A California jury has ruled that Instagram and YouTube contributed to a young woman’s childhood social‑media addiction and awarded her $6 million in damages.
The plaintiff, who began using YouTube at six and Instagram at nine, said the platforms’ addictive designs led to years of anxiety and depression.
After testimony from tech leaders including Mark Zuckerberg, jurors found both companies negligent for failing to warn about the risks.
Meta will pay 70 percent and Google 30 percent...
Both companies plan to appeal.

Oh Chim ❗️
ReplyDeleteSo it’s Meta & Google fault that her parents didn’t monitor her enough for the excessive screen time at that age? Just wow 😮
Yes it is. The effort these companies put in to make these apps addictive is not a joke. They have neurologists, psychologists, all sorts of professionals whose only job is to tell them how to make their platforms more addictive, how to make your life revolve around their platforms and your phone.
DeleteIt is more than what a single person can handle by ‘controlling your children’ as you say. I ‘control my children’ but it is very hard and takes a lot of intentionality, I recognize that not everyone has the opportunity or knowledge I have.
So Meta especially should pay up Abeg, that money is chicken feed to them. I wish more people would sue.
12:57, trust that they have updated their terms of service agreement already, so the chances of another user being successful in a suit will be slim to none. Ppl do not understand that it is all designed to be addictive and distracting, they think these ppl created these platforms for the users’ benefit. Video games, social media, streaming is all intended to rewire the brain and build addiction.
DeleteAll the tv/movie streaming platforms that show ads now have a plethora of ads for online gambling and they are full or bright colours with happy people always winning, never losing. So, we will soon see a rise in online problem gambling.
@15.07 my dear this gambling thing is becoming something else. Recently, I have constantly been seeing for one kashi gambling platform where you can place bets on the most obscure things such as 'the president will wear a red tie tomorrow',.. you can imagine. So gambling is no more just about sports, it is now about the happenings of everyday life.
DeleteIt is like the plan of these tech people is to make the general populace useless and brainless. May God help us with our kids the way things are going
You nailed it. The intention is to make us useless and brainless!
DeleteLOL. Abeg learned bv here, shey this kind case dey admissible in naija court of law, I wan check something on behalf of my kids.
ReplyDelete@ Paris I tire oo they should go ahead and pay for the damages then, inukwa Akuko🙄 but if they decide to scrutinize it may not be only her so they will keep paying for damages abi wetin
ReplyDeleteNa wah o
ReplyDeleteNa only Oyibo court fit grant tis kind yeye verdict 🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteThey are designed to be addictive. IG constantly sends you emails if you do not log in regularly. They know their platforms are full of bots so when they know you are a live human they hound you to log in because they need ppl to view their ads. They both overload your brain which isn’t even what nature intended for anyone with all the unnecessary stimuli.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed a slow correction happening. Folks better start paying attention to how they earn their income and what they create in the world. The planet is slowly getting rid of folks who are creating filth and mayhem and profiting from it. In less than six months two prominent ceos of tech companies have died, both headed companies that created filth and violence. Earth has woken up and it is not playing with anyone, we will see much more in the coming years.
Pls educate me ohh, which prominent tech ceos died?
DeleteThe video game one who created all those violent video games.
DeleteHahaha 😂😂 don't know why I found this funny.
ReplyDeleteHmmm!!
ReplyDeleteVery serious and funny.
