Little Obinna who was a year and seven months old has reportedly died after falling into coma resulting from 31 strokes of cane he received from his school's owner, Mrs Ogbo, and her son.
The sad incident was made known by Ebenezer Omejalile, Chief Operating Officer of Advocates for Children and Vulnerable People's Network, a human rights group.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the baby, a pupil of Arise and Shine Nursery and Primary School, Asaba, Delta State, was given 31 strokes of cane for playing with water and getting wet.
The mother of the victim had said that the act was perpetrated by the school owner and her son, who tied the hands and legs of the baby before flogging him into a coma.
The woman and her son, who were initially in police custody but released due to agreement with the victim's family, were rearrested on Saturday after the baby died.
Omejalile condemned the act, calling on the Ministry of Education's Quality Assurance Department to rise up to its task of evaluating and monitoring the activities of school owners.
He said, “With a heavy heart, we wish to inform the house that the one year seven months old baby finally gave up the ghost this morning.
“Meanwhile the proprietress' family are still going about looking for who to bribe without considering what had happened to the minor.
“Now I agree that Nigeria is the worst place on earth to raise children. Imagine having unqualified persons to operate schools, employing unqualified teachers in the system.
“Our government should stop propagating and postulating laws that protects some sets of people and enabling monsters to operate mushroom schools.
“This is what you get when those that claim they know, suddenly turn deaf, blind and dumb to reality rather choosing to follow the path of jamborees and sycophancy.

DeleteWhen I was in secondary school, a public school o, the highest number of strokes I recieved was ten strokes during general punishment and neither my legs nor my hands were tied.

These days, you see schools on every corner and I wonder why it’s like that. You have little money, you establish a school without even getting the proper training.
The other day, I read how a 2 year old was flogged by her teacher, I felt so sad. Imagine your child having to go through that kind of pain at that age. Will they still want to go to school out of fear? One of the reasons some kids don’t do well in their academics.
You touch my child, be sure you are going to be dealt with mercilessly.
That school should be closed down and never reopened.

DeleteA child will be a child. What does a 2 or 3 year old know? Why won't he play with water? That is why as a parent you put spare clothes in your toddlers bag. They play with sand, water etc because their brain is not developed. We need to stop transferring our frustration, bitterness and failures on these children. They learn from playing but these mush room secondary schools do not know this. African parents will beat you to a point where you will lose your self confidence and esteem.
That is how my useless Nigerian nanny was trying to push me into beating my son when he was 3 cause I was potty training him while his teacher at school was patient and calm with him. 2 months after he got a hang of it and will wake up in the night to use the toilet.
Imagine killing this child because he did what a child his age should do?? Haaa God abeg.

I am very sad and angry at this news, been following it for a few days now and was praying he survives it. Rest in peace angel.
Parents pls, no matter how cheap a school is,no matter how considerate they are to your kids in allowing them to keep coming when you are owing school fees, pls don't keep quiet when they brutalize your kids. I am very sure that was not the first time they would beat that child. Some parents even encourage teachers to beat their kids very well because they are very 'stubborn'.
Pls let us start speaking out. Even if I'm owing school fees, I don't take rubbish. My children are precious to me. See how they killed the innocent child. I pray they don't sweep this case under the carpet. I pray that justice is served.

Very true @Ms Abroadian. Some of them take up teaching jobs out of joblessness, no passion for teaching, na condition push them enter the job. Poor salaries, non payment of salaries, work overload, etc frustrate them that they transfer all their pains to the poor kids they teach.

A church does daily prayers from 5.30am and some days u will see children waiting outside by 7am for pastor to finish. Sometimes the children will be taken to join the prayers. And we have a monitoring board!!
