  2. I have been a volunteer sales assistant at a charity shop. I enjoyed it, the fellow volunteers were young and easygoing, and it was fun getting to know each other and sharing different experiences. I met a girl from Comoros, I had never heard of that country before, and it is in this our Africa.

We also got to price the donated items and it was really fun asking one another, "how much would you pay for this", "what's the highest you'd spend on this?" If we also saw something we liked, we could set it aside and buy it. We sold books as well and instead of buying the books, we could just take it and return to the shop after reading. It was such a lovely, no-stress experience with a nice manager who basically let us do whatever (although we were all well-behaved and no one ever quarrelled or stole or anything like that). I liked the people I volunteered with and I liked trying to guess (judge😅) customers' personality based on what they bought.

volunteering is a good way to meet people, to get out there and put yourself out there too, and helps you develop people skills and of course, is something you can add to your CV! Don't look at it as an unpaid job, but as something which will help develop your character and build resilience.

  4. Worked at a volunteer years back at UXL. A tech center for young migrants in Hackney. It was a beautiful experience meeting young migrants that were willing to learn and explore. The experience no doubt helped boost my resume. Thank God for the journey of my life.

  5. My group in church visited the prison today after our Christmas carol service where we donated some clothes, foodstuffs, toilet rolls and some cash.
We also prayed and minister the word of God to them.
SDK, you need to see the state of our prison here in Lagos, very dirty and smelling yet crowded with prisoners.i was almost in tears when I saw some female prisoners as well.

  6. I volunteered to fry garri for my cousins because all the while they kept saying that I can't fry garri, that am like ajebo. So, one fateful day, I met them frying garri, and I boasted before them that I could fry up to one basin of garri alone, I told the person frying to allow me fry just to prove to them that I could fry . As if they were waiting for someone to assist them lol, immediately I took over the frying, they all codely left me outside and went in to eat and rest a little. They stayed there for long . My eyes were hurting from the smoke. I knew that when they come out they would claim that the garri I fried didn't look as good as theirs and if i left the garri to go and call them to come and assist me in resetting the fire they will still make jest of me for not being able to reset the fire while frying garri. And my own was that I must prove to them that I know how to do these things. I endured the pains and did the job. My eyes were red and filled with tears, I had runny nose by force and I couldn't control it no matter how I tried. I tried my best to cover up so they won't laugh at me when the come out; but for where! They came out and met me standing while frying and when they saw my face they all bursted into laughter. This girls decided to punish me for my voluntary service.

People that can stand the smoke from the hot fire while frying garri please how do you do it.

    1. Garri frying requires you regulate the heat, if you set your fire well, you won't experience that smoke.. I thought you would complain about the pain in the palm in between the first two fingers, that's the only discomfort I experience when frying garri.

  10. I volunteered years ago for about 4 months working at a charity organisation that recycled household furniture for sale. I did front desk duties and did some admin duties..it was my first experience working in the UK and it gave me some insight into differences in working culture. They provided lunch and coffee/tea breaks and that was all..Volunteering in the UK is huge and a very good way to help build your CV and get some work experience. It was a policy for the company to employ ex-convicts to help give them a fresh start in life so they had a few of them who worked in the workshop. If you see some fine looking guys who have been to prison and back you go shock. I like that they are a society that helps you in every way no matter how small. People need a second chance in life and i wish we had such systems in place to help ex convicts in nigeria. Apart from church activities and related programmes I haven't done any kind of volunteer work in naija sha.
