IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu And EX Ally Simon Ekpa Reportedly Battle For The Leadership Of IPOB

There is a huge crack in the leadership of the secessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the founder and leader of the group and his followers have openly declared a battle against Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based former soldier, who is said to hail from Ebonyi State, with the aim of wresting the group from him.

Also, there have been allegations that the violence being experienced in the South-East States is orchestrated by Ekpa and members of his group.

Simon Ekpa, a former ally of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, came into limelight about three years ago. Before then, the ex-Finnish soldier has been identified as an athlete, who won a few laurels for Nigeria, before migrating overseas.

His identification with Kanu, however, gave him the recognition he sought. Using the name of IPOB and Kanu, Ekpa constantly described himself in broadcast messages as an unapologetic disciple of Nnamdi Kanu. Those who know Ekpa said he supported Kanu to the point of becoming a trusted ally of his, and even held separate broadcast messages, away from Kanu’s own.

However, the arrest of Kanu in Kenya last year proved a turning point for Ekpa, who started assuming leadership, even to the point of calling for fundraising, and seeking to control the military wing of IPOB, known as Eastern Security Network (ESN). Attempts by the Directorate of State (DOS) of IPOB, which was running the group in the absence of Kanu to stop him, yielded no fruits.

Ekpa rebuffed DOS, claiming that IPOB was on Autopilot, and not controlled by anyone, and as such, he would not submit to DOS. A source who claimed to be a member of IPOB, and who begged not to be named disclosed to Daily Post that before Kanu’s arrest, Ekpa had worked closely with Kanu, even in the formation of the ESN.

“He knows a lot of things about the workings of IPOB. He was close to Kanu, and no one will even agree that at some point he will become rebellious to the same Kanu, who he described then as the supreme leader, and to whom he arrogated to himself his discipleship.

“I think he is just a greedy character, because even before the arrest of Kanu, he has once attempted to raise funds through our brothers living overseas. But it was after the arrest of Kanu that he came out full, to show himself.

“Several attempts by Kanu, even from prison, to try to clip his wings have failed. From making broadcasts, he built a crop of radical individuals for himself, and they referred to themselves as the autopilot group. Most of his boys working as armed men, are breakaway boys of Kanu’s ESN, who Ekpa recruited and have been using for nefarious purposes,” he said.

The source stated that at the heat of insecurity in Anambra State, before the State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo dislodged them, Ekpa maintained a camp in a part of Ihiala, and his boys were among those who were collecting money from people before any ceremony could be held.

Our source continued: “You know the notorious bandit called Double Lion, who was killed early this year in Ihiala? He and many other boys were working for Ekpa. IPOB also has its own boys, they work as security to any area they find themselves in. Their only problem was that, in any town they establish themselves, they will not want to see police in that town. They were friendly to locals, but Ekpa’s boys rather terrorise locals.

“You will remember that Anambra became a little cooler after Double Lion was killed. It may also interest you to know that Double Lion and his men were not killed by police or federal forces, they were killed by a special squad from ESN, who felt that Ekpa and his boys were giving them a bad name. Ekpa and Kanu’s faction of IPOB have been at a loggerhead for some time now, but they are trying to keep it under wraps.”

Last week, Ekpa, speaking from Finland, declared a five-day sit-at-home in the five South-eastern States. No reason was given for the declaration, but speaking in an internet based show, Have Your Say, anchored by US based journalist, Rudolf Okonkwo, Ekpa said that December 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 have been declared sit-at-home days. He threatened that anyone who dared to come out would be dealt with. He also stated that the group may likely disrupt the 2023 election in the South-east, saying it was only concerned about the restoration of Biafra.

Though the first day of the sit at home was not adhered to, as many towns in the South-east went about their normal duty, but in subsequent days, especially in Enugu and Imo States, there had been incidences of violence, suggesting that Ekpa and his men may have decided to make real their threat.

Kanu’s lawyer, Barr Nnaemeka Ejiofor has begun a process to initiate a suit against Ekpa, for his criminal activities in the South-East, using IPOB.

There are allegations that Ekpa is being sponsored by a presidential candidate, who was working to whittle down the influence of a South-eastern candidate running for the presidency of Nigeria. It is believed that with violence, many people in the South-East where the presidential candidate has massive support may jettison the idea of voting.

As of the time of writing this report, many members of the Kanu’s faction of IPOB have declared ‘war’ against Ekpa, and have been reporting his social media handles, while some of the handles have been suspended.

    1. A request should be submitted to Finland. He and his family should be deported to the south east, let's see how he and his family will survive in the chaos they want to create.

  2. Igbos are not cowards. Statistics shows that Imo state has the highest number of professors in Nigeria. People hate us because you can not put a real Igbo man in your pocket and sleep sound. It is either you are choked or you vomit him. This Simon Ekpa should better enjoy his last minute fame. The way Masob left Aba is the way his boys will leave east. People have woken up. Operation fight unknown gunmen na alaigbo. No more sit at home . Election must hold in the east. They said Obi does not have structure, he is a social media candidate yet they are sleepless because of him.
    God bless NIGERIA

  5. I want division but I do not even support this type of division. I have been saying it. The best way to divide Nigeria is division into 6 geopolitical zones. That is the best way to go. Southeast, South South,, North Central, Middle Belt, North East, everybody should go and manage themselves better. This is very possible. There are countries that has way smaller land max that divided even without violence. Our leaders are just making things difficult.

  7. Buhari wanted to deal with these insurgents in "a language they would understand "but people like Senator Abaribe took him up over the "dot nation" remark and alleged Buhari wanted to eliminate all the ndi Igbo.

Much of those calling for Simon Ekpa's head today pushed for Twitter to ban President Buhari Twitter handle which led to the Buhari administration restricting Twitter in Nigeria.

Today the chickens have come home to roost but it is now a little too late.

  8. Igbos are their own worst enemies. All the assumed or perceived enemies is as a result of deep rooted distrust among Igbos within and for themselves. You can call or name Fulanis or another tribe as enemies but the truth played out during the forced sit-at-home ordered by IPOB is a very clear evidence of this. Now, it's a politician (am very certain, they will claim is not an Igbo man) that is sponsoring the break-away faction.
The Igbo elders refused to caution and speak out about the attrocities of IPOB and ESN on Fellow Igbos(Yimu).
Election will not hold in the East thereby ruining the chances of Obi, off course when that happens, Igbos will be quick to blame others but themselves. This is the trend and it will continue to trend till the Igbos can look each other in the face and face the stark reality

    1. Thank you!
They fight themselves and then blame people for not liking their modus operandi. Who wants to associate with people who always think of fighting and over throwing themselves? Simple referendum now has turned to rubbish

They don't like cooperating with anyone in authority. They always seek to overthrow and shame you once you have something they desire. Very bad caste system spirit amongst them.

  10. They better put an end to this nonsense. Simon Ekpa may not be the bad egg. Someone may have paid the media to paint him bad. However, I think the East would have been worst than it is had it not been the rise of IPOB. I, in the other hand do not support them fighting each other. Why not have a common goal. Disrupting election in the eastern part of Nigeria is the worst thing to do. Peter Obi must become President and this should be the primary goal of every wise Nigerian who thinks of the future not only the Igbo's. You can't give what you don't have.

ekpa is doing exactly what mk did!
Yes, we can try to paint mk as a saviour, but, the truth is that he instigated so many killings and encouraged same!
