Priest Who Angrily Banned Igbo Songs In Church Has Been Sent On Indefinite Leave Of Absence...

The Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ewu-Owa Gberigbe in Ikorodu, Lagos, Rev. Fr. James Anelu, has been “suspended” for banning Igbo songs and choruses in his parish. The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Alfred Martins, in a “disclaimer”, directed the priest to proceed on “an indefinite leave of absence”.

The gist...

Rev. Fr. James Anelu angrily stopped a soul lifting chorus and said the Igbos cannot keep dominating other tribes in his Church.

He made reference to Benin Diocese where they allegedly dominate and reportedly said that the spirit of God in any place recognises only languages indigenous to that geographical location.

The entire congregation disagreed with him and exited the church premises enmasse.

  3. ".......On saying this, the entire congregation went up in tumultuous uproar, leading to serious options that He should also ban the offering and contributions of igbo people.

There was massive boycotts as people walked out of the church service."

Unbelievable.... First, it was the Coza pastor firing shot at the Igbo congregant in his business arena. Now another Catholic Priest. What are they afraid about the Igbo race? What is the crime of the Igbo race? Why do people often feel intimidated about the Igbo ingenuity? Is it a crime we are often and always outstanding wherever we find ourselves? I don't just understand this level of animosity towards a race of people. I wonder how such a man is still being recognized as a priest with this level of bigotry displayed in the public space.

In all, the Igbo race keep excelling and soaring higher. If I was not an Igbo man, I would have opted to be one. Our ingenuity and industriousness can't be overemphasized and that is whom we are.

    1. Dont turn it into a race issue, even among igbos, there is racism. The priest is a single entity trying to display his ignorance and sentiment here, his view does not represent the whole.

He might think he has a point, but what does he expect when the majority of the choirs or members are from other tribe? they have to do what they know how to do best.

The priest should have done more to introduce more of other tribe into the choir or let things be.

God is everywhere,no matter the diversity of culture or language.

    4. Thanks Olomo for your comment but I'm only stating the obvious. When two different god of men have done this to a tribe what do you want us to think or believe? Is it when the third or fourth join them.

Anon 11:02, No, he's not Igbo. Cos the name sound Anelu you think so. An Igbo priest won't sound that bitter over his own people.

Alexander if you say so, but what's this "domineering" thingy often used against the Igbo people? What message does that represent to you?

    9. Wow! so much hatred! so people from delta state will say what????? I have noticed that when a person undergoes ill treatment from a tribe, they generalize the entire tribe! Some ill comments come from envy, anger, past bitter experience or the person in question must be a bitter person who is depressed or not doing well in life! No good person spills evil! Evil begets evil! Eating my breakfast and laughing at most of the comments here!

    1. Must you Catholics involve Pentecostal church in everything you say? A Catholic priest did something wrong ,instead of you to address it ,you are talking about Pentecostal churches.

I can only imagine if it was Adeboye or Oyedepo that did this , the whole country would have scattered by now.

  12. Domination in the Church? How does singing Igbo songs lead to domination, We sing in diverse languages in our local Churches. Well in the archdiocese of the Benin metropolitan sea, our Bini brothers and sisters have been fighting to have their bishopric. Gabriel Igbinedion a Baptist even built bishop's court in Okada in anticipation that the Vatican will grant their wish. They were not happy when Augustine Obiora Akubeze was made the Archbishop , they wanted a Bini man. The palace was involved at some point. They were simply told only the pope have the exclusive power to elevate any priest to that position, they didn't even have senior priest within the Archdiocese. I recall the fight in the Anglican church over the appointment of a bishop of Bini origin, how they rejected bishops that were sent to them. They started this whole thing from the fight to have a vice chancellor of Bini origin. Why can't we just take ethnicity out of the Church. Must our etbnic nationalities always be a hindrance to peace in our nation

  16. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. So they have taken tribal war into the church? Catholics una dooh o. Imagine if this happened in a Pentecostal church , the comments would have reached 200 by now. You would have been seeing "god of men , god of rod" all over the post.

Catholic be covering up evil wrongs in their church. Learn to speak out if any wrong is being perpetuated in the church.

  17. Serves him right,if he wants more songs from other tribes he should have encouraged more people to join the choristers but you cannot expect a choir filled with Igbos to be flowing in songs from other tribes.
I was once a chorister and even though we were always encouraged to balance the song list, but as a Yoruba lady I would have sang 7 praise songs from tribe before adding one from other tribe.
There are better ways the priest should have gone by it,not by outright banning which is so ridiculous

  20. I admire how decentralized the catholic church can be in handling most matters. If we can do it in a church, why not do same for the country? Hold all our leaders accountable. Impeach who needs to be impeached. Country no be your Papa own, na for all of us, masses and citizens. No more recycling same leaders when it is NOT a monarchy. Phew!

  21. I bet my last Naira that this so-called 'Reverend Father' would have been very happy were the songs in Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, German and other non-African languages that not even one member of his parish understands. He should realize that the Igbo people are the single largest Christianity-followers in Africa and Igbo people are the largest Christian group in Nigeria.
