Chronicle Of A Person Living With A Positive Status

Sometime ago , I noticed a small bump like boil but not painful at the back head close to my head, so I went to a private hospital close to my house to have it checked.

After physical examination, the Dr wrote a test on a sheet of paper for me to run at the lab, you know how some naija Drs carry face that you'll be scared to get on their nerves by asking questions so they won't give you mouth injection.

Note: this is not the hospital I use for hiv treatment, I only go there for minor treatments like malaria and co, most times you meet different Drs and most hardly check medical history, though their MD knows my status and it's not actually written on my card to prevent aproko from their staff.

Back to my gist, without knowing the test I was told to do, cos I tried checking it on Google but nothing came up cos he used their own hospital term for hiv testing, I later got to know that the bump is a swollen lymph node that's common with hiv patients.

I got to the lab and they collected my sample and was asked to go back to the waiting room, after a while I saw the lab attendant going into the Dr's office to have a chat with him, immediately I suspected what's up.

She later came out and signal to me to follow her, she said the test she did is not clear that she needed another sample to reconfirm, that was when I asked her which test are they doing sef, she said hiv test...
I told her they should have told me na, that she should not worry about reconfirmation that I will go in and speak with the Dr, my leg heavy cos that hospital is close to my house,I don't know if the girl is a loose mouth, I almost regretted going there.

I went back to the Dr's office and confess to him ,he said it's no big deal that he requested for the test because the swelling is one symptom of the symptoms that my body is fighting an infection, he gave me something to be applying on it and it has since disappeared.

I always feel somehow anytime I see that lab attendant especially whenever I see her with someone I know . I hope she's professional by not gisting people about the issue.

The shame attached to carrying this virus no be here, may God help us

May God heal you permanently 🙏

  5. If you ever hear it from anyone close to that nurse, sue the hospital without looking back. She has no right to disclose your health issue with anyone,it is strictly confidential.

  6. I hope she is professional too. Doctors should not be requesting any test without telling the patient what they are testing for. Whatever investigative testing should be told to the patient. Plus hiv is considered a public health matter. Not sure how it is not in Nigeria, but in my country hiv testing is done through the public health labs. They do a stronger more secure testing to ensure accuracy. Everyone in the state with hiv is in their system. The hospital can do their test but if a positive result is discovered it will go back to public health to do their own findings.

Don’t feel afraid to speak up and ask what a test is for, you have a right to know what you are being sent for.

    1. Yes, sometimes paying extra in travel cost is worth the peace of mind. Continue to do what works for you. Unfortunately, not everyone can do as you, though I am sure they would love to.
