Nigerian‑Born Catholic Priest Convicted For Assaulting Women Under His Spiritual Care

A Nigerian‑born Roman Catholic priest, Anthony Odiong, has been convicted by a jury in Texas, United States, for sXxually assaulting women who were under his spiritual care.

Odiong, 57, was found guilty on one count of first‑degree sXxual assault and two counts of second‑degree sXxual assault after a trial held in Waco, Texas. According to court proceedings, the assaults occurred while he was serving as a priest and providing spiritual guidance to the victims.

Prosecutors told the jury that he used these sessions to isolate the women and then touched them inappropriately without their consent. The victims said he exploited his position as a priest, making them believe the acts were part of spiritual care or healing.

The jury returned the guilty verdicts after hearing testimonies detailing how Odiong abused his position as a clergyman to take advantage of the women who trusted him for counseling and pastoral support.
Sentencing is expected to follow, where Odiong could face substantial prison time under Texas law.

  1. Hmmm, this reminds me of the abuse I suffered in my teenage years in the early 90s by a priest of an Anglican church who was supposed to be my piano teacher, I couldn't tell my brother that registered me (he was in Uni and no phone then), I eventually stopped going. I couldn't even tell anyone.

I hope he is sent to jail.
