A 45‑year‑old woman, Mrs. Mary Yaduyan, has died just hours after delivering a set of quintuplets ( five baby boys ) at a specialist hospital in Akure, Ondo State.
Mary, who had been childless for over 14 years, conceived in 2025 through in vitro fertilisation (IVF). She was delivered of the babies via caesarean section, but suffered a pulmonary embolism, a sudden and severe complication, a few hours later.
Doctors said she later complained of chest pain, prompting the involvement of a consultant cardiologist.
“Initial assessments did not indicate immediate danger,” the consultant said.
After the delivery, Mary was said to have remained stable, with normal blood pressure and oxygen levels. A consultant anaesthesiologist and other medical personnel monitored her closely due to the high‑risk nature of the pregnancy.
According to the medical team, the pregnancy had progressed smoothly until 31 weeks, when she experienced premature rupture of membranes and was placed under strict observation. She also had a history of uterine fibroids, which had been surgically removed two years earlier. Doctors adopted conservative management to prolong the pregnancy while monitoring for infection and other risks.
Speaking to Hope Newspaper, Mary’s elder sister, Mrs. Olusola Ajayi, recounted her final moments.
“She called me when I arrived and said she wanted to eat rice with red oil. Later, she changed her mind and rejected the food,” she said.
Ajayi added that the family was informed the surgery would take place around 10 a.m., and they stayed on a video call with Mary’s husband, who is abroad, throughout the procedure. She confirmed that doctors attended to her sister continuously and that the family did everything possible to support her care.
“We did everything we could, but God Almighty knows why it happened this way,” she said.

The hospital, known for managing multiple births, was thrown into mourning as the death occurred about four hours after what had been described as a successful delivery. She had reportedly attended regular antenatal sessions and experienced no major complications throughout the pregnancy.
Doctors said she later complained of chest pain, prompting the involvement of a consultant cardiologist.
“Initial assessments did not indicate immediate danger,” the consultant said.

This is so heartbreaking
ReplyDeleteMay her soul rest in peace.
IVF? Why did she allow five babies to be placed in her womb at once. Three is ok, even if one does, two will be alive. Carry one baby at 45 is even risky let alone five.
ReplyDeleteNow give boys are without a mother from birth. Sad!
May her soul rest in peace.
Women sure go through a lot! Damn! I was just imagining all that trauma going on in that body, this human body sef *sigh*! Shout out to all women out there, y'all are the real MVP's, God bless y'all!..

ReplyDeleteOh dearππ
ReplyDeletePermit me to say this, IVF in Nigeria is not regulated? Why alllow multiple egg implantations, 1 at most 2 is enough! Once Nigerians have the minium capacity to do things they mess it up! While pregnant women and women who have CS are at a higher risk of developing PE, the risk can be reduced drastically by taking several measures e.g. limiting multiple egg implantation, proper care after CS ...etc!
ReplyDeleteNigeria is one of the top countries in the world for maternal deaths
It is often ranked 1st or 2nd globally, alongside India in absolute numbers
Roughly 1 in 5 maternal deaths worldwide happens in Nigeria alone!
May God protect those cuties without a mother, may He provide nurture.
I share the same sentiments with you 11:07.
DeleteNigerians abuse everything and they don't even have the facilities and capacity to manage most problems that arise after they overdo.
Why implant 5 babies at once in a 45 yr old?
The doctor that did it should be arrested. What sort of unprofessionalism is this?
The greedy couple too are to blame, so because you were TTC for years, you want to birth all the babies you didn't birth in 14 years at once?
I just feel for the innocent babies.
May God guide and protect them.
Oh dear

Apologies if i sound cynical... could it be that they wanted to maximise the value of the IVF, or by their calculation, if she had been birthing as at when due , the plan was to have 5 children or in case some eggs did not make it to maturity, the process would not have been a loss. I don't just get it. After a certain age, child bearing becomes touch and go , for both mother and child especially if the woman has not conceived before. At least from the story, we can see that all the support that could be done humanly and medically were done. What's left now is to take care of the little ones, giving them adequate care and close monitoring. I look forward to hearing wonderful testimonies as they grow up.
ReplyDeleteOh no! This is heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteMay her soul rest in perfect peace
This is a really sad one. But 5 babies at once .at her age is too much though. May God be with the babies.
ReplyDeleteThe problem started from the IVF process - overkill. Also, whatever that hospital is called, it's not a teaching hospital. This was mistake number 2. May her soul rest in peace and may God give the entire family the needed fortitude to go on.
ReplyDeleteMay God keep watch over and preserve those children.
Sad !!
ReplyDeleteSome very risky journey Women embark. Dear God !
Some I know too. In her fifties went for same procedure. Twin babies in her case. She almost lost her life in the process. She saw hell and came back. At the end lost one of the twin after all effort.
May she rest in peace.
Oh dear π
ReplyDeleteRest in peace to her...
