeding IS NOT a myth. The benefits are outstanding and am not just talking theory. My kids were exclusively breastfed and I can confidently tell you, they were bigger and healthier with minimal respiratory and digestive issues.
Some of these other myths shouldn't be interpreted directly but are rather cautionary 'guides'. For e.g... Not showing the child a mirror, prevents fixation on certain attributes or characteristic. Same as the Myth on the bath water and Gifts making the child walk... emphasizing the need for encouragement.
      Some though....hmmmm

  2. Yes, the myths are there.
But life has a manual from the creator and it is called the Bible.
You choose what to live by; myths or the Bible?
Let's see some of the things the Lord says about children.
Psalms 127:3Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.
4Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are children born in one’s youth. 5Blessed is
the man whose quiver is full of them. He will not be put to shame when he confronts the enemies at the gate.

Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

For me, I have chosen to live by God's Word.
Hoping to paste more under this comment for those who are interested.
    Cheers.

  4. For me,i don't carry my children out to my business place until 3 months because i want his or her neck to be strong enough because some people can annoy you the way they handle things.Secondly,at least after healing properly and after dedication.I believe in almost all the items though.

    1. It's not oo. What about the children who were not opportuned to suck breast. Formula contains whatever breast milk contains. Na pikin wey breast milk dey bellefull you go do exclusive for. As for my kids, once they complete one month, Na plenty cry after breast milk till I feed formula. They are very intelligent and healthy as well. Once they are 3 months, watery Pao and milk to the rescue.

      Delete
    2. Anon 16:57 you are wrong, that’s why people buy donor milk for their babies rather than buy them infant formula. Formula can never be compared to milk from a lactating woman. Don’t deceive yourself and convince innocent people to believe what isn’t true.

      Delete
    3. Exclusive is best! Infant formula is formulated to mimick the breastmilk, however its not the same). It is only next best and is fine if the child can't have breastmilk.

      Delete
    4. So people wo do not lactate enough should kill themselves? Mtchew

    5. Blackberry, have you ever heard of donor milk? Or don’t they sell donor milk in Nigeria? (Asking out of curiosity)

      Delete
    6. They don’t sell donor milk. You people shouting breast milk only. My son was a very hungry baby I had to do both bottle and breast he can suck somebody dry o. He was a very chunky baby too

      Delete
    7. Donor milk in Nigeria? Who will buy?
Before you give your pickin "whinch" milk. Lol

      Delete
    8. Even if you use formula , it's doesn't make you less of a mother but just know that exclusive is still the best ....

      Delete
    9. Who will buy it? Donor milk that you dunno if the donor has HIV. Abegi give ur babies bottle n d little breastmilk u can produce.

      Delete
    10. I don't want why you lots get angry with the truth.
Anon 20:42, nobody is shouting here, Google is your friend, at least learn!!
Nobody is saying you shouldn't give your baby infant formula if need be. I stated doing half and half infant formula and breastmilk for my daughter at around 5 months too because I couldn't be at home all day to keep up with the frequent nursing and she did just fine.
It doesn't change the fact that breast milk is still best. You can argue all you want, fact won't change.
BB, reason your comment again, I don't know what that hissing is about.

    11. Well said Dainty T. Even doctors advise mothers to breastfeed

      Delete
    12. @Dainty T... No need to argue. Am a Dr and it is evidence based.. Done of the healthiest babies I've seen were exclusively breastfed fed. Funny enough, they even appear bigger. My kids were exclusively breastfed and it's similar testimony. Synthetic formulas can NEVER be better than the natural.

Year's ago when I was jobhunting, I went to my housefellowship and the children prayed for me while I knelt. I wasn't expecting any job, but the next morning which was Monday I got called for an interview and immediately got the job. So I believe this one ๐Ÿ’ฏ but your intention has to be pure. And I also know some persons who had been TTCing and took in when they joined their church children's section.

  14. Each time my aunt gives birth, she plays music on her phone and places it very close to her baby's ear for about 15 minutes. When I ask, she will always say she wants her babies to get used to sounds and noises, so that they won't have an attack (convulsion) caused by unnecessary noise.
Sometimes I feel for because I think she's unknowngly causing more harm than good to those infants. I may be wrong though.

    1. It's been scientifically proven that exposing babies to music increases their capacity to form more neural connections in the brain, this enhancing their propensity for intelligence. It should be started around mid pregnancy.it's very beneficial .

  18. It is believed in my place that no visitor or outsider should be allowed to carry a new born baby until the cord on the baby's navel has fallen off.
Do you know the reason, very stupid reason. That if someone who once had a stillbirth or had a baby and the baby died,if such a person carries the new born, the baby may die or all such tales.

The funniest is the one where once a child that's crawling or learning to walk puts his or her head in a bended way in between their legs, onlookers will tell you that that child is looking at his/her siblings and that you should start getting set

    1. At your second paragraph...it's believed here though I didn't really believe in it.
Ironically, the very day I went for PT test for this my new baby, as soon as I came back, I noticed that my second child was in that position...lol. my mind just flashed to that myth and I was like woow.

The one of using thread for hiccups I still do it and it works.

      Delete
    2. The first is not true literally, however, on a closer look, the advice is a good one. The first few days, the baby's immune system is not at its best yet and so are prone to catching an infection (especially a respiratory tract infection) from close contact with people. So it makes sense, I'm sure a lot of children used to die in infancy from these infections back in the days when medicine was not this developed and because they didn't know better, that was the best explanation they could come up with. With the advent of early vaccination and all that, there has been a drastic reduction in infantile death.

  24. So a lot of myths were culled out in the past, some true and some not true. Science has proven a lot of them are not.
However, there are some that make sense and are set to protect or prevent some complications. An example is the myth that a child must not fall from one's back else they will be impotent in future; we all know this is to ensure anyone carrying a child is very careful when doing so. A child falling from that height could result in a lot, from temporary to permanent disabilities and even death.
Those like using a piece of cotton for hiccup, not counting teeth(this one is probably for parents not to develop unnecessary anxiety as we know children grow out their teeth at different paces) etc are mere myths.

    1. Ok. Am impressed with your reasoning and knowledge. You're right. Interpreting these myths directly, like I said earlier, will only cause confusion. Ancient Africans were usuallyusually pragmatic in their approach.

      Delete
  25. Some of these beliefs have factual basis. But the basis may not apply for all children. Science and better healthcare have also removed the basis of some of the beliefs so we now call all myths.

It is believed that very young babies can quickly sense the presence of spiritual beings, especially unpleasant ones, and signal this by continuing crying until the being leaves or the babies are removed from that place.

Children and potent prayers - this appears to be true. A comedian said his breakthrough came after a free show at a church and prayers by the children he performed for. A prominent Pastor in Nigeria always gives the testimony of a child who laid hands (as he preached as a much younger pastor in church) and a woman having serious insomnia and brain challenges was relieved.

There are more I have heard.

  26. I tried the last one when my baby was small and it worked for hiccups.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Some believe that the water used in bathing the baby should be thrown on the ground outside in the open and not in the toilet or bathroom to prevent the baby from having body odour when grown

Some believe a child must not fall from its mother's back to prevent being widowed seven times

Some believe if you served the right breast first to a newborn at birth, you must serve that same right breast first to all its siblings at birth so that they will be United

Some believe you must not cry while holding your baby and allow your tears to drop on your new born baby, it is a taboo

If I remember more I will drop them.
