Labour Room Drama

It's going to be a long read, please bear with me.

A month after our wedding, I realized I was pregnant. We were so excited because we prayed to fall pregnant immediately after the wedding. Sadly, we lost the pregnancy around 10 weeks.

I was sad but hubby comforted me.God came true for us again some months later, I realized I was pregnant and my joy knew no bounds. I begged God to allow this one stay and He heard.

Throughout the pregnancy, I was having fun,I had pregnancy cravings but I was strong throughout and worked in another state different from where my husband resided. I took my maternity leave when I was almost 8 months gone and travelled down to my husband's state and registered in a hospital there.

The compound he lived in had water issues, so we started trying to relocate from the compound earlier but it wasn't possible. When I moved down, we intensified our efforts till it was almost time for my baby to be born; luckily for us, we found a house and we fixed a date to move.

Out of excitement, I suggested dropping my hospital bag at the new house the day we took cleaners to the house but hubby rejected the idea, said that the bag will move with the rest of our things on the date of our final relocation. My due date was the following month so I felt he was just being dramatic.

The D day to move came and we started packing our things together, we removed curtains,TV and all removals; even our bed was removed from the frame and everything dismantled. We waited for the moving truck driver to come but he was nowhere to be found.

We finally got him on the phone around 11pm and he promised to come the following morning, said that he helped a family to move in the morning and was stuck in Lagos traffic. Already tired from all the packings, we had no option but to bring down our bed,put a curtain back on the window and sleep.

Around 2:00 a.m, I felt the urge to urinate and woke up, immediately I felt water rush out from my vagina,Hubby also woke up with me and asked if I urinated on the bed,I touched the liquid and noticed that it wasn't smelling like urine and I still had the urge to pee,so I quickly dashed to the toilet and came out minutes after to explain that I didn't urinate on the bed and maybe in labour.

We were confused because my due date was still about 2 weeks away.

We cleaned up and I tried to sleep again but started feeling something like a little menstrual cramp. The water kept rushing out little by little and we called my Doctor. He confirmed that I was in Labour and should come to the hospital first thing in the morning.

I tried to lie down again but I couldn't again,so I started pacing around. As the hours went by, I noticed that the pain was increasing, so I came to the blog and started reading other people's labor room dramas. Around 5:00 a.m, I was able to get a pad from one shop in our street and we started going to the hospital. At this time,my contraction was about 5 minutes apart from my calculation. On the road,we met police men who insisted on searching our car but when they saw me hitting the dashboard each time the contraction came, they told my hubby to hurry to the hospital.

At the hospital, the doctor was not around, he told the nurses to admit us and that he will be there any moment. I was admitted and checked by the nurses who said that I was already 7cm dilated, that check was so painful that I almost screamed down the hospital.

The Doctor was yet to come and the nurses asked me to walk around.I was walking around and chanting the Mother of perpetual help prayer that I changed to "Oh Mary help me".Anytime the contraction came very strongly, I stretched the prayer to "Oh Mary, help me ooooooo".The pain was so much and I started begging hubby to take care of the baby in case I don't make it but he shouted "God forbid" and asked me to clean my mouth. He started firing prayers.

After sometime, I started feeling the urge to poo and I told the nurses that I want to use the toilet, but they said that I shouldn't go but wait to be checked, they checked again and noticed that I was 10 cm dilated but they said that my baby's head was not engaged.I cried, crode, called my baby's name and begged him to please come down and come out.

They asked me to try to do a little squat, I tried it the first time but couldn't go again because of the pains. They called the doctor that I was ready. One of the nurses told me to push with all my strengths whenever I am told to push, that the doctor likes to give women tear. I agreed and few minutes later, the Doctor entered into the labour ward carrying a scissors. He told me to push, I pushed but instead of my baby coming out, I pooed hot poo on the table.

I started crying and begging the nurses and Doctor not to be angry, that shebi I told them that I felt like pooing. They told me not to bother that it was their job, so I took my time and did another one. After changing the birthing mat, the Doctor picked up the scissors and gave me a cut,it was painful. He asked me to push again and I pushed with all my strength and my beautiful hairy baby came out at 7:21 a.m, weighing 3.7kg.

As my baby came out,I felt a warm liquid flowing out and all I felt next was relief.I birthed the placenta thinking it was over but the Doctor had other plans.I saw him take up the needle and I started begging him to give me an injection before sewing the tear, he refused, said it was still fresh and won't pain me while he worked on it.The pain from that traumatized me for days after delivery.

As I was taken out of the labour room, everyone was congratulating me and my baby, calling me 'Oh Mary help us'.My baby is 3 now and he’s such a handsome boy.

Thanks to everyone who sent in their labour room drama, they helped me to prepare, even though I forgot all I learned immediately the pains came.

Thank you.

Interesting!!!...Thank you for entertaining us!

    1. I was very faithful with my antenatal classes at the state I was working but the hospital I registered when I left to hubby's state didn't have open antenatal classes, you only come for hospital appointments, they give instructions and take your questions.I will do better with no 2
