High Profile Nigerians Named In Pandora Papers Leak

In what is dubbed the unearthing of a jackpot of secret files, the Pandora Papers leak has made revelations about prominent Nigerians including a former bank chief, Peter Obi.

The ex-Anambra Governor was indicted alongside a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), an ex-serving governor, lawmakers, business moguls, a pastor, among others.

In the major scandal, the influential citizens were accused of flouting “extant laws and legislations as they hid assets”.

The Pandora Papers investigation involved 600 journalists from the media including The Washington Post, the BBC, The Guardian, and Nigeria’s Premium Times.

The report is based on the leak of nearly 12 million documents from 14 financial service firms across the globe.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which published the papers, said they contain 336 leaders of countries, government officials, politicians and tycoons.

The content revealed how the Nigerians established set up shell companies and sometimes warehouse huge financial assets, in notorious secrecy jurisdictions.

The first series published on Monday showed that Peter Obi allegedly kept secret assets he did not declare to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) before assuming office as governor.

Premium Times reports that in 2010, more than four years after Obi took a seat of power, he allegedly set up a discreet company in the British Virgin Island, and named it Gabriella Investments Limited, after his daughter.

Obi allegedly contracted Acces International, a secrecy enabler in Monaco, France, to help him incorporate an offshore entity.

Obi also allegedly paid Acces International to provide nominee directors for the company. These residents of tax havens were “paid” to sit on boards of companies to hide the identities of the real owners.

Access International then headed to the British Virgin Island where they contracted a local registered agent – Aleman Cordero Galindo & Lee Trust (BVI) Limited (Alcogal) to set up Gabriella Investments Limited for Obi.

“I don’t declare what is owned with others. If my family owns something I won’t declare it. I didn’t declare anything I jointly owed with anyone”, Obi told Premium Times.

The publishers of the Pandora Papers will release details of other Nigerians mentioned in the coming days.

    3. I am the anonymous, and I did not shout. I wrote in normal case letters. And what I wrote was from the list I saw here in the USA as at the time of posting. I stand by my comment then, as the list did not have Peter Obi /Gabriella on it. Obviously, they are releasing it in batches. when we see, then we acknowledge. But as at the time I checked, I did not see Peter Obi name or any Gabriella something on it. So, hold your horses and chill. Its like you are jubilating and dancing! Is it a thing to celebrate who is on there or not? I don't think so. It is not a new thing that high net-worth people (good and bad ones) have always used tax havens to store most of their wealth, to avoid taxes, this is what they do, all over the world. Regardless of how they got their wealth, which is another topic. So unless this "leaked papers" gives an insight into the origins of any ill-gotten wealth, I really don't see the essence or how it will benefit me and you, except to abuse people.

    4. As far as Nigerians on the list are concerned, this is all about HOW they got the wealth being stored in tax havens, and even more importantly in Mr Obi's case if the accumulation of that wealth is linked to his political positions. An individual cannot be advocating change while living a corrupt life in the shadows. That is the starting point. So, you may not see the essence of exposés like these, but many others do.
