The 16 years was to run concurrently (effectively 5 years).
So while he was originally expected to serve 5 years, he was released early after serving just a little over 3 years.
Release date was Friday November 14, 2025.
Jail term was served in full, and the court of appeal did not overturn his conviction.

ReplyDeleteCan lawyers in the house please explain?
ReplyDeleteSummary:
DeletePrison year is shorter than the calendar year.
Concurrent sentences run at the same time.
A concurrent sentence means each sentence period for each offence runs at the same time. For example, 4 years for offence 1 and 4 years for offence 2 equals 8 years but will run only for 4 years.
One year in prison is 8 calendar months. So a 4 years sentence means the convicted person will only be inside prison for 4 x 8 months = 32 months. That is, 2 calendar years, 6 months, and some days.
If the sentence was ordered to run from the date of detention in prison, the convicted person might even stay a lesser period in prison or walk home from court after conviction and sentencing, but would still be recorded in law as an ex-convict.
This explains why P.Diddy was sentenced to 50 months; meaning he would stay exactly 50 months in prison.
