Bus Driver Sets Self Ablaze To Protest After LASTMA Seized His Bus

A commercial vehicle driver, yesterday, set himself ablaze in Ajao Estate area of Lagos, to protest seizure of his bus by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.

Eyewitnesses said the driver whose identity could not be immediately ascertained was arrested for alleged traffic offence.

Two LASTMA officials were said to have dragged him out of the vehicle and started the ignition for onward movement to their base at Oshodi.
As they were about moving, the driver, according to eyewitnesses, poured fuel on his body and struck a stick of matches.

While efforts was on to put out the fire, other commercial bus drivers and conductors, including passers-by, started hauling stones at the LASTMA officials, a development that degenerated into a fight between the officials and hoodlums.

Fear stricken drivers, according to one of the eye witnesses, who identified himself as Tajudeen Onipekun, hurriedly made u-turn to avoid escalating the fire.
Onipekun said: “The LASTMA officials were attacked because they never cared about the victim that was on fire. Rather, they were more interested on moving the vehicle away. The driver was eventually rushed to the hospital. Other drivers around said the victim lost his job last year and just got the commercial bus last November.”

  1. Oh dear!
Frustration made him do that. He may be in debts already and of that bus gets to Lastma office, they will charge him at least 50k to get the bus out. So sad

    4. Pls leave all that sentiment. If everybody is left to break traffic rules, do u know how may lives can be lost for it? If he knows he's in a difficult place, why not move cautiously while trying to amend things? Why aggravate his situation?

    5. ...in addition to what I just said up there, traffic authorities shd also strive to be fair in their dealings, with offenders. At times offenders make genuine mistakes.

I hope he finds rest in the great beyond.

  10. Poor driver with vehicle on hire purchase, fuel scarcity with 'increased' price, touts daily fee, other incurred debts, many dependents etc with little or no means of meeting up, what does one expect. The frustration is on the increase daily and the rate of inflation is something else these days.

  11. This same act set off the Arab Spring in Tunisia. When someone is so exasperated, frustrated and feels completely powerless that self-immolation is the only option they see as viable, then you know the oppression is too much. If Nigerians weren't so numb, abused and distracted, this would be bigger news

  15. This is not the true story. It is the area boys that set him ablaze for refusing to part with the usual levy they collect from bus drivers. A friend on Facebook posted the true story. He witnessed it live.
