DeleteAn “honorary Doctorate” IS NOT a degree that you address people with. It is the global convention that Nigerians lawlessly ignore. These are being given to charlatans and average folks who have no idea.
DeleteIt used to be given to folks who had contributed significantly to humanity, not anymore, an interior designer bought two in one day! It’s now cash and carry! These are folks without even a first degree. An honorary Doctorate USED to be reserved for accomplished individuals who have contributed to humanity or their society in a significant way. Only Tiwa Savage in my opinion based on her citations actually merits it based on her global profile and contribution to Afrobeats, among all these “wannabe” hustlers. Even then she isn’t supposed to use the title. Do you know how many honorary dr of letters Oprah, Michelle, barrack, Denzel etc have? Ever heard them refer to themselves as who they are NOT? These Naija oyingbo market sellers & buyers of the title have no scruples. Look out as everyone in Nollywood and every body buys theirs and address themselves as “dr”. It is wrong so as to differentiate them from those who earned degrees. Nigerians must rubbish everything. They are turning it to Range Rover and there are business center private colleges willing to sell it to them. It’s a case of inferiority complex in a society obsessed with titles, real or phantom.
