Nigeria's Organised Labour Insists On Indefinite Strike After Failed Meeting With NASS And SGF

The Nigerian Labour Congress(NLC´) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have resolved to proceed with their indefinite strike despite the call from the National Assembly leadership to resume negotiations.
The Labour leaders met with NASS and SGF but the meeting failed and according to Labour the strike will begin today Monday June 3, 2024.
Organised labour is demanding N494,000 as the new minimum wage for workers but the Nigerian govt is offering N60,000.

    1. No amount can really be enough and i am not trying to defend government but it's important to realise that the N60k or whatever is finally agreed is just the basic salary, other allowances will still come on top of the basic.
Whatever amount is agreed automatically becomes law for all employers in Nigeria, both government workers and private sector employees, how many supermarkets, bakery, restaurants, fuel stations, shop owners and other such employers can pay their staff N494k per month?.

08:52, This one you wrote is not true. It doesn't become law for all employers.
The 30k of before, how many private establishments pay it as minimum wage? Some still pay 15k.
Even some state governments claimed they could not afford that 30k, they are still owing their workers as I type, e.g Kogi

Meanwhile, increment of salary is not the solution to our problem in Nigeria. If they peg it at that 60k, market women will increase the already high prices of foodstuff and the rest, thereby causing suffering for all citizens including some of us that are small business owners and do not earn salary or pay salary, just managing our small business by ourselves.

They should fight for overall better life for Nigerian workers like decrease in fuel pump price, decrease in light tarrif, hold our leaders to pay all owed salaries and pensions, clamour for corrupt officials to be prosecuted and jailed, etc.

  5. 100,000 is reasonable, anything less than that is not cool.

  6. They should do everything to avoid a strike. How will a strike help their workers who are mostly living pay cheque to pay cheque, these are the very ppl who a strike will devastate. 60k may be a far cry from what they wanted but it is a full 100% increase on the current amount, they have not failed, they still got the workers better than they could have gotent for themselves.

The government employees should get more than the 60k but it is unrealistic to expect that small business owners will be able to pay anything close to 494k. Some small businesses not even making that amount in sales for the month.

  7. I am just concerned that this is happening during the ongoing WAEC exams, the WAEC timetable is for West Africa and not just Nigeria.
If we succeed in rescheduling this exam, the extra cost will still be paid by government from this money that we say is not enough.
I just checked WAEC website, and the exam will end of June 24, don't they have a strategy or tactical committee that can plan these things? The strike can start immediately after the WAEC exams, you can't be fighting for my welfare at the expense of my child's education.

  9. To remove subsidy, the president never stress his self.He just announced it during speech on his swearing in as president.
National assembly and vp got billions of naira to renovate and buy cars without stress. Now to increase minimum wages, na whala.
They broke down how they come up with the 494k, then u also should break down how u reach the 60k u are offering and let everyone reasoning together.

  10. they've not shown enough will during this negotiations. Imagine spending so much for your child to get an education only to receive a paltry sum of 30k--won,t you feel pained more than the postponed exams?

  11. I think the Labour Union should jave added reduction of petrol price to ₦300 per litre. Even if workers get paid ₦1,000,000 per month, it wont still be enough. Petrol price is the main cause of all these hardship 🤷‍♂️
