 President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive review of the recently announced governing boards of tertiary institutions. He expressed concerns that the constitutional Federal Character principle did not reflect in the nominations of members of the governing councils.



The Transition Committee of the Labour Party, LP, on Thursday promised to reposition the party towards becoming a force to reckon with in Nigeria’s political space.
The committee’s chairman, Mr Abdulwaheed Umar, said this at the official inauguration of the committee put together by the Political Commission of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and other stakeholders in Abuja.

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a trigger-happy officer who allegedly killed one Oyebuchi Anene, a resident of Byazhin community in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja.
The incident happened on Wednesday near Haj Estate, where the deceased lived with his young wife and one daughter.
Trouble started when the deceased, who was on his way home, hit an okada man and his passenger in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased stopped and made sure that the Okada rider and his passenger were okay before leaving the scene to his home in the Haj Estate.
However, some policemen stormed the area and demanded that the deceased follow them to a station.
The development ensued an altercation between the deceased and the policemen.
One of the officers reportedly shot a teargas canister into the eye of the deceased at a very close range.
He was rushed to the Kubwa General Hospital after which he was referred to National Hospital, where he eventually died on Thursday.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh confirmed the incident to Dailypost on Friday that the police officer, who was responsible for the “accidental discharge” is currently in custody.

Katsina State Police Command has arrested a four-man gang specialized in swapping Point-of-Sale (POS) machines to steal from unsuspecting victims.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Abubakar Aliyu Sadiq, paraded the suspects during a press briefing held at the Command’s headquarter on Thursday.
He noted that the arrest was made on May 12, 2024, following a tip-off from the public.
He identified the suspects as Abdulhakeem Haruna (20), Habibu Kabir (28), Aminu Abubakar (27), and Abubakar Bishir (25).
The suspects, who are all residents of Katsina, were alleged to have swindled five business owners of a total sum of N4.763 million.

The Kogi Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja has scheduled judgment for Monday in the petition by Social Democratic Party, SDP, and its candidate in the last governorship election in Kogi, Murtala Ajaka. Ajaka and his party are challenging the declaration of Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the election held on November 11, 2023.

The House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army to reopen the Banex Plaza in Abuja for business activities. It also urged the authorities to use modern technology, such as surveillance and closed circuit television, to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack on Army personnel in the plaza recently.

The Federal Government said on Thursday that the country was poised to begin local production of military equipment with the recent signing of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Bill by President Bola Tinubu. The Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru, said following the signing of the bill, the FG had been in talks with 50 local firms for local production of firearms in the country.

The grandmother of a 17-year-old girl identified simply as Favour has buried her daughter’s newborn baby alive in the Ogombo area of Ajah, Lagos State. It was gathered that when the grandmother observed that the teenager had gotten pregnant, she became angry and did everything possible to hide the pregnancy from members of the public.

An Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division on Thursday sentenced two persons, Benjamin Joseph (32), and Stephen Orban (25), to death by hanging for robbing two persons of cash and valuable items. The convicts were arraigned on December 30, 2022, on four counts bordering on conspiracy and armed robbery.

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has told the Federal Government that Nigerians were increasingly being frustrated by poverty and hunger, thus challenging the political office holders to rise to their responsibilities of protecting Nigerians and uplifting their living standards.

  3. Some of our police officers will intentionally pull the trigger and come back to claim it's “accidental discharge”. Rest in peace, Onyebuchi & may God comfort the family you left behind.
