Benin Palace Issues Statement Rejecting ‘Iyeki General’ Title
The Benin Traditional Council, under the authority of Oba Ewuare II, has issued a statement clarifying that the concept of “Iyeki General” or “Iyaloja” is alien to Benin culture and has no traditional foundation. The Palace stressed that market leadership (Iyeki) is a local and spiritual role, not a political one, and condemned the growing politicization of market associations.
