Court Gives Ex-Gov Yahaya Bello Permission To Travel For Lesser Hajj

A Federal High Court in Abuja has given former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello permission to travel to Saudi Arabia for the lesser Hajj, also known as Umrah during Ramadan.

On January 29, 2026 Justice Emeka Nwite made the ruling after Bello's lawyer asked the court to release his international passport temporarily.
The passport was with the court as part of his bail conditions.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting Bello, did not object to the request. They asked for strict rules to make sure he comes back.

The court approved Bello to travel for 10 days, starting March 13, 2026, to observe the last 10 days of Ramadan in Mecca.
He must return his passport to the court right after. Yahaya Bello faces a 19 count charge from the EFCC for alleged money laundering involving about ₦80.2 billion from Kogi State funds during his time as governor from 2016 to 2024.
