During a plenary session, lawmakers said the unbearable costs, with one-way tickets from Abuja to Lagos now ranging between N400,000 and N600,000, up from N50,000 to N100,000 earlier in the year. This escalation has left ordinary travelers, especially those planning holiday trips, struggling to afford air travel.
Senator Yunus Abdulfatai led the charge, moving a motion that prompted the Senate to summon Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, along with key stakeholders in the aviation industry. The Senate aims to urgently address what it describes as exploitative pricing, particularly as the Christmas and New Year rush intensifies the financial strain on families.
The root causes of the fare hike include the rising cost of Jet A1 fuel, driven by naira's devaluation, coupled with high demand and limited aircraft availability due to maintenance issues.
The insecurity on Nigeria's roads has further pushed travelers towards air travel, exacerbating the price surge. Critics note that short domestic flights are now more expensive than some international routes, such as London to France, highlighting the disproportionate burden on Nigerian citizens.

The fear of being kidnapped is the cause. It's better to spend more and travel by air than going by road and end up paying more as ransom or being killed.
ReplyDeleteThe only solution is to.make the roads safe. We need our roads back. Jesus Christ we hand over all Nigerian roads over to you. Every traveller will go and come back in peace 🙏
They need to also summon Airpeace because that man is not giving peace to the SE,how can you from the SE hike the price of airfare to the East in December while other airlines are still relatively affordable?
ReplyDeleteI don't support Air peace but my dear the pressure is too much. Almost everyone wants to travel by air. You need to go to the airport and see what is happening. It's like market.

It's not just Airpeace alone. All the airlines raised their fares. One way ticket to Owerri is now #400k if you see seat o. There is a shortage of aircraft due to maintenance issues and also issues with some aircraft leasing companies. Aviation business is not for the weak.
