Pregnancy and motherhood really changed a lot of things for me. Before I had kids, my diet was pretty okay. There were certain foods I was so sure I would never ever eat. I couldn’t stand them, like black amala, cucumber, and watermelon. I hated the texture and taste of these three things.
Once I became pregnant with my first, I started craving black amala, and to date, I still eat it and love it, cucumber and watermelon too, though I can only have them as frozen treat ...
I used to love goat meat and catfish. I could “devour” very large catfish, but in pregnancy, I just hated the taste and also the smell of goat meat.
Now, I can only eat them in small quantities before I feel like puking.
In pregnancy, I hated the smell of my usual brand of dishwashing liquid soap, and till now, I still can’t stand it.
Also, before pregnancy, I hated spicy food, like I could cook my stews with just tomatoes and no pepper at all. But in my second pregnancy I started craving spicy stews and soups and since then I can handle them a little bit better, not as much as other people though but I still consciously add pepper to my meals now because without a little pepper it now taste bland and nauseating.
I didn’t like Afang soup and Efo riro before pregnancy, but after craving it during pregnancy till now a good bowl of both soups would have me trading my birth right. I don’t judge Esau anymore...HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
What has remained constant is my love for plantain and beans. I don’t think I have the right words to explain how much I love this food combo.
Since my first pregnancy that I started experiencing reflux, despite the fact that beans worsen it. I risk it all again and again just to enjoy a good plate of beans and plantain. As I am writing this, I am craving beans and plantain so bad I will be having it for lunch tomorrow.
