Prison Officer Dismissed For Exposing Colleague Who Allegedly Sneaked Out Inmate To Gbensh

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that it dismissed one of its officers at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Afikpo, for allegedly sharing "unauthorised" photographs of an inmate.

SaharaReporters had exclusively reported that the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Corrections, Efe Onakpoya, assigned to the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, for alleged whistleblowing.

According to the report, Onakpoya was sacked for exposing how a colleague, Ogbule Samuel Obinna, allegedly took an inmate out of the facility illegally for a conjugal visit with his girlfriend.

However, a statement by the Correctional Service spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, obtained by SaharaReporters on Sunday, claimed that an investigation was conducted by the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The authorities claimed that it found the allegations against Ogbule Samuel Obinna to be untrue.
"The internal review, which included a rigorous assessment of all relevant facts and testimonies, concluded that there was no credible evidence linking the officer to any misconduct.

"The officer in question, ASC I Efe Onakpoya (Service No. 57790), was relieved of his duties following proven misconduct — not only for taking unauthorised photographs of an inmate, Ibuchi Okoro Eze, but also for uploading sensitive materials online and spreading false, damaging allegations against the Service

"If anything, the action taken by the Service — a swift dismissal following due process — underscores NCoS’s zero-tolerance policy for ethical breaches and its unwavering commitment to discipline and integrity.
